Day 1 Completed

Day 1 of the Main Event is History

Level 15 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Day 1 Bags
Day 1 Bags

The Main Event is always the most anticipated event of the series at Club Regent Casino, and this year, the second biggest turnout ever came to try their hand at the big prizes. A total of 233 entries were recorded when the dinner break ended after Level 6.

That put $233,000 into the middle to divvy up between the top 24 finishers. The top prize is $61,499, and the 24th place finisher will still take home $2,476. Most of the final table of ten will take home at least $5,000, with only tenth place taking slightly less at $4,741.

There were quite a few notable players who came by to take a shot at the title, but not all of them were able to make it through the first day. Kyle Hartree, Deven Lane, Norbert Rosario, and Mark Charles were all looking to add some points to their Player of the Series standings with a deep run in the Main, but they all fell short of the mark. Fashion mogul Peter Nygard had an amazing run through the early and middle stages of Day 1, but ended up card dead at the end of the night and busted in the final level of the day.

Equally, there were quite a few big names that bagged chips at the end of Day 1. Patrick "Super" Serda, the second biggest poker winner in Manitoba, bagged a stack. Also still in the mix are beasts like Eric Wasylenko, Chris Clisby, Mark Golub, Anders Prokopowich, 2018 Spring Champion Shaner Yo, Dave Shiska, Dylan Ellis, and Shawn Sperber among many others.

Full chip counts and seat assignments will be posted shortly.

Action for Day 2 kicks off at noon on Sunday, and they'll play down to a winner before they quit. PokerNews Canada will be on the floor from start to end to bring you all the action as a new Main Event Champion is crowned.

The Final 50

With just 20 minutes left in the night, the action is starting to slow down a bit. The field is now down to 50 players remaining, which all remaining players are in the special tournament area of the Club Regent Casino poker room. There's still a few more minutes of play left, but the final results from Day 1 will be published shortly.

Bartosh Bets All Three Streets

Level 15 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante

A player under the gun raised to 13,000, AJ Bartosh called in middle position and the big blind came along as well. Action was checked to Bartosh on a flop of {j-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}{5-Spades}, he bet 8,000 and both players called.

The {6-Hearts} turn card was checked to Bartosh and he fired 14,000. The big blind called and the other player folded.

Heads up to the turn card which was the {j-Hearts}. The big blind checked it over Bartosh who splashed 37,000 across the line. After some thought the big blind found a fold and Bartosh chipped up to over 200,000.

Top Pair Holds For Nygard

Level 14 : 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante

A player in middle position raised to 8,000 and Peter Nygard three bet to 20,000 on the button. The original raiser called and they went to a flop of {2-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{q-Clubs}.

The player in middle position came out firing and moved all in for 45,000. Nygard looked at his cards one more time and made the call.

Nygard: {k-Spades}{q-Diamonds}
Opponent: {a-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}

Nygard had his opponent drawing slim, but the {3-Clubs} turn card meant he had to fade a river club as well. The river was the {7-Diamonds} and Nygard eliminated his opponent.

Roque Rivers the Nuts

Level 14 : 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante

Bel Roque moved all in for his last 23,000 from middle position and got called by the small blind. Roque was at risk and needed to improve headed to a flop.

Roque: {a-Spades}{7-Spades}
Opponent: {a-Clubs}{q-Spades}

The flop gave Roque some hope as he picked up the nut flush draw {q-Clubs}{j-Spades}{10-Spades}. The turn paired his seven {7-Hearts} and the river gave him the nuts {6-Spades} and a full double up.

Shiska Shoves His BIg Blind

Level 14 : 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante

Shawn Sperber had a bet of 8,000 in front of him in middle position, and Dave Shiska had all his 58,500 in the middle as a raise.

"Sorry Guys, I'm going to need some time," Sperber said after being in the tank for awhile already. He kept thinking for awhile longer, but eventually released his hand. "OK, I'll believe you this time."

As he was raking in the pot, Shiska showed the table his black aces.
