Shark Infested Waters

Action folded to Humberto Brenes on the button and he flamboyantly announced that he was going to raise, making it 600 to go. The small blind was quick to fold but an elderly gentleman in the big blind wasn't so easy to give it up. Instead, he decided to chastise "The Shark" by putting in a reraise to 2,000.

The pair laughed as they bantered back and forth before Brenes flashed the {A-Hearts}. The big blind chuckled as he flashed an ace of his own, the {A-Spades}. Brenes must have known he had met his match as he showed his other card, a {6-}, and tossed mucked. The big blind was gracious enough to show his other card too, the {Q-Spades}! Brenes is sitting with about 21,000.

Habernig Takes a Small Hit

We caught the action on the river with a board reading {K-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{4-Diamonds} and about 4,500 in the pot. Matthias Habernig was in the big blind and checked to his sole opponent on the button, who fired out a bet of 4,000. Habernig briefly went into the tank before making the call. The button showed {K-Spades}{J-Spades} for a pair of kings, which was good enough to take down the pot as Habernig slid his cards into the muck. Habernig is still in great shape with around 55,000.

Gomes Gets Agressive Preflop

The player in the hijack seat raised to 550, and the cutoff called. With action on him on the button, Alexandre Gomes three-bet to 1,900. The big blind flatted, and after the hijack player folded, the cutoff paid to join the party.

The flop fell {a-Hearts}{q-Hearts}{2-Hearts}, and action checked to Gomes. He bet, and only the big blind called. The big blind checked again after the {5-Hearts} turn. Gomes gave up with four hearts on the board, checking behind. The {6-Hearts} put a fifth heart out there, and both players checked their flushes. The big blind turned over {j-Hearts}{j-Spades} for the second-nut flush. Gomes mucked, but his opponent insisted that the dealer table his hand. Gomes could only show {k-Spades}{6-Diamonds}. He fell to 11,500 and dropped a little credibility in the process.

Don't Mess With Dabul

Veronica Dabul made a small raise preflop from middle position and received a call from the player in the big blind. The flop came down {8-Hearts}{9-Spades}{Q-Spades} and both players checked. The big blind checked the {3-Hearts} on the turn and Dabul took the opportunity to bet 700, prompting her opponent to fold.

Meanwhile, Dabul was joined by a short-stacked Victor Ramdin, who was attemtping to elicit last longer bets at 10-1 odds with his diminished stack of 3,000.

No Bad Beat (Stories) for Mayrinck

Maria Mayrinck sets the record straight.
Maria Mayrinck sets the record straight.

Maria Mayrinck was down to 18,000 from a peak of 24,000 when we last checked in with her at her table. She told us she and Terrence Chan got involved in some blind-on-blind violence. He flopped a set with pocket sevens, and her {a-}{10-} hit top pair. Needless to say, some of her stack moved to the right to sit in front of Chan.

He teased her about telling us the bad beat story. "I'd never tell a bad beat story," she defended. "Never in my life!"

At Chan's request, we've now entered Mayrinck's declaration into the official record.

Big Slick for Fernandez

Three players saw a flop of {5-Spades}{K-Clubs}{6-Spades} and the small blind checked. With about 2,000 in the pot, the hijack bet 850 only to be raised by Leo Fernandez from the cutoff to 1,900. The small blind quickly folded as did the player in the hijack. Fernandez was able to take down the pot and increased his stack to around 26,000 while flashing the {A-Spades}{K-Hearts}. He'll have his work cut out for him however, as Tim Vance, who won the EPT Season 4 Scandinavian Open, has just sat down at the table with 42,000 in chips.
