Padraig Parkinson Talks Poker, Charity and God

Level 14 : 1,500/3,000, 400 ante
Padraig Parkinson
Padraig Parkinson

Partypoker ambassador Padraig Parkinson has just busted out of the Day 2 Main Event and we caught up with him for a quick chat over a pint.

Parkinson had fired a few bullets already but did make Day 2 by qualifying from the Day 1d Turbo that began at 10 a.m. today.

“Ungodly hour,” Parkinson reflected, “I can’t believe how stupid I was, but it was a lot of fun and I was playing with a lot of friends.”

Parkinson made it through with a stack of 55,000 and was straight in to Day 2.

“I’m sad I didn’t last longer as I was on a table with a lot of friends including Nicky Power.”

Parkinson related how he only lasted three hands and his exit involving holding {8-}{3-} in the big blind. A flop of {5-}{6-}{7-} saw Parkinson check-call and see the {4-} hit the turn. Again Parkinson check-called and the river was the {8-}. Parkinson moved all in and his opponent held a {9-} for the better straight.

Much more important though and dear to his heart is his charity tournament on Sunday in support of “Poker for the Homeless” that Parkinson has been involved in for over ten years over the course of which they have raised over €250,000.

Over the years they have been supported by Jesse May and a host of top football and snooker stars as well as “shaking down the online bookmakers.”

The charity tournament has been without a home for three years so Parkinson is delighted it has now found a home with partypoker. The buy-in is €100+20 with the €20 going to charity. There is also an add-on for €50 which all goes to charity and every add-on will be matched by partypoker so put your hands in your pockets.

As well as the homeless charity they will be supporting Pieta House which is run by Brother Kevin in Dublin and is involved in suicide prevention and self-harm. Suicide is the number one killer of under 30-year-old men in Ireland and their message is both to raise awareness of this but also to let people know that professional help is available and to not give up.

“I don’t believe in God,” Parkinson said, “but every time I meet Brother Kevin I think I must be wrong.”

Amen to that.

Dara O'Kearney Doubles With Aces

Level 14 : 1,500/3,000, 400 ante
Dara O'Kearney
Dara O'Kearney

Dara O'Kearney opened up from the hijack to 5,500 and got a call from the player on the button before Gavin Carroll jammed all in for around 90,000.

O'Kearney called off the rest of his stack of around 56,000 and the other player folded.

Carroll: {a-Hearts}{10-Hearts}
O'Kearney: {a-Spades}{a-Diamonds}

Carroll was drawing pretty thin before the flop came {A-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}. Some of the players were "oohing and ahhing" at the prospect of maybe a straight being completed.

However, the {q-Hearts} appeared on the turn followed by the {10-Spades} on the river to more than double up O'Kearney.

Car For Gary Newman

Level 13 : 1,200/2,400, 300 ante

Patrick O’Shea was all in against 0682 who was the player at risk.

Gary Newman had {a-Hearts}{q-Diamonds} and was looking for a little help from the dealer as O’Shea tabled {k-Hearts}{k-Spades}.

The board ran out {9-Hearts}{2-Spades}{8-Spades}{j-Hearts}{8-Hearts}

No good for Newman but there is plenty more poker available here with cash games, the High Roller and the Two Day Classic all going on today.

Double For Garry Coffey

Level 13 : 1,200/2,400, 300 ante

Kevin Dooley opened the action and Garry Coffey shoved all in for just over 30,000. Dooley called to put Coffey at risk and the cards were on their backs.

Coffey: {8-Hearts}{8-Clubs}
Dooley: {a-Spades}{10-Clubs}

The cards fell {8-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{j-Hearts}{q-Clubs}.

A set on the flop set Coffey fair and Dooley was left looking at crumbs.

Gareth McMahon Eliminated First Hand of Day 2

Level 13 : 1,200/2,400, 300 ante

Gareth McMahon was the first player eliminated on Day 2 after hitting the rail on the very first hand of the day.

Chris Donnachie jammed all in for 29,000 from early position. McMahon called before Leo Nash jammed for 138,000, which more than covered McMahon's starting stack of 68,000.

McMahon tanked for less than a minute before he called.

Donnachie: {q-Hearts}{q-Clubs}
McMahon: {8-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}
Nash: {k-Clubs}{k-Hearts}

Nash was well ahead before and after the {10-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{7-Diamonds} flop.

McMahon shouted for a nine and a {9-Spades} appeared on the turn. He then shouted for a six, but the {q-Spades} appeared on the board to eliminated him from the tournament. Meanwhile, Donnachie, who brought a short stack forward from the turbo Day 1d, triple up.

Nash wasn't too upset since he won the side pot.

"That's alright," said Nash. "I'll take that."
