Salhani Leads a Star Studded Day 1b in Deauville

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante
EPT Deauville.
EPT Deauville.

The second first day of the 2012 PokerStars.fr EPT Deauville Main Event was a more robust version of its predecessor one day earlier.

Not only did it feature a cast of 550 players, blowing away the 339 total from Day 1a, but it also included some of the biggest stars in the game today.

1998 WSOP Main Event champ Scotty Nguyen turned up, as did last year's winner Lucien Cohen and a host of Team PokerStars Pros, including Viktor "Isildur1" Blom, Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier, Liv Boeree, Vanessa Rousso, Eugene Katchalov and more.

But as the masses fell by the wayside, leaving approximately 325 survivors, the day truly belonged to Frenchman Amir Salhani, who grabbed the top spot late and held onto it, heading into Thursday's Day 2 with 191,100 in chips and what appears to be the overall chip lead.

Once registration closed and the final numbers were revealed, the news came down that a total of 889 players had registered for this incarnation of EPT Deauville, just two less than the record 891 who came to play last year and clearly proving poker is alive and well in France.

The grand total of 889 Players helped create what amounts to a €4,267,200 prizepool that will pay 128 spots with €875,000 reserved for first, just €5k less than Cohen's take from 2011.

Speaking of Cohen, he managed bust in the final 15 minutes of the day, ensuring we will have a new champion this time around.

Those who also failed to push through joining Cohen on the rail, included Blom, Katchalov, Vanessa Selbst, Dario Minieri, Fabrice Soulier, and Jude Ainsworth.

But several notables will go on to Day 2, including Rousso, Shannon Shorr, Ari Engel, Nacho Barbero, Ludovic Lacay and Team PokerStars SportsStar and Olympic Gold Medalist Fatima Moreira de Melo.

Adding the Day 1b survivors to the 221 through from Day 1a means we will see an approximate total of 546 begin play at 12 p.m. local time in Deauville Thursday.

To follow all the action live, as it happens, tune into PokerNews' Live Updates as our team will be here throughout the day, briniging you all the news you need to know and more.

Until then, we bid you adieu from Deauville.

Kroll Nears 150k

The player under the gun opened to 1,300 and Raphael Kroll called from the next seat. The big blind called as well and the flop came down {10-Clubs}{6-Spades}{2-Hearts}.

It was checked to the raiser who bet 2,525, receiving a call from only Kroll. Both checked the {J-Diamonds} turn, landing the {J-Hearts} river. The raiser bet 5,750, sending Kroll into the tank for about two minutes before he called with {9-Hearts}{9-Clubs}, good enough to take down the pot.

There Will Be a New Champ

Rats!
Rats!

2011 EPT Deauville winner Lucien Cohen will not successfully defend his title this year.

He flopped a pair of sevens and got the rest of his meager stack in against an opponent who'd flopped a pair of kings.

A third king on the turn ended Cohen's run for good.

Not So Lacay

After the under-the-gun player raised to 1,600 and the next player to act called, a third player shoved for 5,450 on the button. Ludovic Lacay re-raised to 11,000 from the big blind and pushed the others out.

Lacay tabled {Q-Spades}{Q-Clubs}, but ran into {A-Hearts}{A-Diamonds}. The board ran out {K-Diamonds}{J-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{K-Clubs}, knocking Lacay down to about 68,000.
