Flashback to 2020: 8-Game Title Heads to Finland with Nevanlinna

Jussi Nevanlinna

In 2020, Jussi Nevanlinna secured the Aussie Millions 8-Game title and A$51,975 after a grueling final table, defeating American Andrew Kelsall heads-up.

"Every time you win something, it's awesome," Nevanlinna told PokerNews. "But winning a tournament, that doesn't happen that often, so it's so so special when it does happen.

"Finland's really cold this time of year, and although it takes me 22 hours to get here, I would gladly come here and not play poker at all. I just love the place so much!"

There was a ceremonial shuffle up and deal today from Josh Giddey.

Giddey, an Australian professional basketball player for the Chicago Bulls, has already entered the Main Event and he was excited for action to get underway.

"It's a lot of fun," he told tournament director Danny McDonagh. "There are a lot of great players here at Crown.

"Obviously there's gonna be a big prize pool at the end of it, so we'll have to see how we go!"

Last time the Aussie Millions took place, Jackson Warne notched two cashes. He's now looking forward to this year's event, and rates his chances as "pretty high."

"Otherwise what's the point in playing?" he told Pepperstone, Official Trading Partner of the Aussie Millions Poker Championship Presented by CrownBet.

Jackson's father Shane Warne was also a regular at the Aussie Millions, cashing seven times at the festival including at a Joe Hachem & Shane Warne Charity Event in 2012.

Warne, who sadly passed away in 2022, was a massive poker fan, something his son remembers fondly.

"Poker for me and dad was our biggest hobby," said Jackson. "After dad finished with cricket, it was golf and poker. I'm not a very good golfer, but I love poker.

"Watching him play home games with his friends, how they'd all just laugh and play music. I knew I wanted to be in that environment. So when I was old enough I just started playing."

"Some of my happiest memories are with my dad playing poker, especially during the Aussie Millions."
