Anton Kraous Leads Day 1b; Steve O'Dwyer Among Big Stacks

Level 10 : Blinds 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Anton Kraous

After a strong start with 715 entries on Day 1a, the €5,300 Main Event of the 2025 PokerStars European Poker Tour (EPT) Barcelona continued on solid ground this Monday at Casino Barcelona.

By the end of the day, 1,213 runners had entered on Day 1b, slightly more than last year’s second flight (1,194). This brings the provisional total to 1,928 entries, with more contenders expected to join the field as late registration remains open until the start of Day 2. Only 47 additional entries are needed to surpass the 2024 total (1,975), while just 25 more would push the 2025 edition past the 2,000-entry milestone.

Daiki Shingae led Day 1a with 444,000 and found no equal on Day 1b as Anton Kraous finished as the second flight’s chip leader with (only) 330,000. Among the hands that propelled him to the top, Kraous eliminated Ivo Bartoletti with a flopped straight during the late levels of the day. That hand may have been the difference, as Kraous holds a narrow lead over Jerry Odeen (302,500) and recent PokerStars Open finalist Jakub Sterba (291,000).

Other notables in the Top 10 include Cesar Garcia (277,500), Olivier Fazio (276,000), and EPT champion Steve O’Dwyer (266,000). In total, 424 players advanced to Day 2.

Just like O’Dwyer, five former EPT Main Event champions found a bag at the end of Day 1b, starting with the defending champion Stephen Song, who will return with 88,000 chips in his chase for a back-to-back win. The 2023 winner Simon Wiciak finished with a nearly identical stack of 85,000 after sharing the table with Mark Teltscher (48,500) all day long. Meanwhile, Sebastian Malec (76,000) and Dominik Panka (44,000) will return with shorter stacks.

PokerStars Team ambassador Kenny Hallaert (81,000) also bagged chips, as did teammates Alejandro Lococo (73,500), and Marle Spragg (46,500), who re-entered after busting before the dinner break. Benjamin Spragg will also be in action on Day 2, but with just 11,000 chips, he’ll need to take risks early to rebuild his stack.

Among the other players who advanced to Day 2, David Taieb (231,000) and Timo Kamphues (196,500) built some of the bigger stacks. Lorenzo Arduini survived a fortunate three-way all-in to finish with 131,000 and finds himself surrounded by players like Omar Lakhdari (140,000), Leo Worthington-Leese (132,500), and Jorge Ufano (129,000).

Ramon Colillas (116,000) also made his way to Day 2,slightly ahead of French streamer Julien “Jbzz” Dupré (112,000), who spent the final levels with Martin Kabrhel (51,000) on his right. All of them finished above the starting stack, unlike Kalidou Sow (30,000), Boris Angelov (28,500), and the €100,000 EPT Super High Roller champion Leon Sturm (22,500), who will return short-stacked.

Day 2 is set to resume this Tuesday, August 26, at 12 p.m. local time. Four 90-minute levels are scheduled, with 20-minute breaks at the end of each level. This should bring the field closer to the money, although the bubble might not burst during Day 2. The official payouts and confirmed prize pool will be announced once late registration closes at the start of the day.

Stay tuned as PokerNews keeps providing you updates until a winner is crowned!

Sterba Shoots Up the Leaderboard by Taking Out Ozdemir

Level 10 : Blinds 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Jakub Sterba
Jakub Sterba

Danilo Cangianiello three-bet to 7,500 in middle position and Tarik Ozdemir called in the hijack. Action folded back to Jakub Sterba who four-bet to 20,000, and Cangianiello got out of the way. Ozdemir, though, announced he was all in for 61,000 by placing his gold, big-earred cartoon character card protector in the middle.

Sterba asked for a count and tanked for several minutes, but he eventually called to put Ozdemir at risk.

Tarik Ozdemir: AQ All in
Jakub Sterba: QQ

Sterba was ahead with his queens while Ozdemir was looking for an ace to stay alive. The 1074 flop was safe for Sterba, while the turn was the K. Ozdemir picked up a straight draw going to the river, but he missed the 3 as Sterba slammed the table in celebration after scoring the knockout.

Just Quads For Hadioglu

Level 10 : Blinds 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Nuri Hadioglu
Nuri Hadioglu

Ibrahim Senoussi three-bet to 8,000 on the button as action went on Nuri Hadioglu in the big blind who four-bet to 25,000. The action folded back to Senoussi who shoved all in, and Hadioglu snap-called for 63,000.

Nuri Hadioglu: KK All in
Ibrahim Senoussi: 1010

Hadioglu had woken up with kings and improved to a set on the AQK flop, while Senoussi picked up a straight draw. That small glimmer of hope Senoussi had completely evaporated after the K fell on the turn to give Hadioglu quads.

"I think that's going to win," tablemate Tony Dunst observed. The river was the Q and Hadioglu doubled up.

