The PokerStars European Poker Tour (EPT) Barcelona Main Event got underway on Sunday inside Casino Barcelona and drew 715 players in the first of two starting flights. Leading the 221 remaining players at the end of Day 1A is Japan's Daiki Shingae with a stack of 444,000 as he looks to add to his $138,834 in Hendon Mob earnings.

Also among the big stacks in the €5,300 buy-in Main Event are France's Marc Bougaret (339,000) and Julien Sitbon (224,000), as well as Italy's Demis Mariani (309,500) and Spanish local Alejandro Ganivet (238,700).

American grinder Rania Nasreddine made two EPT Main Event final tables last year, including in Barcelona, and Nasreddine will look to continue that hot streak after bagging two starting stacks.

Others who bagged the first starting flight include American pros Brock Wilson, Kasey Lyn Mills, and Adam Hendrix, German grinder Jessica Vierling, online end boss Niklas Astedt, and Eugene Katchalov, an old school pro who made his return to poker last year.

Day 1A Action

Just as the weather warmed up after a few cloudy days in Barcelona, the action picked up quickly in the Main Event with several coolers, suckouts and big hands fit for a cash game bad beat jackpot promotion.

Perhaps the biggest hand of the day goes to Joaquin Duran, who got it in with pocket aces against the queens of Leonardo Pfeiff before improving to quads for an emphatic double.

Duran was hungry like a wolf, but wasn't the only player to hit quads on Day 1A. Not long after, Nicola Danselmo open-jammed with pocket tens and got action from Romain Le Dantec, who never stood a chance as the dealer fanned two tens on the flop.

On the suckout side of things, Andreas Goeller spiked a three-outer to score a double knockout of Cesar Del Pino and 2023 EPT Barcelona champion Simon Wiciak. A more recent champion, 2024 winner Stephen Song, was also eliminated on Day 1A.

Also eliminated during Day 1A were former Spanish pro footballer Gerard Pique, Leo Margets, PokerStars Ambassadors Kenny Hallaert and Maria Konnikova and EPT champions Davidi Kitai, Uri Gilboa and Pedro Marques.

Monday, Aug. 25, will see the second and final starting flight of the EPT Barcelona Main Event, which will follow the same structure as Day 1A with ten one-hour levels and a 75-minute dinner break after Level 6.

Stay tuned as the PokerNews live reporting team is on-site here at Casino Barcelona and will be back tomorrow for continued coverage of the EPT Barcelona Main Event.

Niklas Astedt
Niklas Astedt

Niklas Astedt raised to 2,400 from middle position. The small blind shoved all-in for 13,000, then Giuseppe Zarbo in the big blind four-bet to 23,600. Astedt went into the tank, asked Zarbo how much he had left and pushed his stack forward. Zarbo snap-folded.

Small Blind: 1010 All in
Niklas Astedt: AA

Astedt found aces, leaving no chance to his opponent who was eliminated on 475Q4. "You can have a beer if you want," Astedt kindly offered as a waitress was bringing beers to the table.

Samuel Ju opened to 3,000 in middle position and Demis Mariani called in the cutoff before Mauricio Salazar Sanchez three-bet to 11,500 in the small blind. Ju four-bet jammed a stack of around 25,000, and Mariani folded before Salazar Sanchez called with slightly less.

The board ran out J4328, and Salazar Sanchez groaned after missing his flush draw and overs as he was sent to the rail.

Defending Champion Falls in Double Knockout

Level 8 : Blinds 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Simon Wiciak
Simon Wiciak

There was a three-way all in at Table 15 involving 2023 champion Simon Wiciak, Cesar Del Pino and Andreas Goeller, who had both opponents covered.

Simon Wiciak: AQ All in
Cesar Del Pino: AK
Andreas Goeller: KJ

The flop of 3310 missed everyone, but the 3 turn gave Wiciak some hope with a flush draw. However, the river brought the offsuit J to stun Wiciak and Del Pino as Goeller scored a double knockout.

"It was a nice jack on the river," said Niklas Astedt, who revealed he also held ace-queen.

Yidi Ni raised to 1,800 from early position. He was called by William Fasano to his left before Thomas Rauhe in the small blind decided to go all in for 16,100. Peter Jorgne called from the big blind. Ni called as well, while Fasano folded.

The dealer fanned a flop of 26Q and Jorgne bet 12,500. Ni called, but folded when Jorgne fired a second barrel of 16,000 on the K turn.

Kin Hang Man opened to 1,200 in early position, and Joaquin Duran three-bet jammed a stack of 8,000 from the next seat before Leonardo Pfeiff called on the button. Man folded.

Leonardo Pfeiff: QQ

Duran was far in front and improved to a set on the flop of 84A. The runout of 3A was overkill as Albarran made quads for an emphatic double up in one of the first hands back from dinner break.

Simon Wiciak in the hijack opened to 600. He was called by Davidi Kitai to his left and by former football player Gerard Piqué in the big blind.

Both Piqué and Wiciak checked the 3JA flop, but Kitai bet 900. Wiciak was the only one to call.

The 2023 EPT Barcelona champion then checked the 4 turn and folded to a bet of 2,700 from Kitai.

Summer Reunion in Day 1A

Level 3 : Blinds 100/300, 300 ante
Kenny Hallaert
Kenny Hallaert

Three poker players who had career-defining runs earlier this summer in Las Vegas are back at it, now searching for an EPT Main Event title.

Leo Margets made history this summer as she became the first woman of poker's modern era to final table the WSOP Main Event, ultimately finishing in seventh place for $1.5 million. Margets is now building a stack in Day 1A, while the player who eliminated her, Kenny Hallaert, is doing the same after a deep run in the PokerStars Open Barcelona Main Event.

Meanwhile, fellow Main Event final tablist Adam Hendrix is also in the Day 1A field with double starting stack.

Three-way on a flop of 108J, Gonzalo Gottlieb bet 1,800. He made the small blind fold, but last year's finalist Rania Nasreddine check-called from the big blind.

Gottlieb fired a second barrel of 3,500 on the 3 turn. Nasreddine check-called again, then led out for 8,800 on the 6 river.

Gottlieb eventually called with QQ and caught Nasreddine bluffing with K9.

Heads-up on a board of 454K10 with roughly 18,000 in the pot, Marc Bougaret in the cutoff bet 12,000 and Leo Soma in the big blind went deep into the tank.

After a few minutes, another player at the table eventually called the clock on Soma who quickly grabbed some chips to call. However he couldn't do much against Bougaret's flush with A5 and lost the pot.
