Level 9 : Blinds 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Edd-Christian Gerhardsen

The 2025 Coolbet Open €550 Main Event kicked off with Day 1a today, and a crowd of 157 entries made their way to the Chesterfield Poker Club in Tallinn. At the end of the nine levels of play, Norwegian player Edd-Christian Gerhardsen had gathered the most chips of the 62 survivors, bagging 247,000, more than eight times the starting stack of 30,000 and 165 big blinds at the start of Day 2.

As always with the Coolbet Open, the poker room had a friendly and fun atmosphere throughout the day. Aside from collecting chips, Gerhardsen was seen laughing and bantering with the other players at his table, among whom was hometown hero Jaanus Kippel, who ended the day as second in chips with 220,000.

Finland's Jonny Raninen had to reenter early, but grinded his way to the podium as he ended with 217,000, scoring a double knock-out along the way. Frenchman Anthony Lesoismier-Geniaux needed three bullets before he started to pick up steam, eventually ending with 216,500. Sweden's best performer was Tomas Kaarvall with 164,500, while Iceland's Runar Runarsson also made the international top ten with a stack of 130,500.

Twitch streamer Ylva "Jevakim" Thorsrud also made it through to Day 2, increasing her stack to 40,500. Meanwhile, Diego Rodriguez Cantillana (32,000) was the only survivor of a small Chilean delegation, who traveled halfway across the world to travel the Coolbet Open in Tallinn.

Last year's champion Anders Bjorkheim was less fortunate and booked an early exit after shoving into a flush. 2022 Coolbet Open winner Kaido Mikk also departed before the day's end, but they and every other interested player can try again as Day 1b, the second and final starting flight, will take place Thursday, August 14.

Day 1b will start at noon local time and follow the same structure as Day 1a, meaning nine levels of 45 minutes are in the cards, with a 15-minute break planned after Level 3 and Level 6. Those who are unsuccessful on Day 1b still have more opportunities to become a Coolbet Open champion, as late registration and unlimited reentries will be possible until the conclusion of the first level of Day 2.

A bumper crowd is expected for Day 1b, so make sure to tune back in to PokerNews to not miss anything from the 2025 Coolbet Open Main Event.

Preflop Mistake Costs Jaakson Tournament Life

Level 9 : Blinds 600/1,200, 1,200 ante

After Fredrik Kaarvall had opened from middle position, Ott Jaakson put in about two-thirds of his 35,000 stack from the small blind. The short-stacked big blind quickly folded, after which Kaarvall announced an all-in bet with the covering stack.

"I didn't see that [you raised]," Jaakson stated, "but I think I'm committed now." He called off his remaining chips, and the cards went face-up.

Fredrik Kaarvall: AK

Jaakson received no help on the 257Q3 board. Kaarvall's big slick held, and Jaakson took a frustrating exit during the final few hands of Day 1a.

Gronli Gets Value With Straight Flush

Level 6 : Blinds 300/600, 600 ante

After amassing a sizable pot of 22,000, small blind Olavi Paluviir and Knut Gronli under the gun both checked the K8109 turn.

The J fell on the river, seeing Paluviir knuckle the table again. Gronli put in a bet of 8,500, which Paluviir called after a minute of thought.

Gronli tabled KQ for the absolute nuts with a straight flush. Paluviir quickly mucked his cards as the pot was shipped to his opponent.

Level 5 : Blinds 200/500, 500 ante
Anders Bjorkheim
Anders Bjorkheim

Anders Bjorkheim made it 1,200 to go in early position, and called when Jari Hurri three-bet to 3,600 in the cutoff. Bjorkheim check-called Hurri's continuation-bet of 1,700 on the 64Q flop, but the 5 turn prompted him to lead out for 4,000.

Hurri raised to 11,000, and Bjorkheim inquired after his opponent's stack before putting him all-in for 31,800. Hurri snapped it off, and the cards were revealed.

Anders Bjorkheim: 77

Bjorkheim had no outs left against the flopped flush of Hurri, who officially doubled up when the K river completed the board. Bjorkheim paid his opponent and was left with 18 big blinds in his stack.

Saevarsson Jams Into Sahli's Aces

Level 4 : Blinds 200/400, 400 ante
Yanis Sahli
Yanis Sahli

The action was picked up on a J749 turn. With 18,000 in the pot, Steinar Saevarsson fired a bet of 11,000 from early position. Yanis Sahli flicked in a call from the hijack, after which the 6 river emerged from the deck.

Saevarsson moved in his stack of 17,900. Sahli called off his stack of 17,000 after a few seconds, causing a displeased Saevarsson to show QQ for a pair of queens.

Sahli had the higher pocket pair with his AA, and he doubled up to be among the leaders in the room. Saevarsson was left with just three big blinds, which he would lose not much later.

Arriving with the completed board of J5Q210 already dealt, Maksim Belomestnoi fired a bet of 2,200 from the small blind into a pot of 9,800.

Jeremy Doll sat in the big blind and raised to 11,000, which sent Belomestnoi into a deep tank. After several minutes, Belomestnoi elected to muck his hand.

Doll could only laugh as he showed his opponent K6 for a stone-cold bluff and raked in the chips.

Defending Champion Off to Good Start

Level 2 : Blinds 100/200, 200 ante
Anders Bjorkheim
Anders Bjorkheim

Diego Rodriguez Cantillana limped in from middle position. Sander Eentalu completed his small blind before last year's Coolbet Open Main Event winner Anders Bjorkheim raised to 1,200 in the big blind.

Both Rodriguez and Eentalu called, and a flop of 87J was fanned. Eentalu checked to Bjorkheim, who continued for 1,300. Rodriguez made a quick fold, but Eentalu called to the 4 turn, where he led out for 2,500.

Bjorkheim called, and the 7 river completed the board. After Eentalu checked, Bjorkheim piled in a massive bet of 15,000.

Eentalu snap-called, but he tapped the table and mucked his cards when Bjorkheim showed JJ for the best possible full house, dragging the big pot shortly after sitting down.
