Straight Flush > Quads

Moments ago, a table in the back row of the convention center exploded with cheers. It piqued our interest, and once the cell phone cameras started coming out, we opted to rush over.

When we arrived, we saw something quite incredible - a straight flush and quads. In the same hand.

The board was {2-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}, and Wee Tan was left shaking his head with {2-Hearts}{2-Spades}. His opponent, David Paredes, was all smiles with {5-Clubs}{4-Clubs}.

According to Paredes, he was all in on the river for 37,975. Tan obviously made the call, and despite losing the large pot, is still healthy with around 50,000 chips.

Paredes is now up to around 90,000 chips, and has a story to tell for the rest of his life.

Jaffee Holding Steady

After giving some of his newly-won chips back, Jared Jaffee just won back about 10,000.

He opened to 1,400 in middle position and the player in the cutoff three-bet to 3,400. Jaffee called and then check-called 6,800 on the {10-Clubs}{7-Spades}{4-Spades} flop. The {2-Spades} turn and {9-Hearts} river were both checked by both and Jaffee tabled {8-Clubs}{8-Hearts}.

His opponent mucked and Jaffee took it down.

Jewell Runs Into Quads

Kurt Jewell opened to 1,300 preflop form middle position and the next player to act bumped it to 3,500 from the hijack. Action folded around to Jewell who called, landing a {10-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{9-Clubs} flop.

Jewell check-called 4,000, and did so for 7,000 (it might have been 7,500) after the {5-Clubs} turn. The {10-Clubs} hit the river and Jewell checked for a third time, quickly calling when his opponent bet 20,000.

However, Jewell quickly mucked when his opponent turned over {A-Clubs}{10-Hearts}.

Missing in Action

"Does He Have to Show?"

The board was completed {6-Spades}{4-Spades}{10-Spades}{k-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}. When checked to, Scott Baumstein tossed out 1,750. His opponent went into the tank, then asked, "If I call, does he have to show? He made me show last time."

The dealer nodded.

"It was your turn to show," Baumstein interjected.

His opponent laughed, calling the response "defensive," and then called. Baumstein tabled {a-Clubs}{k-Hearts} for a pair of kings, and won the pot.

Lamanna's Left

Brian Lamanna busts his first bullet
Brian Lamanna busts his first bullet

Brian Lamanna was first to act on a board of {8-Spades}{9-Spades}{q-Diamonds}. He checked. Jared Jaffee tossed out 3,500, a third player called, and Lamanna check-shoved for what looked like 25,000 or so. Jaffee made the call, and the third player folded.

Lamanna: {q-Spades}{10-Clubs}
Jaffee: {q-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}

The turn and river came {8-Diamonds}, {4-Spades} respectively, and Lamanna was eliminated.

Jaffee is now up to around 130,000 chips.

Three Bullets from Jewell

Kurt Jewell opened to 1,300, and was called by four opponents. The dealer fanned {2-Spades}{4-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}, the action checked to Jewell, and he continued for 2,250. Only one player called.

The turn was the {8-Clubs}, Jewell led for 4,800, and his opponent made the call.

The {6-Clubs} completed the board, and Jewell emptied the chamber, firing a third bullet worth 10,800. After a moment for though, the player called. Jewell instantly flipped over two black tens for a flopped set, and raked in the pot.

Corcione Gets There

Picking up the action after a {9-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{6-Hearts} flop, Robert Corcione and a second player checked. Matt Glantz bet 3,700, Corcione called, and the third player in the hand popped it to 10,025. Glantz folded immediately, but Corcione spent a good two minutes in the tank before re-raising to 23,500.

A quick re-raise all in for about 32,000 came from his opponent and Corcione had little choice but to call with {6-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}. Corcione was behind the {A-Hearts}{10-Hearts} of his opponent, but the {9-Spades} landed on the turn to fill up Corcione. Though his opponent had an out to a straight flush, he was basically packed up and ready to leave by the time the {2-Hearts} hit the river.

Schwartz Takes One Out

An early-position player shoved for 10,100 and Justin Schwartz looked him up from late position.

Schwartz tabled {10-Clubs}{10-Spades}, dominating his opponent's {9-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}. A safe board rolled out for Schwartz, now up to about 60,000.