Valls Slows Garcia's Quest For Another Day 1 Chip Lead

Level 9 : Blinds 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Cesar Garcia
Cesar Garcia

Cesar Garcia, who was the chip leader after Day 1b of EPT Monte Carlo earlier this year, was challenging to do it again as he built up a stack of nearly 300,000 before tangling in a pot with Josep Valls.

Kayhan Mokri opened to 2,500 under the gun and Garcia three-bet to 6,500 in the hijack. Valls then four-bet to 19,500 in the cutoff, Mokri folded, while Garcia called.

The flop came K38 and Valls bet 6,600. Garcia called once more to see the 4 turn, where Valls bet another 13,500. Garcia folded this time and took a slight hit to his big stack.

Neilson Rides the Roller Coaster to the Rail

Level 9 : Blinds 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Daniel Neilson
Daniel Neilson

Daniel Neilson was standing up and leaving his seat, with the rest of his chips heading over to Ricardo Capela.

Neilson was under the gun and had all of his stack of around 25,000 in preflop against Capela, who was in the cutoff.

Daniel Neilson: QQ All in
Ricardo Capela: KK

It wasn't the best of situations for Neilson, and nothing changed on the J103 flop. However, things did turn in his favor when the Q improved him to a set with one card to come.

Capela did pick up an open-ended straight draw to go along with his set outs, and that draw came in when the 9 landed on the river, which meant Neilson was eliminated and won't be returning as his two bullets have been used up.

Joao Leao

Joao Leao raised to 2,400 in the cutoff, Aiguo Xu three-bet to 8,500 on the button, and Leao called.

The flop came 862 and Xu continued for 9,000. Leao called and they both checked the 4 turn.

Leao then led out for 18,000 on the 3 river and Xu snap-called. Leao showed JJ and Xu mucked.

Espen Jorstad and Darius Neagoe were recently eliminated at this table, while Matin Talebi is up to nearly 140,000.

Lorenzo Arduini

A three-way all-in and call situation occurred involving Roman Stoica in the big blind 18,600, Brian Green in middle position with 61,100 and Lorenzo Arduini in the hijack who had them covered.

"This one worth a lot of money," Arduini said before the dealer revealed a board of 95252 which kept him in the lead, eliminating both of his opponents.

Kraous Flops the Joint, Bartoletti Calls Off on the River

Level 8 : Blinds 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Anton Kraous
Anton Kraous

Anton Kraous led out for 3,000 on a flop of 965 and Andres Korn called in the big blind. Ivo Bartoletti then raised to 8,000 in the cutoff, and both opponents called.

Kraous bet another 12,000 on the 4 turn, and this time Korn got out of the way. Bartoletti, though, called to see the K river. Kraous then pushed forward a stack of his blue 5,000 chips, enough to put Bartoletti all in.

Bartoletti didn't take long before calling for around 25,000. Kraous then showed 87 for a flopped straight, and Bartoletti threw his cards into the muck and got up from the table. Because he was all in, the dealer retrieved his cards and turned over Q9 before sliding the big pot to the EPT Cyprus finalist.

Lai Shoves Into D'Ippolito's Boat

Level 8 : Blinds 500/1,000, 1,000 ante

Jun Lai raised to 2,500 under the gun and Marco D'Ippolito called in early position.

The flop came 788 and Lai bet 3,800. D'Ippolito called and the Q fell on the turn.

Lai checked and D'Ippolito bet 4,600. Lai then raised to 11,500, and D'Ippolito called.

The river was the J and Lai moved all in for around 30,000. D'Ippolito snap-called and turned over QQ for a full house, while Lai could only show 109 for a no-good straight as he headed to the rail.

With that pot, D'Ippolito moved up to almost 200,000. David Coleman, coming off a runner-up finish in the Super High Roller, is also at this table, as is Santhosh Suvarna.

"Welcome to Barcelona!"

Level 8 : Blinds 500/1,000, 1,000 ante

The tournament room had been filled with nothing more than the clattering of chips and some small, friendly table banter for most of the day...until Martin Kabrhel showed up to liven things up.

On one of his first hands, Kabrhel and Gustavo Morales built a pot of 17,500 as they went to a flop of KJ10. Morales bet 4,000 from the button and Kabrhel min-raised to 8,000 under the gun. Morales then moved all in.

"You have ace-queen of spades? I'll take the chance," Kabrhel said, before calling for his last 22,500.

Martin Kabrhel: AQ All in
Gustavo Morales: KK

"Small casino royale," Kabrhel said as he turned over the nut straight against Morales' top set. Morales needed to fill up to send Kabrhel to the rail, but Kabrhel dodged the 8 turn and 5 river to earn the double up.

"Welcome to Barcelona! Welcome to EPT Barcelona!" Kabrhel shouted out as someone from across the room yelled back, "Not like that!"

"Second place is not bad. Easy table. You didn't tell me this was such an easy table," Kabrhel added.
