Manzano's Maldito Rio

Level 24 : 15,000/30,000, 4,000 ante

After about an hour of "check, check, check" there was finally some excitement. Of course it was Joao "Jack" Bauer who provided it. Bauer, sitting in the small blind, found action passed to him. In the blink of an eye, his roughly 650,000 chips were in the middle and called by big blind Alex Manzano. Bauer showed {a-Spades}{j-Spades} against Manzano's {q-Hearts}{q-Clubs}. Manzano has been running great for three days. Surely this hand would end Day 3, right?

Flop: {8-Hearts}{3-Spades}{2-Clubs}. Yep, still running good.
Turn: {j-Diamonds}. Not a problem. Just one more card to get past.
River: {j-Hearts}

Bauer let loose a primal, guttural scream at the sight of the river card. He then walked around the table to hug his friend, Bruno Foster. With that river, Bauer is up to 1.3 million and we're still looking for final table bubble boy.

Action Lacking

Level 23 : 12,000/24,000, 3,000 ante

Don't worry, we haven't missed any of the action. Even though our access to the feature table stage area is very limited, nothing has happened so far to even warrant the scratching of a pen on paper. Well, there was the time when Marcio Motta tanked under the gun preflop for three minutes before finally folding his hand. That drew a big laugh from the rest of the table. And yes, he did know it was on him. If something does come along, you can bet we'll be all over it.

Amos Ben Haim Eliminated in 10th Place (R$31,090)

Level 23 : 12,000/24,000, 3,000 ante
Amos Ben Haim - 10th Place
Amos Ben Haim - 10th Place

The tournament is on a brief pause for a re-draw after the sudden elimination of Amos Ben Haim. Ben Haim, who couldn't get anything to go his way today, open-shoved the button for 482,000. Marcio Motta was waiting in the small blind with {k-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}, bad news indeed for Ben Haim's {k-Spades}{9-Spades}. By the turn Ben Haim had only chop outs, {4-Spades}{a-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}. The river {5-Spades} sent him crashing to the rail in 10th place.

Foster Survives All-In Flip

Level 23 : 12,000/24,000, 3,000 ante

We expected play to slow down with only ten players remaining and nobody dangerously short, but Bruno Foster and Marcelo Fonseca had other ideas. After Henrique Bernardes opened with a standard raise and Fonseca called from the button, Foster moved all in from the small blind for about 440,000. That was enough to fold Bernardes, but Fonseca went for the kill and called with {9-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}. He was racing Foster's {q-Spades}{10-Hearts}. There was a queen right on the flop of a {q-Diamonds}{2-Spades}{3-Spades}{4-Clubs}{8-Diamonds} board to secure a double-up for Foster.

Eduardo Costa Eliminated in 11th Place (R$26,300)

Level 23 : 12,000/24,000, 3,000 ante
Eduardo Costa - 10th Place
Eduardo Costa - 10th Place

After Alex Manzano raised to 49,000 from under the gun, PokerStars qualifier Eduardo Costa moved all in from the button for 111,000. The blinds folded and Manzano quickly made the call.

Manzano held the {J-Hearts}{7-Hearts} and Costa held the {A-Hearts}{Q-Hearts}. Although Costa held the best of it going to the flop, Manzano did have two live cards. The only thing not live was his suit of hearts.

The flop came down {8-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds} and gave Manzano a pair of sevens to take the lead. The turn brought the {4-Spades} to leave Costa needing an ace or a queen on the river.

The river delivered the {K-Hearts} and missed Costa. He was up and out of his chair soon after the river hit the felt to shake the hands of his opponents before exiting to the rail in 11th place. Manzano is now up to 2.38 million in chips.

Walter Oaquim Eliminated in 12th Place (R$26,300)

Level 23 : 12,000/24,000, 3,000 ante
Walter Oaquim - 12th place
Walter Oaquim - 12th place

Things continue to go Alex Manzano's way. There were two short stacks at Manzano's table coming out of the break: Caio Brites and Walter Oaquim. Manzano eliminated Brites on the first hand. A short time later he took out Oaquim when Oaquim open-shoved for about 270,000 with {k-}{j-}. Manzano squeezed out {a-}{q-} and caught an ace on board to seal the deal.

Oaquim walks away with R$26,300 for his 12th-place finish. Manzano, meanwhile, is up to 2.1 million in chips.

Caio Brites Eliminated in 13th Place (R$21,500)

Level 23 : 12,000/24,000, 3,000 ante
Caio Brites - 13th place
Caio Brites - 13th place

On the first hand back from break, action passed to Caio Brites in the small blind. He shoved for 269,000. Alex Manzano squeezed one card and grimaced. Then he squeezed the second card, said, "OK" and called. His pocket treys {3-Clubs}{3-Hearts} were racing the {j-Hearts}{5-Hearts} of Brites. Brites paired jacks on the flop, {4-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}{j-Spades}, but was crestfallen to see Manzano catch yet another set with the {3-Diamonds} turn. Brites was eliminated in 13th place after the {9-Clubs} failed to save his tournament.
