Day 1a Completed

End of Day 1a Commentary

After one long day of poker, PokerNews had a chance to interview some of the players who we will see back at Casino Hohensyburg on Thursday. PokerStars Pro Katja Thater yet again proved her talents by surviving the last three hours on the toughest table in the room – the infamous table 7. Thater had a great start at the beginning of the day, but then lost a big pot to go down to 7,000. Staying at that level for a couple of hours, she eventually came back up to 19,500 by winning a few, late hands during the final hour. “It really has been a long day with a lot of media before the start today, but I would never complain. I love this and it is really nice to play on home turf,” says the elegant Thater to PokerNews.

Sweden’s Mats Iremark had been the main attraction on the same table by going from 52,000, down to 8,000, and then back up to 48,000 by the final hand of the day. “I like to play a lot of hands, so then you need to be prepared for a roller-coaster ride. I was steaming after losing a couple of big pots, but I got my act together and came back up. I was also very lucky a couple of times, but that is all part of this game, right?" commented Iremark on his way back to the hotel.

T6 poker has a lot of players in this tournament and two of their pros, Marek Kolk from Estonia and Swede Mats Rahmn, will be back on Thursday. “Fifteen minutes before the end of the day, a player at my table decided to donate his chip stack to me. I had been playing tight and called a preflop raise from the big blind holding {K-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}. The flop came {Q-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}, I check-raised with top pair and my opponent went all in with his last 16,000, holding {7-Clubs}{7-Hearts}. It was a nice gift and I will be back on Thursday with 38,000," says Kolk.

Mats Rahmn was really short-stacked with two hours to go, but played bravely to end the day with 20,000. “When I was down to 4,000 I went all in a bunch of times and never got called. I stole my way back to 10,000 and then doubled up with half an hour to go. I’m looking forward to Thursday since this is the first time I have made it through to Day 2 in an EPT tournament,” says Rahmn.

Day 1a is Over

After eight levels of play, Day 1a ended at 2:00 AM at Casino Hohensyburg in Dortmund. 74 players survived the day and they will all be back on Thursday for Day 2. Cyrille Chabot from France is the chip leader with 101,000. All the updates and chip counts will be posted on Wednesday around lunch. Good night from Dortmund. We will be back tomorrow with Day 1b, starting at 3:00 PM, local time.

Rahmn Struggling to Survive

With a very short stack, T6 poker pro Mats Rahmn from Sweden went all in numerous times and managed to come back from 4,000 to 10,000 during level 7.

"I'm not sure if I will survive the last level, but if I do this will be my first time making it to Day 2," says Rahmn with a smile.

The Swede is well-known in Europe and is one of three Swedish WSOP bracelet winners. He won his bracelet in 2006.

Nawab Wins 55k Pot

Maz Nawab
Maz Nawab
Late in level 7, Maz Nawab from the UK made a raise with {9-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}, and fellow countryman Steve Jelinek called holding {A-Hearts}{Q-Hearts}. The flop came {10-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{2-Hearts} and Jelinek checked. Nawab bet 3,500, Jelinek raised to 8,500, and Nawab went all in for 22,000. After a moment of thought, Jelinek called with the flush draw. No hearts came on the turn or river, and Nawab is now up among the chip leaders after raking the 55,000 pot. Jelinek dropped down to 18,000 and is still in decent shape.

93 Players Left

198 players started the day, and with one hour to go there are now 93 players left on Day 1a of the PokerStars EPT German Open. The average stack is 21,290 and the blinds are up to 200/400 with a 50 ante.

Ruthenberg Eliminated

PokerStars pro Sebastian Ruthenberg was still on his starting stack when all his money went in on the flop of {Q-Spades}{5-Spades}{3-Hearts}. He had the nut-flush draw holding {A-Spades}{K-Spades}, but was behind to his opponent's set, {3-Clubs}{3-Spades}. When the {5-Clubs} came on the turn, Ruthenberg was drawing dead and already standing up. The {3-Diamonds} on the river, giving his opponent four of a kind, only added insult to injury.

Helppi Doubles Up

Juha Helppi
Juha Helppi
Finnish poker pro Juha Helppi was down to a mere 4,000 when he managed to double up. On a {K-Clubs}{8-Spades}{5-Hearts} flop, he went all in holding {K-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}, which was better than his opponent's {K-Spades}{10-Hearts}. Helppi is still short, but one of the strongest players left on Day 1a. The blinds have now gone up to 200/400 with an ante of 50 and we are now on level 7.
