It's not every day you can scramble together 38 players to put up $100,000 on a single tournament. Yet somehow, this month of January 2011 has supported two such events on opposite halves of the world just two weeks apart.
Well, it's time for the high rollers to hit the ATM again. Rumors have been circling for a week or so, and T.D. Christian has just made the announcement that tickled the ears of the 28 players still seated in this event.
On January 27th, the Aussie Millions will host the largest buy-in tournament ever assembled. It will cost $250,000 to enter the one-off event, and the winner of the single eight-handed table will take all $2,000,000 up for grabs.
As soon as the announcement was made official, Tony G scurried over to the floorman to find out if there was still a seat open at that very expensive table. If he needs backers, we can afford to buy, like, half a percent of his action. Maybe.
Sorel Mizzi raised to 5,000 from early position and Andrew Pantling called from the button. The flop came down and Mizzi bet 7,000. Pantling raised to 20,500 and Mizzi folded.
Mizzi dropped to 215,000 after losing another pot to Pantling. Pantling increased to 75,000.
Derek Cheung raised to 5,000 from under the gun. Sorel Mizzi was in the next seat and made the call while everyone else folded. Both players then proceeded to check the flop to see the pair the board with cowboys on the turn. Cheung bet 10,000 and Mizzi folded.
Winfred Yu raised to 5,000 and David Steicke called from the big blind. The two players went to battle on the flop of and Steicke was first to act. He checked and Yu bet 7,000. Steicke made the call.
The dealer placed the out on the turn, pairing the board. Steicke checked. Yu bet a little bigger this time, firing 15,000. Steicke had enough and folded his hand, allowing Yu to improve to 155,000. Steicke slipped back to 170,000.
