A Gift for Chan

Level 2 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Justin Chan
Justin Chan

Now he has finally made Day 2, Hong Kong’s Justin Chan is wasting no time building a big stack, though he has been aided in his task by Eric Xiao.

We missed the hand that gave Chan all his chips but he was kind enough to tell us the story of how he got them.

According to Chan it was Xiao who was the initial aggressor, opening the action from under-the-gun with a raise to 3,600 and Chan, sitting UTG+1, peeked down to see {k-}{k-} and re-raised to 10,500.

Xiao made the call and the {k-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{6-} flop was just the one Chan was after. Xiao checked and Chan got cute and checked it back and a non-diamond {9-} hit the turn. This saw Xiao check and Chan now fire for 16,000, which Xiao called.

The arrival of another non-diamond {10-} on the river paired the board and gave Chan a full house and, after Xiao checked Chan bombed it and bet 42,000. This saw Xiao hit the think tank hard for a good five minutes before a tablemate called the clock. With just seconds to spare Xiao check-raised all in for 80,000 in total and Chan could not call fast enough and Xiao could only throw his {j-}{j-} away and head for the rail while Chan stacked up to 310,000.

Chao No More

Level 2 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Percy Chao
Percy Chao

Percy Chao’s Day 2B is now over and we got all the gory details. It was Jin Giang Shi who was the man to show Chao the door with a one-two combo, taking a big bite out of Chao’s stack in the first hand the two tangled in and showing Chao the door in the second.

It was Shi who was the aggressor in the first, popping it up to 2,600 from middle position, Chao called from the cutoff and the big blind came along for the ride to take the action three-way to a flop of {k-}{k-}{7-}.

After the big blind checked, Shi continuation bet 4,500 with Chao the only caller and a {j-} came in on the turn with Shi checking and Chao betting 12,000, which was called.

There was another {j-} on the river to double pair the board and Shi checked again. Chao fired for 40,000 but had to fold out when Shi shoved, with the Chinese player flashing Chao {a-}{k-} before raking in the pot.

The two tangled again a few hands later with Chao raising a Shi open limp with the Chinese player calling to take the action heads-up to a {8-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{2-Clubs} flop.

Shi checked, Chao c-bet 3,000 and got check-raised to 11,000 but made the call to bring in the {q-Diamonds} turn. Shi shoved and Chao called off the last of his chips but his {6-Clubs}{4-Clubs} could not beat Shi’s {8-}{9-} and that was that.

Wongwichit Back in Action

Level 2 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Phachara Wongwichit
Phachara Wongwichit

Phachara Wongwichit is back in action and while the Thai player qualified for yesterday’s Day 2A he could not manage to make it through to Day 3 so is having another go today.

So far that seems to be working out for him and we caught Wongwichit in action in a three-way hand against Hong Kong’s King Ho Tsui and China’s Xixiang Luo.

It was Tsui who was the initial aggressor, making it 3,200 to go from the hi-jack, Luo called the button and Wongwichit made the call from the big blind to take the action three-way for a rainbow flop of {9-Hearts}{k-Spades}{6-Clubs}.

Wongwichit checked the action over to Tsui, who continuation-bet 4,200. This deterred no one with both Luo and Wongwichit making the call to keep the action three-way to the {k-Hearts} turn.

It was checked all around and the {a-Diamonds} landed on the river. While he took his time about it, Wongwichit eventually led for 20,000 and the action was on Tsui. The Hong Kong player looked sorely tempted but eventually chose to let it go, as did Luo and Wongwichit scooped the pot to climb to 138,000.

Saul and Lee Tangle

Level 2 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Thomas Lee
Thomas Lee

We struggled to catch the UK’s Oliver Saul in action on Day 1F, though he was one of the larger stacks on the day we could never quite manage to catch him in a hand. We caught him in one today though, and it was for quite a big pot.

