Day 1a of the Mid-States Poker Tour (MSPT) Season 10 finale saw 172 entrants take part in the $1,100 buy-in, $500K GTD Main Event. After 15 levels of play, just 20 remained with Bill Kachel and his stack 406,500 leading the way.

Others to bag big stacks were MSPT Hall of Famer and all-time money leader Rich Alsup (335,000), MSPT champ Mark Sandness (319,000), and Jeff Petronack (279,500).

They were joined by players like poker reporter Brandon Temple (175,500), Loki Abboud (163,000), WSOP bracelet winner Derek McMaster (136,500), Ian Matakis (112,500), and Luke Vrabel (90,000).

Of course, not everyone was so lucky. Among those to fire and fall were HPT Season XV Player of the Year Nick Pupillo, Minnesota Poker Hall of Famer Mike “Schneids” Schneider, last year’s MSPT Platinum Pass winner Brandon Welter, and former MSPT champs Aaron Johnson, Matt Kirby, Kou Vang, Blake Bohn, Luke Arora, Jeremy Dresch, and Jason Seitz.

Those players, as well as any newcomers, have two more opportunities to play. Day 1b will get underway at 3 p.m. local time on Friday followed by Day 1c at the same time on Saturday. The surviving players from all three flights will then return to Canterbury at 11 a.m. on Sunday to play down to a winner. The final table will be live-streamed worldwide on a 15-minute delay.

Jeff Maas: {7-Hearts}{7-Clubs}
Derek McMaster: {10-Hearts}{9-Clubs}

Maas was ahead with his made hand but didn't like the {k-Hearts}{j-Clubs}{j-Diamonds} flop.

McMaster paired with the {10-Spades} turn and Maas took his exit after the {4-Clubs} river completed the board.

Lawrence Eliminated by Koppel

Level 15 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante

Andy Tran opened for 9,000 from the cutoff and Jim Lawrence three-bet all in for 49,000 from the small blind. Action was on Jared Koppel who came over the top for 97,000 from the big blind sending Tran into the tank. After a few minutes of consideration, Tarn mucked {10-Hearts}{10-Spades} face-up leaving Koppel and Lawrence heads-up with Lawrence at risk.

Jared Koppel: {a-Hearts}{j-Spades}
Jim Lawrence: {k-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}

Lawrence was behind and didn't receive any help from the {6-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{j-Hearts} flop.

The turn brought the {8-Clubs} and Lawrence needed to hit one of his two overcards but it wouldn't be as the river fell the {4-Diamonds} ending his night.

Nick Welu: {k-Clubs}{10-Spades}
Steve Webb: {a-Clubs}{7-Clubs}

The {a-Spades} turn gave Webb full house and quad outs but the river fell the {5-Hearts} giving Welu the much needed double.

Poker Reporter Sends Two MSPT Champs to the Rail

Level 14 : 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante
Jason Sell
Jason Sell

Preflop action exploded and resulted in two former MSPT champs, Jason Sell and Rob Wazwaz, being all in for around 55,000 each. Poker reporter Brandon Temple had them both at risk with all three hands on their back.

Jason Sell: {5-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}
Rob Wazwaz: {a-Spades}{k-Hearts}
Brandon Temple: {q-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}

Temple had the best of it but the {3-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{4-Clubs} flop made things interested as Sell flopped an open-ended straight flush draw.

The {2-Diamonds} turn was of no consequence, while the {k-Clubs} river hit everyone. Wazwaz made kings and deuces, Sell a club flush, but Temple the best flush to score the double elimination.

Ace on the River Keeps Salhus Alive

Level 14 : 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante

There was all in action preflop between Andy Tran from the cutoff and Roscoe Salhus from the big blind with Salhus at risk.

Andy Tran: {k-Spades}{j-Hearts}
Roscoe Salhus: {a-Diamonds}{q-Spades}

Salhus was ahead but didn't like the {a-Clubs}{j-Spades}{j-Clubs} flop that gave Tran trips.

The {8-Diamonds} turn was no help to Salhus as he needed to spike an ace on the river to stay alive.

Luckily, Salhus did just that as the dealer dropped the {a-Hearts} to keep his seat in the tournament.
