With play just getting underway on Day 1c many players have yet to register and take their seats.
Nonetheless, we've managed to spot a few familiar faces among the crowd.
Allard Broedelet is back at the Borgata, hoping to weave his way through the minefield just as he did in the suspended Event 1 from the Winter Poker Open. Broedelet was the chip leader with just 27 players left when that star-crossed tournament was put on ice due to a chip counterfeiting scandal.
Ted Goldbergh is also here today, and after being profiled along with his wife Debbie during PokerNews' Local Spotlight series last January, he is hoping to bag a stack in his backyard casino.
We've already spotted a trio of players who all failed to survive Day 1b of Event 1 yesterday; "Karate" Mike Santoro, Brian Ali, and Micah Raskin.
Despite lacking an elite poker résumé, Santoro became famous in the mid 2000's due to the often televised U.S. Poker Championships. Santoro didn't win the event, but his antics and actions made him somewhat of a household name in the poker community.
Brian Ali recorded a big six-figure score here in Atlantic City in 2011, winning a WSOPC event and $139,284. Since then Ali has never cashed for more than $3,848, but perhaps he will return to his winning ways here at Borgata.
With nearly $2 million in career live tournament earnings, Raskin is the most successful of this bunch. Raskin, a New York native, won the 2009 Borgata $500K Guaranteed Deep Stack Tournament for $320,231, and three years later reached the final table of EPT Sanremo. He has a handful of other six-figure scores, including another runner-up finish at Borgata, a win in a side event at EPT Berlin, and a final table appearance in the 2013 $25,000 High Roller at the PCA.
The cards will soon be back in the air at the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa for Day 1c of the Borgata Spring Poker Open's first event, the $560 buy-in $1 Million Guaranteed Reentry event. Day 1a saw a total of 358 entries recorded, while yesterday's second starting flight brought in 469 more buy-ins on board.
Today will see two more starting flights take place, as Day 1c and Day 1d take place throughout the day and into the wee hours of the morning. A total of 1,173 entries and reentries will need to be recorded for the $1 million guaranteed prize pool to be generated, but with hundreds of players having already fired a bullet and missed their mark, we expect the numbers to increase in a sufficient manner.
Dozens of notable names and poker pros took to the felt during the last two days, some bagging and tagging a stack for Day 2 already, while others will be back at it here today hoping the third time is truly the charm. Those who are through to Day 2 include local legend Joe McKeehen, Luke Edwards, Amnon Filippi, Tony Sinishtaj, Scott Baumstein and James Woods. Counted among the casualties thus far are Micah Raskin, Timothy Little, John D'Agostino, Megan Milburn, Rob Voigt and Joseph Stiers.
Those who went busto already can enter and reenter through Level 9 of each starting flight, while players with a small stack bagged up can elect to try, try again, hoping to hit a higher mark in their next try. This means the action will be fast and furious throughout the day, with players realizing that they only have a few more chances to make Day 2 - and play for part of the $1 million guaranteed prize pool.
