APPT Macau - $15k High Rollers Event

Day 1 Completed

Final Table Moved to 3:00 p.m. Local Time

Team PokerStars Pro Emad Tahtouh
Team PokerStars Pro Emad Tahtouh
Because of the late finish, the production crew has decided to push back the start of tomorrow's final table from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00, in order to give the players an extra hour of sleep.

The two biggest story lines of the day would have to be Team PokerStars Pro Emad Tahtouh's monstrous 2.5-1 chip lead over his closest opponent heading into the final table and Liz Lieu earning her second trip to a major event's final table in less than 72 hours.

Emad will unbag 343,500 worth of chips tomorrow afternoon to start the day, while David Paul Steicke, owner of the tournament's second largest stack, will bring 142,000 to the table.

Equally impressive is the fact that Liz Lieu is now two-for-two in Macau, having also reached the finale of the APPT Macau Main Event, which took place last night.

We hope you'll join us tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 p.m. local time for our continued coverage of the PokerStars.net APPT Macau $15,000 buy-in High Rollers Event as we play down from nine to one. Tomorrow's champion will receive $368,640 in prize money and a whole lot of bragging rights and the line-up promises to provide plenty of action.

Until then, from the tournament floor inside the Grand Waldo Hotel & Casino in Macau, good night and good luck!

Dzianisan Eliminated by Emad Tahtouh; Final Table Set!

After a lengthy hand-for-hand session, 9th place has been decided, thus bringing an end to Day 1 of the PokerStars.net APPT Macau High Roller's Event. Tournament chip leader and Team PokerStars Pro Emad Tahtouh did the damage, eliminating Aliansandr Dzianisan from the tournament with pocket queens against Dzianisan's pocket nines. The action went as follows:

Dzianisan made it 8,500 to go from the cutoff and Emad kicked it up to 25,000 from the big blind; Dzianisan just called. The flop came {4-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{5-Spades} and Emad led out with a 25,000 bet. Dzianisan then shoved all in over the top of Emad's bet, raising a total of 71,000; Emad made the call.

Tahtouh: {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}
Dzianisan: {9-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}

The hand was cemented on the turn after the {Q-Hearts} rolled off the deck, giving Tahtouh an unbeatable, pot-clinching set.

Dzianisan's elimination set the stage for tomorrow's eight-handed final table, at which Emad Tahtouh will begin with a commanding chip lead over the field.

False Alarm

The marathon that has been the final two tables of the high roller's event just saw a jolt in the action that ultimately resulted in a chopped pot.

Aliansandr Dzianisan made it 8,000 to go from under-the-gun and Liz Lieu re-popped it to 25,000 from the button. The action folded back around to Dzianisan, who re-raised all in, having Lieu covered. Lieu stood up out of her chair and briefly considered her decision before eventually slamming her stack into the middle. A couple members of the audience spouted out, "Yeah!" thinking this might be the final hand of the night.

However, when the players turned over their cards, the anticipation died on the spot as both Lieu and Dzianisan revealed variations of Big Slick:

Lieu: {A-Spades}{K-Hearts}
Dzianisan: {A-Diamonds}{K-Spades}

The flop brought some hope for those secretly plotting Lieu's demise, as it gave Dzianisan two diamonds and a chance for a runner-runner flush. The turn cooperated as well, bringing a third diamond for Dzianisan. Seemingly everyone in the room but Liz Lieu and her devoted fans let out a disappointed sigh as the river blanked off an inconsequential {7-Hearts}.

. . . and the band played on.

Juanda Eliminates Benson in 10th Place

Gary Benson
Gary Benson
John Juanda has just eliminated Gary Benson from the tournament in 10th place - just two shy of the money. Juanda made it 20,000 to go from the small blind and Benson moved all in from the big for a total of 23,000; Juanda called.

Juanda: {10-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}
Benson: {A-Hearts}{4-Hearts}

As the dealer spread the {10-Spades}{K-Diamonds}{4-Clubs} flop, all Gary Benson could manage to say was, "Jesus Christ . . ." The turn gave Benson additional outs to a straight, but the {5-Clubs} on the river locked it up for Juanda. Though visibly and understandably disappointed, Benson absorbed the loss with class, shaking Juanda's hand and wishing the table luck before exiting the tournament area.

With just nine players left, the tournament is now being played hand-for-hand on two short-handed tables.

Benson Doubles Up

Gary Benson of Australia has just tripled up, courtesy of David Paul Steicke (and a handful of blinds and antes) after winning a coinflip holding {K-Clubs}{J-Clubs} against Steicke's pocket threes.

The board filled out {K-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{A-Diamonds}{7-Clubs} and Benson took down the pot and 15,000 new chips.