We picked up the action on a flop of {3-Diamonds}{2-Spades}{6-Spades} with close to 16,000 in bets, blinds and antes in the middle already, just as Canada’s Thomas Lee (middle position) checked the action over to Saul (cutoff), who fired for 8,500.

Lee counted out some chips, then added some more for good measure and check-raised to 23,000 in total to send Saul deep into the tank, where he remained for a minute or so before deciding to peel off one more card.

He actually got two as Lee checked the {q-Diamonds} turn over to Saul, who checked it right back.

The {7-Clubs} hit the river and now Lee led out for 30,000 and Saul had a good long think about Lee’s possible hands before sliding out the call. Lee rolled over {q-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} for a turned top pair – quite cheeky really when you consider the fact he check-raised the flop with no pair, no draw – and an unimpressed looking Saul pitched his cards into the muck.

Huang Shoves on Cheng

Level 1 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Kun Huang
Kun Huang

A big pot played out between Hong Kong’s Nevan Cheng and China’s Kun Huang and while we missed the pre-flop action there was obviously some serious betting going on between our two protagonists as there was over 36,000 already in the pot with the flop spread {4-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{7-Hearts}.

Cheng was in the big blind so had first stab and threw out a rather chunky 25,000 bet and the action was on Huang, who asked Cheng how much more he was playing – roughly another 100,000.

That was enough for Huang who slammed down his whole stack and Cheng rocked back in his chair like he had just been slapped. While Cheng had Huang covered, his all-in of bet would cost Cheng anther 88,400 more and he eventually decided to pick a better spot and let it go.

Xiao and Tsang Tangle

Level 1 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

Hong Kong’s Anson Tsang opened the action with an early position raise to 2,500 with the sharply dressed Eric Xiao the only caller in the big blind to take the action heads-up to a flop of {7-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}, which Xiao checked.

Xiao clearly liked the flop as he immediately led for 2,800 and the action was on Tsang, who decided to test the waters with a raise, making it 7,500 to go. Xiao did not take long to reach for his big chips and three-bet to 16,000 in total.

Tsang took the hint and mucked and Xiao scooped in the pot.

“I had queens,” said Xiao when Tsang quizzed him about the hand, though it’s a moot point now as he won the pot without showdown to climb to 115,000 while Tsang dropped to 78,000.

Tai Check-raises for Victory

Level 1 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

Following a raise to 2,200 from a player under-the-gun, Germany’s Kilian Loeffler made the call from middle position and Hong Kong’s David Tai came along from the big blind to take the action three-way to a flop of {4-Spades}{4-Clubs}{7-Spades}.

Tai checked to the raiser, who tossed out a 2,800 continuation bet, which Loeffler called before Tai check-raised to 7,800 in total. The original raiser quickly got out of the way and the action was back on Loeffler. The German looked like he was seriously considering it, but then thought better of it and folded leaving Tai to rake in the pot.

Cards in the Air

Level 1 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

The cards are now in motion and the 55 Day 2B qualifiers have been joined by 21 fresh faces and some familiar ones. Hong Kong’s Justin Chan finally won himself a Day 2 seat, qualifying via the last chance turbo flight on Wednesday, 29 November, though it has taken him 8 bullets to get here.

Linh Tran has re-entered after failing to make the cut yesterday and Bulgaria’s Atanas Kavrakov is back in action after busting at the hands of Day 2A top dog Wai Kiat Lee.

However, it is some of Kavrakov’s tablemates we caught in action in the following hand. Action folded around to China’s Ping Cheong Fung on the button and he made it 2,800 to go with Japan’s Yukio Imanishi the only caller in the big blind.

The flop came down a monochrome {7-Spades}{10-Spades}{6-Spades} and Imanishi peeked at his cards for a quick spade check and then checked the action to Fung, who continuation bet 4,000, which was called and it was off to the {4-Diamonds} turn.

Imanishi checked again and Fung checked it right back and the {4-Spades} landed on the river to pair the board and bring in a fourth spade. Both players checked once more and Imanishi took down the hand with {q-Spades}{j-Clubs} after Fung mucked.
