Day 1 Completed

Mike Watson Leads €25,000 High Roller After Day 1

Level 10 : 800/1,600, 1,600 ante
Mike Watson

There were a total of 132 entrants in the PokerStars and Monte-Carlo®Casino European Poker Tour €25,000 High Roller, an increase of 20 players from the same stage last year. Several big names and High Roller champions from PokerStars Live events were out in force but by the end of ten levels, it was Canadian Mike Watson who leads the way.

In fact, it was almost a Canadian one-two with Luc Greenwood (301,500) third in chips, but for Russian architect Vasily Klyukhin (302,500) who snuck into second. David Dayan is the only player over 300,000, with 56 advancing to Day 2.

Among them is last week's Super High Roller champion Sergio Aido (220,000), EPT Monte Carlo €10,000 High Roller champion Sylvain Loosli (63,000), WSOP Europe Main Event champion Jack Sinclair (96,500), along with last year's runner-up Shyngis Satubayev (46,000), and fifth-place finisher Joao Vieira (247,500).

Other notables advancing include Koray Aldemir (190,000), Rainer Kempe (175,500), Erik Seidel (147,500), Sean Winter (129,500), Nick Petrangelo (99,000), Steve O'Dwyer (98,000), Mikita Badziakouski (82,500) and Maria Ho (63,000).

Day Recap

Charlie Carrel was among the early entrants, looking for another final table of the festival. He was joined by PokerStars Team Pro Andre Akkari, Kazuhiko Yotsushika and Bryn Kenney among others.

Several players today made use of their single re-entry, but failed to bag, including Alex Foxen, Michael Soyza, Ben Heath, David Peters and Sam Higgs. Defending champion Albert Daher also appeared in the field, but failed to make it through to Day 2.

Ivan Leow was fresh off a third-place finish in the €5,200 PLO High Roller, and appeared at the top of the chip counts midway through the day, along with Aido, Alexander Uskov and Joao Simao, before Watson started his ascent, at the expense of Leow.

With 56 players advancing to Day 2, and registration open until the start of play for any new players or those re-entering, the €25,000 High Roller looks certain to be another exciting event, bringing EPT Monte Carlo to a close in two day's time. Day 2 gets underway in the Americas room at 12:30pm.

Level 10 : 800/1,600, 1,600 ante

Bujtas Wins a Flip Against Bartoletti

Level 10 : 800/1,600, 1,600 ante

The action folded to Laszlo Bujtas on the button who made it 3,500 to go. Ivo Bartoletti three-bet to 8,500 from the big blind and Bujtas four-bet shoved all in for around 50,000. Bartoletti quickly called and the cards were on their backs.

Laszlo Bujtas: {8-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}
Ivo Bartoletti: {a-Spades}{k-Clubs}

The flop came {q-Clubs}{10-Spades}{9-Hearts} and Bartoletti picked up a straight draw to go with his two overcards. However, the {7-Spades} and {3-Diamonds} bricked off and Bujtas found a double up.

Salter Doubles Through Derwiche

Level 10 : 800/1,600, 1,600 ante

"I have shit," said Imad Derwiche matter-of-factly. He had opened to 4,500 and Jack Salter had three-bet all in for 19,400.

"You can have ace-jack, ace-queen," he continued.

"What about ace-ace?" asked Salter. Derwiche called.

Jack Salter: {10-Diamonds}{10-Spades}
Imad Derwiche: {6-Clubs}{9-Clubs}

"You win," said Derwiche.

"Not yet," replied Salter, and he was made to worry on the {j-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}{6-Spades} flop which gave Derwiche a pair. However, that was the extent of the scare as the {a-Diamonds}{4-Hearts} runout secured his double up.

Juan Pardo
Juan Pardo

Ivo Bartoletti opened to 5,200 and Juan Pardo three-bet all in for 29,600. Mikita Badziakouski then moved all in for 16,700 and Bartoletti called, putting both opponents at risk.

"Ace-king, ace-king," said Badziakouski showing {j-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}, but Bartoletti showed {k-Clubs}{k-Hearts} and Pardo {7-Hearts}{7-Spades}

"Lucky jack!" said Badziakouski, and the flop came {q-Clubs}{j-Spades}{8-Clubs} giving him a set. The turn and river kept Badziakouski ahead, eliminating Pardo.

Watson and Davies Scoop Pots

Level 10 : 800/1,600, 1,600 ante

Mike Watson raised to 3,600 in the hijack and Ivan Leow re-raised to 12,800 on the button. The blinds folded and Watson called to go heads-up to a flop of {k-Spades}{9-Hearts}{8-Spades}. Watson checked to Leow who continued with a bet of 11,000. Watson check-raised to 32,000 and Leow quickly folded.

At the table next door, Seth Davies opened to 3,500 in the hijack and was called by Joao Simao in the cutoff, David Dayan in the small blind and Davidi Kitai in the big blind. The flop fell {a-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{2-Spades} and the action checked to Simao who bet 7,000 and was called by only Davies.

The turn brought the {8-Spades} and both players checked to the {3-Clubs} on the board. Davies led out for a bet of 26,000 as his time expired and Simao quickly mucked his cards.

Akkari Afraid of the Diamonds

Level 10 : 800/1,600, 1,600 ante

Orpen Kisacikoglu opened to 3,300 from under the gun and was called by Isaac Haxton in the cutoff, the button, and Andre Akkari in the big blind. The flop fell {a-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} and all four players checked to the {4-Hearts} on the turn.

Akkari led out for 5,300 which got Kisacikoglu to fold. Haxton, however, raised to 18,000 and the button folded. Akkari called and the {2-Diamonds} completed the board. Akkari checked and Haxton checked as well as his time was running out. Akkari turned over {8-Clubs}{7-Hearts} for a straight and Haxton mucked his cards.
