Russell Cracks Kings

Michael Russell
Michael Russell
Michael Russell has just eliminated a player, after calling a preflop raise and flopping the stone cold nuts holding {7-Spades}{8-Diamonds} on a flop of {6-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{5-Spades}. All the chips went into the middle when the {K-Diamonds} hit the turn as his opponent revealed {K-Clubs}{K-Hearts} for a turned set. Russell avoided a repeater on the river when the {9-Diamonds} fell to send his opponent to the rail and climb to 33,000 in chips.

To Show or Not to Show

Table talk at Table 20 has turned to the topic of whether players should show down cards when they don't have to (for example, when all other players fold). One player complained that he had shown down every winner that he held, but no other player at the table was doing the same.

"It's not fair," he said. "You're getting a read on me but I'm not getting a read on you."

Kirk Eliminated

The APPT Grand Final is over for Matthew Kirk. Despite his recent double-up, he found himself still somewhat short on chips. He got involved in a four-way pot in which each player contributed 2,500 chips before the flop. On the flop of {8-Spades} {A-Diamonds} {J-Clubs}, Kirk shipped his last 3,825 into the middle. Action folded to Mark Deutsch, who tanked for several minutes. He decided to call as soon as Kirk called a clock on him.

Kirk: {A-Spades} {K-Spades}
Deutsch: {Q-Clubs} {Q-Hearts}

Deutsch was in very bad shape, but hit a miracle card on the turn with the {Q-Spades}. Kirk had outs to a straight or flush but missed them all when the river fell {J-Hearts}. He's out of the tournament.

Presto Goot!

Josh Pang Ang
Josh Pang Ang
Pocket fives have been kind to Josh Pang Ang so far today. He eliminated one player who was all in preflop with {A-Clubs} {K-Diamonds} against Ang's pocket fives. Fives were the winning hand on a board of {9-Clubs} {4-Diamonds} {4-Clubs} {Q-Clubs} {8-Spades}.

A short while later, Ang found himself in a pot against two opponents. On a flop of {10-Spades} {2-Spades} {5-Diamonds}, one opponent led out for 1,600. Ang flat-called that bet before the opponent behind him raised to 5,000. That raise folded the original bettor but brought a surprising reraise from Ang to 10,500. All the chips were quickly in, with Ang tabling {5-Hearts} {5-Clubs} against his opponent's {4-Spades} {5-Spades}. The board paired on the turn with the {2-Clubs}, ensuring that Ang would win the pot.

In quick succession thereafter, Ang was dealt pocket queens and won a small pot against one opponent, and then flopped a set of sixes but got no action. He's running hot right now and is sitting behind almost 50,000 in chips.

The Wild Wild West

Matthew Kirk on the short stack

In a battle from the west, Matthew Kirk raised to 475 from the button and fellow Western Australian Michael Pedley made the call in the small blind.

The flop was {10-Hearts}{6-Hearts}{K-Spades} and both players checked. The turn brought the {6-Diamonds} and Pedley led out for 600. Kirk bumped it up to 2,000 but Pedley was prepared for war as he moved all of his chips defiantly into the middle.

Kirk cringed and released his hand, leaving himself only 3,000 in chips as he sighed sarcastically "Well it's been a great day!"

Chad in Control, But Vanessa is Out the Door

Rousso gone
Rousso gone
The player on the button opened with a raise to 500 and Chad Brown made the call on the big blind. The flop came down {2-Spades}{Q-Hearts}{K-Hearts} and Brown checked to the player on the button who fired 1,150. Brown made the call.

The turn brought the {2-Clubs} and Brown checked to the button, who fired another bullet worth 1,800. Brown again made the call.

The river was the {Q-Diamonds} and Brown checked for the third time and again his opponent came out firing, this time for 2,000. However this time Brown put in a check-raise, making it 4,500 to go and forcing a fold from his opponent.

Brown collects another pot as he approaches 50,000 in chips.

Meanwhile on a nearby table, Vanessa Rousso wasn't having as much fortune. Rousso raised under the gun to 550, before the Greg Cook made it 2,000 to go from the button. Rousso made the call and they saw a flop of {5-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}.

Rousso checked to Cook who fired 3,800. Rousso then moved all in for 11,500 and Cook made the call. Rousso tabled {J-Spades}{J-Diamonds} for an overpair, but had run into the {A-Hearts}{A-Spades} of Cook. The turn was the {7-Hearts} and river the {3-Hearts} and the day of Rousso is brought to an abrupt end.

Scekic's Wish Denied

"I've been awake for two days and just want to go home," Jovan Scekic told Kristine Milinkovic as she contemplated calling his all-in bet of 5,400. Upon hearing that, Milinkovic made the call with {8-Hearts} {8-Spades} and found herself up against Scekic's {A-Spades} {K-Spades}. The board ran out {J-Diamonds} {A-Hearts} {10-Spades} {3-Spades} {4-Spades} to make a flush for Scekic. He doubled up to approximately 11,000 as a result.

Obst Out

James "Andy McLEOD" Obst becomes our first high profile casualty
James "Andy McLEOD" Obst becomes our first high profile casualty
Harris Pavlou opened with a raise to 525 and James "Andy McLEOD" Obst made the call in the big blind.

They took a flop of {2-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} where Obst checked to Pavlou, who fired 600. Obst then check-raised to 2,200 and Pavlou made the call. The turn was the {Q-Hearts} and Obst fired out 6,200 before Pavlou moved all in. Obst made the call and the cards were tabled:

Obst: {5-Spades}{7-Spades}
Pavlou: {10-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}

Obst had flopped two pair but ran into the flopped flush of Pavlou! In a huge clash, Obst would need to improve on the river to survive; however the {A-Diamonds} landed to end the day for the online phenom as Pavlou storms to a tournament-leading 56,500 chips!
