Remaining Players Ready for Day 2 of Record-Breaking Aussie Millions Main Event

Aussie Millions
Aussie Millions

Day 2 of the now record-breaking 2018 Aussie Millions Main Event here and all eyes will be looking towards the tournament clock to see if the number of players in the biggest, richest and most prestigious tournament in the Southern Hemisphere can break the 800-player mark.

The figure currently stands at 787 with 389 players remaining, but with several players tipped to join the Main Event field on Day 2, including Fedor Holz, that number is expected to grow. Late registration is open until the end of Level 8 (around 2:15 pm), which is the first level of the day.

A whole host of big names are through to Day 2, so if you didn’t manage to grab any of the action from any of the Day 1s, here’s a quick recap to get you up to speed

Day 1a recap

There were several contenders for the Day 1a chip lead, but eventually, Lee Armstrong (165,400) pipped John Overbeek (164,400) by just 1,000 chips. Several big names are still in, with former champions Manny Stavropoulos (105,200) and David Gorr (35,600) joined by bracelet-winners Max Silver (44,900) and Kristen Bicknell (19,900).

Other stacks include Mike Del Vecchio (153,900), Alex Lee Lin Hwaa (151,900), Cale Treacy (151,000), Najeem Ajez (150,800), Michael Egan (126,700), Duff Charette (96,700), Harry Demetriou (83,200), Benny Spindler (75,700) and Daniel Neilson (59,000).

Day 1b recap

Cole Swannack’s Day 1b-leading stack of 197,300 was helped in part by winning a huge pot off of Australian bracelet-winner James Obst in the last level of the day. Swannack flopped an ace with ace-king to crack the kings of his opponent, sending the New Zealander soaring to the top of the counts.

Joining him on Day 2 are 2005 WSOP Main Event champion Joe Hachem (56,100) and 2015 WSOP APAC Main Event winner Scott Davies (107,800). Big stacks Tobias Hausen (156,800), Stephen Graner (145,800) and Jonathan Karamalikis (137,100) are well placed at the start of the day, with the following players also advancing: Alex Foxen (86,900), Jack Salter (68,300), Winfred Yu (56,900), Sam Panzica (43,000), Ana Marquez (36,000), Kahle Burns (28,600), former $100,000 Challenge winner Yevgeniy Timoshenko (25,500), Daiva Byrne (12,100) and Manig Loeser (10,100.

Day 1c recap

Two former champions advanced from Day 1c with Ari Engel (61,900) and Ami Barer (117,500). The pair fared slightly bet than defending champion Shane Vijayaram who was eliminated at the hands of former WSOP November Niner Federico Butteroni.

Just like Day 1a, there was a close race for the chip lead, with Frank Pezzaniti eventually bagging (199,000), good enough for the overall chip lead coming into Day 2. Close behind him are Ludovic Riehl (194,600) and Kitty Kuo (190,000).

Other big stacks and notables that survived the final flight include three-time WSOP bracelet winner Benny Glaser (153,000), Ludovic Geilich (136,900), Matt Affleck (130,600), Jarred Graham (129,100), Artur Koren (92,800), Federico Butteroni (91,500), Bart Lybaert (88,700), Martin Kozlov (88,300) and Australian Poker Hall of Famer Leo Boxell (55,500).

Day 2

Today's schedule is slightly shorter than the three starting flights, with just five 90-minute levels planned. There will be a 15-minute break after each level, and no dinner break, meaning play will finish at roughly 9:15 pm AEDT.

Holz Joins the Field; Doubles Up

Level 8 : 400/800, 100 ante
Fedor Holz
Fedor Holz

As expected, Fedor Holz was one of the eight players to join the field at the start of Day 2.

When we got to his table he was in a pot against Shane Moran with the flop reading {7-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{j-Spades}. Both players checked and the turn was the {5-Diamonds}.

Holz bet 2,700 and Moran called.

The river was the {8-Diamonds}. Holz checked to Moran who bet 6,000 and Holz check-raised all in for 25,300.

Moran shook his head. "It's sick," he said. "I got greedy!" He asked for his bet to be pulled into the middle and eventually he called.

Holz showed {q-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds} for a king-high flush while Moran mucked {q-Hearts}{10-Spades} for the nut straight.

Victor Cracks Aces to Send O'Kearney to the Rail

Dara O'Kearney
Dara O'Kearney

Dara O'Kearney raised to 1,600 from early position and Justin Victor three-bet to 4,100 from the next position. It folded back around to O'Kearney who four-bet to 11,700 and Victor called.

O'Kearney continued for 8,000 on the {9-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{4-Spades} flop and Victor called. On the {j-Hearts} turn, the Irish former international ultra runner thought for a moment before moving all in for 18,500. His opponent snap-called.

Dara O'Kearney: {a-Spades}{a-Hearts} - one pair (aces)
Justin Victor: {j-Spades}{j-Clubs} - set of jacks

The river {8-Diamonds} could not save O'Kearney and he was sent to the rail, with Victor moving up over 100,000 with that stroke of luck.

Pezzaniti Busts Foxen in Massive Pot

Level 8 : 400/800, 100 ante
Alex Foxen
Alex Foxen

Only a few minutes ago Alex Foxen had check-shoved the river of an ace-high board into a bet of 7,000 by James Broom and a call by Sung Joo Hyun in the small blind to force a fold to boost his stack to around 140,000. However, that wouldn't last long as the American poker pro was ousted soon after by start-of-the-day chip leader Frank Pezzaniti.

