Day 1b Started

Welcome To Day 1b Of The 2013 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure Main Event!

Location shots from the 2013 PCA!

The 2012 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure Main Event continues today with Day 1b action from the Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island in the Bahamas. Yesterday Day 1a of this tournament drew 320 players, which represented a 23.445% decrease from 2012’s Day 1a. Nevertheless, the field here today is expected to be huge!

We expect to see the likes of Daniel Negreanu, Jason Mercier, Phil Hellmuth, Vanessa Selbst, Victor Ramdin, Brandon Cantu and Shaun Deeb, just to name a few. We’ll also no doubt see the finalist from yesterday’s $100,000 Super High Roller final table, which included Nick Schulman, David “Doc” Sands, and eventual winner Scott Seiver.

Another man who will be playing is the defending champion, John DiBella. The amateur won this event last year after overcoming a final table that included Xuan Liu, Faraz Jaka, and Kyle Julius to win $1,775,000. What’s more, Dibella won the 2013 PCA Event #3 No-Limit Hold’em Turbo just a few days ago for $69,780. He’s the defending champion and is full of confidence and momentum—a dangerous competition.

All of today’s participants will be chasing Maxim Lobzhanidze, who emerged as the Day 1a chip leader of the advancing 162 players—he bagged up 248,900 in chips. Following closely on his heels were Gilbert Diaz (215,900) and Darren Elias (191,000). With that said, a bigger field means more chips and play and oftentimes results in the big stack emerging from Day 1b. We’ll just have to wait and see if that proves to be true today.

Day 1b will kick off at the Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island at 12:00 EST, so stay tuned to PokerNews throughout the rest of the day as we provide you with the latest coverage from the tournament floor!

The cards are now in the air here on Day 1b of the PCA Main Event. There was a brief announcement prior to the start of play where Daniel Negreanu announced the latest addition to Team PokerStars Pro... Jake Cody.

The Triple Crown winner is a solid addition to an already stacked team.

Peter Jetten Wins First-Ever Major Open Face Chinese Poker Tournament

It’s hard to recall a game that has grown as fast and been as popular as Open Face Chinese. The game garnered mainstream attention during the World Series of Poker Europe as players like Phil Hellmuth, Brandon Cantu, Jeff Lisandro, Joe Hachem and Jason Mercier spent their evenings playing long sessions of the game.

The player enthusiasm for the game inspired PokerStars to host the first-ever Open Face Chinese tournament a this year’s PCA, and while there were a few that’ll need to be ironed out moving forward, the event proved a tremendous success as 59 players accounted for 18 re-entries, creating a prize pool of $149,380.

Along with many of the aforementioned players, the tournament also attracted Chinese Poker aficionados Daniel Negreanu and Shaun Deeb. Unfortunately neither of those players, nor any of those listed about, had much success. Instead, the title went to well-known Canadian pro Peter Jetten, who has the distinction of being the first major live Open Face Chinese champion.

Minieri Pushes Out Somerville

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

Dario Minieri opened with a raise to an unknown amount from under the gun. From across the table, Jason Somerville tossed out a three-bet to 700. It folded back to Minieri and he wasted little time announcing a four-bet. It was 1,600 to go and Somerville decided to make the call.

The flop was {2-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}{10-Clubs} and Minieri continued for 1,400. Somerville called and the dealer produced the {4-Spades}. Minieri turned up the aggression on fourth street with 4,100. Somerville chose not to call this bet and awarded the pot to the Italian Team PokerStars Pro.

Phelps In The House

Michael Phelps
Michael Phelps

While scanning the field today our Live Reporting Team came across swimming legend Michael Phelps as he took his seat for the event. For the few that may not know, Phelps is the most decorated Olympian in history with an astounding 22 medals, 18 of which are gold. While Phelps' arena of choice is the pool, it seems that he is now turning his eyes to the poker world.

Phelps will have his work cut out for him today, however, as the field is stacked with the greatest minds in the poker world. Phelps has Melanie Weisner at his starting table and she could prove to be some tough competition for the gold-medalist. As the day progresses we'll keep you posted on Phelps' actions here at the PCA 2013 Main Event.
