“What’s small-ball?” says Shergill

Jeet Shergill likes to play big pot poker. A short while ago he was up to 180,000 and now he’s down to 125,000. By the end of the day he could be bust or on half a million.

He just raised to 15,000 (yes the BB is still 2k) from UTG and was called in one spot before a {k-Diamonds}{q-Spades}{j-Hearts} flop was dealt. He didn’t like the look of the flop though and check-folded to a bet. Good job too as his opponent opened {a-Spades}{10-Spades}.

More for Mathis

Marty Mathis is our latest player to cross the six-digit line. He raised up {k-Clubs}{k-Diamonds} from early position and got one solitary caller who obliged in calling on a {10-}{5-}{2-} flop. Mathis then checked a pairing {5-} on the turn failing to induce any action until he led for three-quarters of the pot on the river. His value bet was called and he's up to over 110,000. For those following the saga of The Curious Incident of Marty Mathis and the Maghogany Inca Statue' the only part of it left is the base (it's been broken twice). It's being used as his card protector.

Leaping Lopez

PokerStars Team Online’s Karlo Lopez is up to 80,000 after forcing Jorge Ortega off a hand on the turn. The board read {5-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds} and when Ortega led for 16,000 Lopez moved all-in. Ortega thought for a long time but folded. Lopez allowed his opponent to flip one of his cards and the {a-Hearts} was revealed.

Nice life

Jeet Shergill is having a great old time of it right now. His shirt is almost over his head as he enjoys a nice massage and his stack is now worth 180,000. News reached us that he raised to 5,000 and found one caller before a flop with two aces came down. Shergill led for around 50,000 to put his opponent all-in. His opponent said that he wouldn’t bet that much with an ace so called all-in with pocket jacks. The player was right too as Shergill didn’t have a queen but he did have pocket queens and that was more than enough for the pot and a scalp.

6-way limped pot? Really?

No, but it was close. Wilfredo Vilchez from Chile limped under the gun and picked up four limpers until David Figueroa raised to 14,000 from the big blind. Vilchez flat called leaving himself about 24,000 behind. The rest of the table passed but both Andrey Lobzhanidze and Marty Mathis had looked incredibly tempted to call.

Figueroa c-bet 15,000 into the {j-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{4-Diamonds} flop and Vilchez moved in for a little more. Figueroa tabled {a-Spades}{k-Spades} to Vilchez's {q-Clubs}{q-Hearts}. The board blanked out and Vilchez more than doubles to 80,000 while Figueroa drops to 70,000. Lobzhanidze let out a gasp as a third diamond arrived - the Russian had passed {a-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}.

Brazil's queen down by queens

Team PokerStars Brazil’s Maria "Maridu" Mayrinck has been eliminated. She never really got going today and found ace-queen to put it all-in with. Unfortunately for her a willing customer came along for the ride with pocket queens. The pair held and that was that for “Maridu”.

Mathis squeeze pays off

Marty Mathis has been picking his spots well and here he got the best of both worlds squeezing all-in with pocket fours for 25 big blinds. Of the other two players in the raised pot he managed to get the player with a bigger pair (pocket nines) to fold while he was called by ace-jack. One coin toss won later and the young American is up to 94,000. It's probably the first time he has been average chips or better since level one.

Battle to be table and tournament captain

Jacob Baumgartner has just been moved two seats to the right of Jose Barbero and between them they have almost 400,000 chips. That's quite a lot considering that the average stack is about 66,000 at the moment. Barbero opens the betting on the first hand Baumgartner is dealt into to 4,600 and is called in three spots, which includs Baumgartner. The {10-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{a-Clubs} flop is checked all the way round but when the {4-Diamonds} turn is checked to Baumgartner as the last player to act he places a 14,000 that takes the pot unopposed putting the American online qualifier up to nearly 200,000. A monster pot between these two would give either of them a terrifying chip lead.

How they doing?

The top of the overnight leader board was mixed with some familiar but a lot of unfamiliar names. It was time to see how day 2 is a panning out for some them.

Jacob Baumgartner was the overnight chip leader with around 123k and he’s had an uneventful day on his way to his current 160k in chips. His neighbor today is Eddy Salinas and he had moved from 85k to 88k so it’s slow progress but progress none-the-less for him.

Other to move in the right direction also are Danny Manriques (88k to 111k), Amer Sulaiman (85k to 95k), Jorge Ortega (84k to 87k) Luis Jaikel (83k to 166k) Abdul Mati (82k to 90k) and Cedric Lenners (80k to 91k).

Those slipping down are Stefano Vega who moved from (93k to 60k) and Valerio Valera (82k to 33k).

So all-in-all a pretty good day for those who shone yesterday. There's still a long way to go today though.
