Sowers Stumbles, Stein Adds to Stack

Level 28 : 40,000/80,000, 5,000 ante
Sam Stein
Sam Stein

Sam Stein opened to 180,000 with the button and Mike Sowers called from the small blind. Both players checked the {10-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{5-Spades} flop and after the {5-Clubs} turned Sowers led for 290,000. Stein called.

The river was the {2-Clubs} and Sowers slowed down, checking to Stein who fired 435,000. Sowers then check-raised to 1.25 million sending Stein deep into the tank. He eventually called showing {10-Hearts}{8-Spades} for a pair of tens and we are not sure what Sowers had because of our limited access to the feature table, but the legendary Robbie Thompson said he showed just jack-high.

Stein's stack increased to 6.5 million chips with the win while Sowers slipped to 3.5 million.

Chris Moneymaker Eliminated in 11th Place ($130,000)

Level 28 : 40,000/80,000, 5,000 ante
Chris Moneymaker - 11th Place
Chris Moneymaker - 11th Place

Action folded to Chris Moneymaker in the cutoff who moved all in for just over a million chips. The button and small blind released, but Galen Hall called from the big blind.

Moneymaker: {k-Clubs}{6-Clubs}
Hall: {a-Spades}{6-Hearts}

Moneymaker needed some serious help to catch up, and received little from the {5-Hearts}{8-Spades}{2-Spades} flop. His luck changed when the {k-Spades} turned however, giving him a leading pair of kings. Hall could re-suck with an ace or a spade and did so when the {a-Diamonds} spiked on the river.

Just like that the 2003 World Series of Poker Main Event champion went from second in chips to eliminated in 11th place taking home $130,000. It was a great run for Moneymaker, but unfortunately he fell just short of the final table.

The board ran out {J-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{K-Hearts} and Plouffe doubled up. Palacios was left with three million in chips.

Dmitriy Stelmak raised to 195,000 from the small blind. Bolivar Palacios called in the big blind and the flop came down {Q-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}{4-Spades}. Stelmak fired a continuation bet worth 165,000 and Palacios called.

The {9-Diamonds} hit the turn and Stelmak checked. Palacios bet 310,000 and Stelmak called.

The river completed the board with the {5-Clubs} and Stelmak checked. Palacios bet 415,000 and Stelmak called.

Palacios tabled {K-}{J-} for king high. Stelmak held the {Q-Diamonds}{9-Hearts} for queens and nines and won the pot. He's now up to 4.6 million while Palacios dropped back to 4.4 million.

Level 28 : 40,000/80,000, 5,000 ante
Michael Pesek - 12th Place
Michael Pesek - 12th Place

Galen Hall raised to 190,000 from under the gun. Chris Moneymaker flatted from the cutoff seat, Anton Ionel flatted from the button and then Michael Pesek called all in from the small blind. All four players saw the flop come down {K-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{3-Diamonds} with three of them active while Pesek was all in.

All three checked and the turn brought the {K-Diamonds} to pair the board with cowboys. Hall fired 225,000 and was called by both Moneymaker and Ionel.

The river card completed the board with the {Q-Diamonds} and everyone checked. Ionel tabled the winner with the {A-Spades}{J-Hearts} for a broadway straight and won the side pot. He also beat Pesek out of the main pot to win that and knock him out of the tournament in 12th place.

Level 28 : 40,000/80,000, 5,000 ante

Dmitriy Stelmak raised from the hijack seat to 160,000. Sam Stein made the call from the big blind and the two took a flop. The {K-Clubs}{Q-Spades}{6-Clubs} came out and Stein checked. His opponent, Stelmak, fired 150,000. Stein made the call.

The turn card was the {9-Diamonds} and both players checked before seeing the {A-Clubs} complete the board on the river. Stein fired 330,000 and Stelmak made the call.

Stein held the {J-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} for a straight and Stelmak mucked his hand. Stein increased to 3.5 million while Stelmak dropped back to 3.45 million.
