You can lose a batlle ot two as long as you win the war

Jacob Baumgartner told PN that his day was going really well until Jose Guevara sat down to his left at this second table. It was at this point he started bleeding chips and a lot of them to Guevara. He may have lost some of those battles but Baumgartner has won the last two and mostly importantly the war.

The real damage was done when Baumgartner made a “hero call” on a {j-}{6-}{4-}{8-}{10-} board. Baumgartner had raised pre-flop and was only called by Guevara before both checked the flop. Baumgartner then checked called an 8,000 bet on the turn and a 30,000 bet on the river with {6-}{7-}. His opponent could only muster {a-}{5-}.

The final nail in the coffin saw Baumgartner raise to 6,000 from UTG with {a-}{6-} and call Guevara’s 30,000 shove with {a-}{k-}. Baumgartner binked a six, eliminated his foe and is up to 240,000.

I has aces, I has top set, ship me that quarter-of-a-million pot

Peruvian Yacin Vasquez Damian was not quite about getting 130,000 all-in with Aces preflop. Nor was he quite about flopping top set and winning the biggest pot of the day, some 260,000. With just 20 players left to fall before the money his excitement is understandable, if not a bit of a rubdown for the losing player. Big pot for the big hand.

Mathis will settle for that

Local player Carlos Watanabe has been eliminated by Marty Mathis. Watanabe open shoved for around 45,000 and Mathis followed him into the middle quickly for his stack of 52,000. All other players folded to leave it at showdown:

Watanabe: {a-Hearts}{q-Spades}
Mathis: {10-Hearts}{10-Clubs}

Before the board was dealt Mathis wished his opponent good luck. The luck was all on Matthis’ side though he flopped a ten and it was over by the turn. Mathis up to around 105,000.

Level Over

Six levels down today and 74 players remaining. The plan at the moment is to come back and play two more levels before going on a dinner break.

Barrows making a break for it

Online qualifier Ben Barrows has been sitting unobtrusively between Jose Barbero (270,000) and Jacob Baumgartner (180,000) which, given their stacks, has been a fairly reasonable strategy. Over the last couple or so he’s been building up his stack and is now on a level playing field with them on some 200,000. He seems to be playing a fairly measured game three-betting {10-Clubs}{10-Diamonds} for 20,900 from the big blind over Barbero’s 8,500 small blind raise and then checking down the {a-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{3-Spades}{8-Hearts}{9-Spades} board. There are a lot of chips on that table now and should any of those three go out before the bubble it will almost certainly mean that one of the other two have a monster stack.

Representing the fairer gender

Pamela Espinosa is still representing as the final female player left in the tournament and more than that; she’s just doubled-up to 95,000 through Jeet Shergill. She raised to 9,000 from early position and Shergill called from the big blind to go to a {q-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{8-Diamonds} flop. Shergill led out and then snap-called Espinosa’s shove. She must’ve thought she was behind when she opened her {9-Clubs}{9-Hearts} but she was good as Shergill tabled {k-Hearts}{8-Spades}. The turn and river blanked and Espinosa clapped her hands excitedly. Shergill’s roller-coaster ride continues, dipping at the moment to 75,000.

Cool Culebras

David Figueroa has been inceredibly active in pots and it left Spaniard Joaquin Culebras in a tough spot on the river of a {k-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{9-Hearts} board with {k-Spades}{2-Spades}. Figueroa had fired all three streets and Culebras held on just long enough to scoop in the 70,000 pot. Kudos to Culebras for calling the final 20k on the river.

Punished for slow-rolling?

A four way limped pot brought about a {9-Spades}{a-Clubs}{10-Diamonds} flop. The action checked to Julio de la Rosa who bet 12,000. Both blind folded but Andres Pujazon moved all-in for 52,300. De la Rosa thought for a while and asked lots of questions to his opponent and the dealer about how much more it was and then made the call with {a-Spades}{9-Clubs} for two-pair. “Oh my god, what a slow-roll” commented Jose Barbero.

Pujazon tabled {k-Diamonds}{k-Hearts} and looked very unhappy at the situation. He was soon to be happy though as the board ran out {k-Clubs}{9-Hearts} to send the pot Pujazon's way with a bigger full-house. A couple of players tapped the table and said “Nice hand”. De la Rosa still okay on 150,000.

Conrad wins a big flip

Chris Conrad has got his chips in ahead in a couple of large pots these last two days and lost so it was more than half expected that his pocket tens wouldn't hold against king-queen suited. Jeet Shergill opened for 9,000 and Conrad shoved for 53,000. The move squeezed out a player behind who held ace-queen, which would have won, while Shergill was left to make the call. Conrad is up to 111,000.
