James Cosgrave and Paul Leckey have both been eliminated in one huge hand by Albert Iversen. It all started with an innocent preflop raise from another player entirely -- Cormac Delaney -- who made it 18,000 to go. Cosgrave moved all in next to act, with around 55,000 in front of him. Then button Paul Leckey called all in too (29,000).
Eyebrows were raised when small blind Iversen also chose to make the call (Delaney passed) but his was ahead of Cosgrave's and Leckey's . Brief gutshot hopes were added for Leckey on the turn (the board ) but the river paired the five and the table is getting some more players.
Philip Baker made it 20,000, but a very grim Brent Forrest reraised to 110,000 from the button, leaving himself a mere 30,000 behind. Baker stood up and stroked his chin for some time, but opted to pass.
A raising war between Alan Gilmore in the small blind and Cormac Delaney in the big blind culminated in Gilmore pushing and Delaney dwelling. Eventually Lee Brooke-Pearce called the clock, and with a grin, Delaney tossed his cards into the muck with five seconds left.
Atanas Gueorguiev raised in early position and then called Mika Paasonen's push from the small blind, but he was behind all the way down and doubled up the Finn to a relatively comfortable 120,000.
Marcel Koch's table had fallen silent when he moved all in on the turn against William Kassouf. A pot of 45,000 had grown around the board, and Kassouf had checked, only to be faced with an all-in of around the size of the pot. He thought for a good while before passing his hand. Koch flipped over , but Kassouf, unimpressed, said, "I had nine high."
Yes, the man with the great surname for titling blogs (and the comfortable 210,000 stack) Joe Ruddy has just eliminated Roy "The Boy" Brindley. Having headed only downwards today, the rest of his stack found its way into the middle with , called by Ruddy with . The flop brought a set of fives for Ruddy, and the crowd gave the popular Irishman a round of applause as Brindley headed to collect his €4,900.
People who have recently raised from late position only to fold to a shove from the blinds:
- Niall Smyth, who folded to a shove from Jason Thompkins.
- Then it was Jason Thompkins' turn -- he raised the button but after some time spent with his face in his hands he folded to a push from Ian Wright in the big blind.
- Joe Fleming tried it on from the button, but folded to an absolutely enormous shove from small blind Atanas Gueorguiev.
The current batch of eliminated players can console themselves with more than their tournament buy-in back -- places 54 to 46 get €4,900. This is no relief for the tension of being short-stacked and all in, though -- the big grin shown just now by Fiachra Meere when his preflop reraise went uncalled (amid much table tapping and, "Nice bet"-ing) proving that. "If that's the only one for me all day, I'll smile for free," added Meere.
Lee Brooke-Pearce has just knocked out Johannes Zacharias, whose short-stacked shove preflop with ran straight into Brooke-Pearce's . Some optimistic supporters on the rail called for a ten, but the board started with and pretty much ended with the turn.
