Ian Auvil Wins Bar Poker Open Florida World Championship ($50,000)

Level 30 : Blinds 150,000/300,000, 300,000 ante
Ian Auvil
Ian Auvil

It was expected to be wild from start to finish, and the final day of the Bar Poker Open Florida World Championship more than lived up to those expectations, crowning Ian Auvil of the No-Limit Pub Poker Tour its newest champion.

After a thrilling roller coaster of a final table, Auvil defeated Ronald Kaepernick heads-up to take home the title and the $50,000 first prize.

That purse was the very sizeable lion’s share of the $122,688 prize pool, built from a field of 426 entries in the latest successful iteration of the BPO here at the Palm Beach Kennel Club.

The win is by far the largest of Auvil’s career. He was at a loss for words afterward, but the recreational player from Stuart, Florida was sure to thank his boisterous and supportive rail.

Auvil certainly embodied the spirit of the Bar Poker Tour, as he was the most vibrant and exuberant character at the final table. Auvil had an absolute blast from start to finish, almost ignoring the pressure of playing for a tournament score the likes of which he’d never before been so close to.

Day 2 Action

Monday was expected to be a day of lightning-quick eliminations with the chip leader having less than 40 big blinds once the level changed just three minutes into the day and it was certainly that.

Just 30 minutes into the day, the 43 returning players had been trimmed to 27, and by the first break just over two hours in, the field was down to 17.

Billy Hayes
Billy Hayes

Among the early casualties shockingly was start-of-day chip leader [PLAYER="billy-hayes"]Billy Hayes[/PLAYER]. In a blind vs blind clash, Hayes three-bet jammed bottom pair into John Purdy’s middle pair and flush draw in the biggest pot of the tournament at that point.

Purdy made a flush to take the chip lead, and Hayes was left on fumes and eliminated shortly after.

The frantic pace of eliminations continued once down to two tables, and after less than four total hours of play, the final table of nine had been reached.

Players then broke for just over three hours to do some interviews, take a breath, and regroup before returning in the early evening to finish things on the BPO and Palm Beach Kennel Club livestream.

Once play resumed, the elimination of Bogdan Zavu in ninth place also saw a massive shift in the fortunes of the two chip leaders at that point, leading to the elimination of Chris Davis in eighth place.

Davis, who held the lead opted to slow play kings in the big blind after Zavu moved all in. He then jammed two times the size of the pot on a ten-high flop with Auvil behind him. The eventual champion had flopped a set of nines and happily called. Auvil held to score a massive double-up, while Davis was left short and eliminated shortly after.

David Phillips was the next to fall in seventh, followed by Purdy in sixth before the eliminations slowed considerably.

It wasn’t until Auvil’s kings held against Miguel Medrano’s ace-jack that another player was truly short-stacked. Medrano was eliminated shortly after in fifth place.

Auvil was down to three big blinds four-handed but managed to spin his stack back into contention to the point that after Paul Chamberlain’s elimination in fourth place, he was able to double-up through his eventual heads-up opponent, Kaepernick, to regain the chip lead. It would be one he wouldn’t relinquish.

Auvil then eliminated Gregg Bloom in third place after flopping the latest of several sets at the final table and holding on versus Bloom’s open-ended straight draw.

Heads-up play then lasted just two hands before Auvil finished the job by making Kaepernick his final victim to claim the title and that $50,000 first prize.

Ronald Kaepernick Eliminated in 2nd Place ($22,500)

Level 30 : Blinds 150,000/300,000, 300,000 ante
Ronald Kaepernick
Ronald Kaepernick

In just the second hand of heads-up play, Ronald Kaepernick moved all in with 108 for his last 2,800,000 and got called by Ian Auvil with K9.

Auvil was on the verge of an incredible win after coming back from three big blinds.

The flop came 342, bringing no help to Kaepernick.

The A turn brought Kaepernick some chop outs, but the 9 locked down the hand for Auvil with a pair of nines to take the title.

Kaepernick takes home $22,500 for his runner-up finish, while Auvil was declared the champion.

Gregg Bloom

Gregg Bloom raised on the button with Q10 to 1,200,000, leaving himself 1,700,000 behind. Ian Auvil called in the small blind with 33.