Until the {J-Spades}{5-Spades}{3-Spades}{K-Hearts} turn there were already more than 70,000 into the middle and Pezzaniti bet 70,000 from early position. Foxen was on the button and engaged in table chat. "Why bet so much? Do you want me to fold?" Foxen continued for a minute.

"Do you have the ace of spades and just want to go with it? Ace jack? Is that what it is?

That even got some replies off Pezzaniti before Foxen eventually announcing all in for 115,000. Pezzaniti immediately tossed in a single chip for the call and Foxen asked his opponent if he had a flush.

Alex Foxen: {3-Clubs}{3-Hearts}
Frank Pezzaniti: {K-Spades}{8-Spades}

The {10-Clubs} on the river bricked off and that sent Pezzaniti's stack up to a massive 450 big blinds towards the end of the first level on Day 2.

Geilich Explains Strong Day 2 Start

Level 8 : 400/800, 100 ante
Ludovic Geilich
Ludovic Geilich

We caught up with Ludovic Geilich on the first break. He's gone from 137,000 in chips at the start of the day to well over 200,000.

"I got moved to this table pretty early on," said Geilich. "I had won about 20,000 from my first table then it broke straight away. So I came over here, and my friend Ami Barer [2016 Aussie Millions winner] is a good friend of mine, and he's sat directly across from mine. It's quite funny because us two just had all the chips!

"There was this guy to my right who had about 60,000, and I managed to get them all in a matter of three hands. I won every pot, and he just ran pretty bad against my in most spots. He opened {2-}{2-} and I three-bet {q-}{q-} on the button. He called and the flop came {q-}{10-}{2-} - that's all she wrote.

"I've been playing solid. And if I've not been playing solid, then I'm three-betting and four-betting with the best hands to do so. I'll three-bet {a-}{j-} or cold four-bet {a-}{q-}. I'm still playing solid, just not doing it with the trash. I'm just making plays with the best hands to make plays with!"

Glaser Takes A Chunk From Armstrong

In a three-bet pot between Lee Armstrong in the cutoff and Benny Glaser on the button, action was on the latter on a {Q-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{5-Spades} board. Glaser bet 4,100 and received a call from Armstrong. Both players then checked the {6-Spades} on the turn.

On the {5-Clubs} river, Armstrong bet 12,700. Glaser had a trick left up his sleeve, as he raised to 38,000. Armstrong was visibly unhappy with the situation and thought for nearly a minute, but decided he couldn't get away from it.

Glaser slapped down {K-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} for trip fives and Armstrong mucked with some disgust.

Davies Eliminates Panzica

Level 9 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Sam Panzica
Sam Panzica

Scott Davies opened to 2,200 on the button and Sam Panzica defended his big blind.

The flop came {k-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{a-Diamonds} and Panzica check-called a bet of 2,000 from Davies. Panzica repeated the action for a bet of 6,300 on the {10-Clubs} turn.

The river was the {3-Spades} and Panzica checked a third time. Davies bet 40,000, covering Panzica's remaining stack of around 20,000. Eventually, Panzica called.

Davies showed {k-Spades}{10-Spades} for two pair, which was good, with Panzica's cards going directly into the muck. Panzica was eliminated in the second level of the day.

Former WSOP Champion Jacobson Thinks Aussie Millions Could Get "Way, Way Bigger"

Level 9 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Martin Jacobson
Martin Jacobson

It's not 2014 WSOP Main Event champion Martin Jacobson's first trip Down Under for the Aussie Millions, with three cashes and two final tables in the $25,000 Challenge and $100,000 Challenge on his poker resume, and the Swede is definitely having a blast on Day 2 of the Main Event.

"It's gone pretty good," said Jacobson during the first break. "I doubled up! I love it here. It's my favorite city. I've come here five times and I just love Melbourne as a city!

"The food is awesome and it's the perfect time of the year to come here with the tennis, and the fact that it's summer here and winter back home!"

We asked Jacobson what his thoughts about the venue are, and why so many people love the Aussie Millions as a festival.

"I love the Crown; this event is just such a great tournament. It's great that [the Main Event] keeps growing. There have been solid numbers over the last couple of years.

"It's a little bit bigger this year; without any online satellites! If they would partner up with a poker site it could get way, way bigger."

Klatt Sends Speranza on the Rail

Level 9 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Andreas Klatt
Andreas Klatt

Andreas Klatt won a bracelet at the 2017 World Series of Poker in Europe and a few days later, Gianluca Speranza finished second in the Main Event at the very same location at King's Casino in Rozvadov. Both ended up on the same table on Day 2 here in Melbourne and just clashed with almost identical stacks.

Speranza defended his big blind against a raise by Klatt and check-called a bet on the {J-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{4-Diamonds} flop. On the {10-Hearts} turn, Speranza checked again and Klatt bet 10,000. After some consideration, Speranza check-raised all in for 41,000 and Klatt called with the slightly superior stack.

Gianluca Speranza: {J-Clubs}{10-Clubs}
Andreas Klatt: {9-Spades}{9-Diamonds}

The {Q-Spades} on the river was a blank and the Italian was left empty-handed.
