Davenport Among Chip Leaders After GUKPT Coventry Main Event Day 1a

Level 10 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Matthew Davenport
Matthew Davenport

The first flight of the GUKPT Coventry Main Event is in the books with 26 players advancing from a field of exactly 100. Plenty of players took it upon themselves to jump straight in at the first opportunity, including Grosvenor Poker Team Pro Jamie Nixon.

Unfortunately for Nixon, he was eliminated before the end of play but will have ample opportunity to secure his spot in Day 2 with two more flights on Friday, March 4 here at the Grosvenor Casino Coventry.

The chip leader is Mitchell Hynam who bagged 169,700 ahead of anonymous player G D with 154,100. Matthew Davenport sits in third in chips and is the only other player above 150,000, after bagging 152,600. Other players who bagged above 100,000 chips include Lee French (141,000), Dawid Chmiel (120,500) and Leon Campbell (108,000).

They will return for Day 2 at midday on Saturday, March 5. Meanwhile PokerNews will return on Friday for two more flights in the GUKPT Coventry Main Event.

Wendy, Meet the 'Mad Turk'

"What's your name?" Yucel Eminoglu asked Wendy Watson. "They call me the Turk."

On the very next hand, John Bousfield opened and Wendy Watson called in the small blind.

"I'm going to raise because I haven't played a pot with this guy in a long time," said Eminoglu in the big blind. "I play big pots against good players and small pots against bad players." He raised to 5,200. Bousfield folded but Watson called.

"You call!" said Eminoglu. "I guess that makes you a good player."

The flop came {9-Spades}{a-Clubs}{k-Diamonds} and Watson immediately bet out 5,000 and Eminoglu looked stunned.

"Sorry!" she said. "Do what you like," she said to Eminoglu.

"Bloody hell Wendy!" said Eminoglu, who folded. Watson showed {k-Spades}{q-Spades} and took down the pot.

Davenport Soaring After Liperis Elimination

Level 7 : 200/500, 500 ante

Yiannis Liperis had opened and Mitchell Hynam had three-bet to 3,300. Matthew Davenport flat-called and Liperis four-bet all in for 22,000. Hynam folded and Davenport quickly called.

Yiannis Liperis: {a-Spades}{k-Spades}
Matthew Davenport: {k-Clubs}{k-Hearts}

The {8-Hearts}{8-Spades}{5-Spades} flop gave Liperis a flush draw, but the {9-Hearts}{8-Clubs} runout bricked and Davenport's full house sent his opponent to the rail.

Jones Reads Watsons Hand to Perfection

Level 5 : 200/300, 300 ante

Five players saw a flop of {a-Spades}{10-Spades}{9-Hearts} and it checked to Wendy Watson who bet 1,500. She got three callers including Donald Jones, who was first to act on the {q-Spades} turn. He checked and Watson bet 5,000.

The two other players folded and action was back on Jones.

"Big bet," he mused. "I don't think I'm able to fold a flush draw here. Did you flop a pair and a flush draw?"

He continued to mull it over before eventually folding.

"Show me how big," he said, with Watson turning over {9-Spades}{8-Spades} for a flush, having flopped a pair and a flush draw.

Nixon: "Numbers Have Been Really Good on Tour"

Level 4 : 100/300, 300 ante
Jamie Nixon
Jamie Nixon

We caught up with Grosvenor Poker Team Pro Jamie Nixon on break who said that with the GUKPT's return, it's been nice to swap a computer chair for a seat at the live felt.

"It's just weird not being sat in front of the computer," he told PokerNews. "The tour's been back 9-10 months now and it's good to see familiar faces instead of familiar screen names.

"It's also nice just to have chips back in your hands! Numbers have been really good on the last couple of stops, so I think everything's getting back to normal."

Grosvenor Poker Team Pro Jamie Nixon had a successful trip out in London at the last leg on the GUKPT, cashing in both the Mini Main Event and narrowly missing out on making the High Roller final table, finishing in 11th place.

He's just taken his seat on Day 1a of the GUKPT Coventry Main Event, and will be looking to improve on his 45th place finish in the same event last year.

Three and Out for Jordon

Level 2 : 100/100, 100 ante
Terry Jordon
Terry Jordon

Zi Yuan Tang had earlier sent Terry Jordon to the rail, with Jordon's second bullet seeing him sat at the feature table.

In a hand on stream, Jordon raised to 700 with {10-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} and called a three-bet from Oliver Hutchins {k-Spades}{k-Hearts} to 1,700.

The flop came {10-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{4-Hearts} and Jordon check-called 3,200. The turn was the {q-Diamonds} giving Jordon even more outs.

Jordon checked and called a shove from Hutchins for his last 8,000.

The river was the {5-Spades} and Jordon was eliminated.

For his third bullet of the day, he was again seated at the same table as Tang. Jordan was eliminated when his {10-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} failed to outrun his opponent's {q-Diamonds}{q-Hearts} on {k-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}{5-Clubs} with the chips going in on the turn.