The flop came J93 and Auvil moved all in with his set of threes. Bloom called with his open-ended straight draw.

The turn though was the 9, filling up Auvil to cinch the hand. Just for good measure, he drilled the 3 on the river to make quads and bring the tournament to heads-up play between Auvil and Ronald Kaepernick.

Paul Chamberlain Eliminated in 4th Place ($5,200)

Level 29 : Blinds 100,000/200,000, 200,000 ante
Paul Chamberlain
Paul Chamberlain

Folded to Paul Chamberlain in the small blind, he moved all in for 1,400,000 holding 92, obviously hoping for a fold to steal the pot and add some chips to his shrinking stack.

Unfortunately for Chamberlain, Gregg Bloom held AJ in the big blind and called.

The flop came 1072, pairing Chamberlain's deuce to take the lead.

The K turn gave Bloom additional outs to Broadway, and the river brought the A, giving Bloom the win with a rivered ace to send Chamberlain home in fourth place.

The three remaining players are all now guaranteed at least $10,000.

Gregg Bloom raised to 400,000 in the cutoff with AQ and got called by Ronald Kaepernick in the small blind with 88.

The flop came 652 and Kaepernick led for 400,000. Bloom called to see the 9 on the turn.

The players now checked, and did so again on the 9 river as Kaepernick's two pair were good to take the pot, and the chip lead from Bloom.

Miguel Medrano

Miguel Medrano moved his last 270,000 into the middle with 77 and got called by Gregg Bloom in the big blind with Q5.

The flop came A32, bringing a world of outs to Bloom.

The A turn changed nothing, but the 4 on the river brought Bloom everything he could want with a wheel and a flush.

Medrano headed to the payout desk to pick up his 5th place money, while Bloom extended his chip lead.

Medrano Left on Fumes After Doubling Auvil

Level 27 : Blinds 60,000/120,000, 120,000 ante
Ian Auvil
Ian Auvil

After Ian Auvil raised on the button with KK, Miguel Medrano woke up with AJ in the small blind and moved all in for about 1,800,000.

Ronald Kaepernick folded and Auvil quickly called with a similar stack.

"No ace," called Auvil as the dealer spread a flop of 1084. Auvil's kings continued to hold on the 8 turn, and then finally with the 5 river.

The dealer counted down the chips to see if Medrano was still alive. He was barely just so, holding onto 200,000 chips, while Auvil moved solidly back into second place.

Chamberlain Bluffs Auvil

Level 26 : Blinds 50,000/100,000, 100,000 ante
Paul Chamberlain
Paul Chamberlain

Ian Auvil limped in the cutoff with Q10, which led to a limp from Ronald Kaepernick in the small blind with A4, and a check from Paul Chamberlain in the big blind with 87.

The flop came KJ5, and after Kaepernick checked, Chamberlain bet 220,000.

Auvil called with his open-ended straight draw and Kaepernick folded.

On the 5 turn, Chamberlain bet again, this time to the tune of 320,000. Auvil thought briefly, then showed his hand and folded.

As the livestream announcers begged for Chamberlain to show the bluff, Chamberlain did just that, drawing an eruption from the booth and a head shake from Auvil as the pot was pushed away from him.

John Purdy
John Purdy

Gregg Bloom raised to 225,000 in the hijack with AJ and was met with an all-in bet of 765,000 from John Purdy, holding 1010.

Bloom thought briefly and then called.

The flop came 888, bringing Purdy a full house. The turn was then 3, changing nothing, but the A on the river drilled Bloom, giving him a better full house to take the pot and the chip lead while sending Purdy to the rail in 6th place.

David Phillips
David Phillips

After Gregg Bloom limped Q8 in the small blind, David Phillips checked his KJ.

The action flop came KQ8, and action did indeed come with Bloom holding two pair and Phillips with top pair.

After Bloom checked, Phillips bet 125,000 and got check-raised by Bloom to 300,000. Phillips then moved all in for 925,000 and after a bit of thought, Bloom called.

The turn 4 and river 3 brought Phillips no help and his top pair went down in flames to eliminate him in 7th place.
