Qualifier Adam Bonilla Leads Final 8 After First Flight of PokerGO Cup Showcase

Level 15 : Blinds 15,000/25,000, 25,000 ante
Adam Bonilla and Kai Nicholls

The first starting flight of the opening event of the 2026 PokerGO Cup in Las Vegas took place today and saw eight players bagging.

Event #1: $3,000 PokerGO Cup Showcase, the lowest buy-in offering of the prestigious series, drew 54 runners in the first starting flight, including top poker pros like Sean Winter and Anthony Zinno, as well as up-and-coming qualifiers looking to make their mark in the PokerGO Studio.

One of those qualifiers was Adam Bonilla, a daily tournament regular with under $20,000 in live earnings who bagged the Day 1a chip lead over Winter, Zinno and other poker pros including Samuel Laskowitz, Mitchell Halverson and Victoria Livschitz.

Nicholls Runs Over Opponents

Shakespeare's Hamlet is one of the most famous tragedies in the history of literature, and Brandon Hamlet's exit in the PokerGO Studio four centuries later was just as tragic.

The New York grinder got his chips in with aces against the queens of Kai Nicholls, who flopped queens full to put a tough beat on Hamlet.

It wasn't Nicholls' first casualty. The Australian entertained the table earlier in the day by telling the story of when he hit two wild boars while driving in the Czech Republic before fleeing the scene and being detained for three hours at the German border.

Unlike on the Czech roads, Nicholls, who held the chip lead for part of the evening, was able to dodge obstacles on Day 1a. He correctly folded kings toward the end of the night in a heads-up pot against Bonilla, who used some table talk to persuade his opponent to fold as he protected his pocket aces from a two-outer.

Other casualties in the Showcase event included PokerGO founder Cary Katz and longtime pros Shannon Shorr, Jonathan Little and Justin Zaki, who was eliminated on the soft bubble after several orbits of nursing a micro stack.

Shortly after, 2025 WSOP Main Event finalist Adam Hendrix fell on the money bubble as his pocket nines were stone pipped by the pocket tens of Halverson, who launched to second in chips after winning the pot.

There is another starting flight left to play in the Showcase event, which will kick off on Monday at noon local time. Day 1b will follow the same structure as the first starting flight, with starting stacks of 125,000 and blinds of 500/1,000/1000.

Levels will once again be 30 minutes in duration with short breaks every four levels.

Stay tuned as the PokerNews live reporting team will be back on site on Monday for continued coverage of the PokerGO Cup in Las Vegas. Check out the live reporting portal in the meantime.

Adam Hendrix opened to 200,000 for most of his stack and called off as Mitchell Halverson three-bet in the small blind.

Adam Hendrix: 9x9x
Mitchell Halverson: 10x10x

Hendrix was pipped and couldn't spike a two-outer as the board ran out blank to mark his elimination on the money bubble of Day 1a.

Nicholls Correctly Folds a Monster

The two chip leaders played a massive pot on the money bubble and Kai Nicholls got away unscathed despite having a massive holding.

On a flop of 942, Nicholls and Adam Bonilla exchanged bets with Nicholls committing around 200,000 from his stack. Bonilla then raised all in to send Nicholls deep into the tank for his remaining stack of around 900,000.

"Tough spot," said Bonilla. "I think I know what you have."

"You can't have it again!" cried Nicholls as he used five time banks with other players crowding around.

Nicholls eventually folded, leading Bonilla to flash aces. Nicholls then quickly retrieved his hand from the dealer and showed that he found the fold with pocket kings.

Zinno Cracks Capretta's Aces on Soft Bubble

Level 14 : Blinds 10,000/20,000, 20,000 ante
Anthony Zinno
Anthony Zinno

Michael Berk opened from under the gun and Anthony Zinno three-bet to 200,000 on the button as Timothy Capretta four-bet shoved in the big blind. Berk folded and Zinno called with a bigger stack.

Timothy Capretta: AA All in
Anthony Zinno: KQ

Capretta had picked up aces at the right time, but the dealer had other plans as the board ran out Q548Q as Zinno rivered trips to send Capretta out on the soft money bubble.

Tragic Ending for Hamlet

Level 12 : Blinds 6,000/12,000, 12,000 ante
Kai Nicholls
Kai Nicholls

Brandon Hamlet opened from middle position and Kai Nicholls called on the button before Sean Winter three-bet to 70,000 in the small blind.

Hamlet then four-bet all in for around 180,000 and Nicholls snap-called to send Winter deep into the tank. After using two time banks, Winter folded what he later said was pocket jacks.

Brandon Hamlet: AA All in
Kai Nicholls: QQ

Hamlet was out of his seat as the flop landed 4Q4 to give his opponent a full house, and he couldn't hit an ace as the board finished out 82 to bring an end to Hamlet's run so tragic that William Shakespeare couldn't conceive of it.

Suck, Re-Suck and What Would Have Been Quads

Level 9 : Blinds 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante
Cary Katz
Cary Katz

Samuel Laskowitz opened to 12,000 in the hijack and Adam Hendrix three-bet to 33,000 in the cutoff. Cary Katz then four-bet jammed a stack of 142,000 in the small blind as Laskowitz re-shoved a slightly bigger stack.

"Uh-oh! I wasn't worried about him," said Katz as Hendrix folded what he later said was pocket tens.

Cary Katz: AK All in
Samuel Laskowitz: JJ

The flop landed Q410 and Katz called for the dealer to give Laskowitz a set as the J turn landed to give Katz Broadway. Laskowitz then successfully called for the board to pair as the 10 gave him a full house and gave Hendrix what would have been quads.

Hit and Run at Table 3

Level 8 : Blinds 2,500/5,000, 5,000 ante
Kai Nicholls
Kai Nicholls

Jeff Platt and Justin Young played an uneventful limped pot between the blinds, but it ended up being one of the most exciting moments of the day.

As the hand played out, new table edition Kai Nicholls told the table about the time he hit two wild boars while driving on a poker trip in the Czech Republic and was later detained for over three hours at the German border.

"It felt pretty serious," Nicholls said about the October 2025 incident, adding that he is still awaiting his punishment for fleeing the scene of the "hit and run."

Nicholls said there "hardly any damage, surprisingly," to the car, but the feral pigs weren't so lucky.

"I folded just to listen to this story!" said Michael Rossitto.

Meanwhile, the hand played out as Platt and Young checked on the flop of 6810. Platt then called a bet of 5,000 on the A turn and bet 18,000 on the 2 river to take down the pot.

Unlike those boars, Young, who has nursed a short stack the last few levels, will live to see another day.

Platt Chops Despite Being Flopped Nearly Dead

Level 7 : Blinds 2,500/5,000, 5,000 ante
Jeff Platt
Jeff Platt

Jeff Platt has been on an open-jamming spree and did so from the button as Shannon Shorr called in the big blind after taking a seat at the table.

Jeff Platt: A2 All in
Shannon Shorr: A5

"Chop it up!" shouted Justin Young before the flop landed J75 to pair Shorr's kicker and have Platt drawing to just a few runner-runners.

The J turn kept things interesting as the A landed on the river to counterfeit Shorr's pair as the two chopped the pot.

In a heads-up pot on a board of 4K82, Cary Katz moved all in for 68,000 and was called by the bigger-stacked Daniel Stancer.

Cary Katz: 109 All in

Stancer's top pair was no match for Katz' flush and the meaningless Q river rolled off to earn the PokerGO founder a double.
