Savage Blow For Nyberg

Ben Savage advances to round two
Ben Savage advances to round two
Ben Savage has made a great comeback to claim the win against Dean Nyberg.

In a rather strange hand, the blinds were huge when Nyberg opened to 2,000 and Savage made the call to see a flop of {Q-Clubs}{7-Spades}{8-Clubs}.

The pot was already so big that Savage moved all in with his {Q-Hearts}{3-Hearts} and Nyberg decided that he just couldn't fold his {J-Hearts}{2-Diamonds} for jack-high.

The turn was the {8-Hearts} and river the {9-Clubs} and Savage takes it down with a 2-1 win.

The scoreboard now reads 9-6 in favour of the online team with just the battle of Steve Topakas and Steve Leonard the only match left still in progress.

The chips were in preflop with Guzzardi's {A-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} needing to improve against Marcus' {10-Clubs}{10-Spades}.

The help arrived when the board was spread {K-Spades}{A-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{8-Hearts} giving Guzzardi the win for the online team. The score is now 9-5 for the online young guns.

No Luck For The Big Show

Steve "The Big Show" Topakas has been just a tad unlucky in his match with Steve "StevoL" Leonard.

In the latest hand Topakas opened to 275 preflop with Leonard making the call. They took a {k-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{8-Spades} flop with Topakas leading out 550, only for Leonard to move over the top all-in. Topakas snap called and tabled {9-Clubs}{8-Diamonds} to be ahead of the {K-Spades}{j-Hearts} that Leonard was holding.

"Come on hold up" shouted Topakas in his standard style.

The {10-Hearts} turn gave Leonard an open-ended straight draw which he promptly completed on the {7-Diamonds} river.

Topakas was not happy after the hand, muttering expletives and wandering around the table.

He's down to about 800 chips in the decisive rubber.

With Michael Guzzardi's recent victory the online team leads 9-5 with just two first round games left in progress.

Lee: {9-Hearts}{8-Spades}
Tran: {5-Clubs}{6-Spades}

The turn was the {J-Diamonds} and river the {2-Spades} and Lee claims victory in a 2-1 result.

Savage Survives

In a see-sawing contest, Ben Savage is battling to stay alive against Dean Nyberg but he has just found a double up to provide a little breathing room.

Nyberg moved all in from the button with {Q-Spades}{8-Clubs} but Savage made the call with a dominant {Q-Clubs}{J-Hearts}.

The board ran out {3-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{J-Clubs} and Savage doubles to over 3,000 chips.

Pearson Extends Lead For The Online Team

Matthew Pearson
Matthew Pearson
Matthew Pearson is through to round two with a tough 2-1 win over Kerry Stead.

The final hand saw Pearson raise the button with the {6-Spades}{2-Spades}, before the two committed their chips on the turn with the board reading {A-Spades}{K-Spades}{8-?}{7-Spades} as Stead tabled {K-?}{3-Spades}. The river bricked out and Pearson's flush sees him through to round two.

The online team are now out to an 8-4 lead. With only four matches remaining, the live team will need to win all four to maintain the balance of power in this contest.

Topakas Folds Tough

The Big (Fold) Show?
The Big (Fold) Show?
Steve "The Big Show" Topakas has showed that classy folds are among the arsenal he brings to the table.

At the turn, with the board {6-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{8-Clubs}, The Big Show fired out a bet, only for Steve Leonard to move over the top all-in.

The Big Show tanked for a good while before open mucking the {8-Spades}. Leonard mucked his hand and the players are virtually even in the third and deciding rubber.

Many might be wondering how a high profile Texas based player might have come to join the PokerNetwork Live and Online challenge.

We recently chatted to Clonie Gowen, fresh off her 2-0 victory over Joel Dodds to find out why she has popped up at the PokerNews Cup.

"I'm a big (St Kilda) Saints fan," said Gowen. "When they made the grand final I decided I had to be there and I knew this was on, so what better excuse to get down to Australia."

Gowen said he was disappointed with the result of the AFL Grand Final but said that the Saints had played hard.

She will need to put her best effort in as well to get the live team back into this challenge as lag behind 7-4 at the moment.
