Brit-Watch

It's not going well for a number of UK players here today.

John Tabatabai, down to 1,500 after the blinds went through him, minimum-raised from the button and got called by the also short-stacked big blind. The big blind checked the {J-Clubs} {Q-Clubs} {6-Clubs} flop and Tabatabai stuck his last 1,200 in, but the big blind couldn't quite do it and passed.

Also not doing well are Steve Jelinek (4,000, and perhaps regretting the lengths he went to to get a seat), and Julian Thew -- up a little from his earlier 3,000, he's now on around 5,000 and remains cheerful.

On the other hand, the Milkybars may well be on Ben Grundy as he's just doubled up to around 18,000. It looks as though the chips went in on the flop or turn, although his opponent's hand is somewhat interesting.

Grundy: {7-Clubs} {10-Clubs}
Opponent: {A-Spades} {8-Diamonds}

Board: {Q-Diamonds} {Q-Clubs} {4-Clubs} {10-Diamonds} {5-Spades}

Lodden Picked Off (On the River?)

Johnny stares down that fateful board
Johnny stares down that fateful board
A short time after taking the majority of Johnny Lodden's chips, John O'Shea was gunning for the rest of them. Lodden opened with a raise to 450, and O'Shea came along in position. The flop brought {K-Spades} {J-Clubs} {8-Clubs} . Lodden check-called a bet of about 1,200.

Fourth street was the {Q-Spades}. Lodden again allowed O'Shea to bet, this time calling 2,200 to see the final card.

The river was the {J-Diamonds}, pairing the board. Lodden checked, and O'Shea announced that he was all in, having his man slightly covered. Lodden took just a few seconds to consider before sliding his remaining chips, approximately 6,000, into the center in one neat stack.

O'Shea tabled {A-Diamonds} {J-Hearts}, and it was the winner. A disgusted look befell Lodden as spun his cards into the air, landing face-down in the muck. He shook hands with the table, wished them luck, and then inched his way through the mass of humanity and out the exit.

Tabatabai Battered

Tabatabai - in trouble
Tabatabai - in trouble
Fireworks on Table Tabatabai, as the eponymous John T. doubled up a short-stacked Ilari Sahamies, the chips presumably going in on the flop.

Tabatabai: {J-?} {7-?}
Sahamies: {5-?} {5-?}

Board: {J-?} {2-?} {5-?} {Q-?} {2-?}

Sahamies is now on a fairly respectable 6,000, while Tabatabai drops to just 2,500.

There Are a Lot of People Here

Now well into level three and we're still finding some famous faces that somehow ducked under our collective radar during the first two hours of play.

Recently discovered:

- 2007 GUKPT champion Mike Ellis
- British online sicko Ben "Milkybar Kid" Grundy
- cheery American Bill Chen
- EPT London winner Michael Martin
- WSOP bracelet winner Marty Smyth

Thater Not Getting Much Respect

Katja Thater
Katja Thater
Katja Thater has an impressive poker resume but that hasn't stopped the players at her table from playing back at her. Thater was the first player into the pot with a raise from middle position to 400. That didn't stop four other players from calling and taking the flop of {8-Diamonds} {10-Diamonds} {4-Clubs}. Everyone (including Thater) checked to the turn, which was the {3-Diamonds}. Everyone checked again. The river {10-Hearts} created another round of nothing but checks. The big blind turned over {Q-Hearts} {10-Clubs} with a sheepish grin.

Opponent Shows Mercier No Mercy

Isabelle Mercier has defied the trend so far today of women players having tough afternoons. Mercier is currently sitting behind about 15,000, but just gave some of those chips back in a heads-up pot. She was the preflop aggressor, putting in a raise to 450 chips. One player called that raise, then called another bet of 650 on the flop of {3-Hearts} {6-Clubs} {j-Clubs}. Mercier slowed down when the turn came {A-Clubs}, checking the action. Her opponent checked it right back, bringing the two players to the river. That card fell {Q-Hearts}. Mercier seemed to consider betting but thought better of it and checked. She then folded to a bet of 1,300.

Minieri Shrinks

On the last hand before the break, Dario Minieri dropped a few chips.

He bet 1,000 on the {Q-Hearts} {6-Clubs} {6-Diamonds} flop, and a gent who had checked to him in early position raised to around 3,000. Call.

The early-position gentleman checked the {A-Spades} turn as well, and then called a 2,100 bet from Minieri. Both players checked the {K-Spades} river, and Minieri's opponent turned over {A-Clubs} {J-Diamonds}. Minieri smacked his hand on the table before mucking and telling his opponent, "Nice hand." Down to 7,100, off went the diminutive Italian to his break.
