Matthew Wantman Chops Triton Title With Best Friend Nick Schulman

An emotional Matthew Wantman described his maiden Triton Poker title as a "huge breakthrough" after defeating best friend Nick Schulman heads-up to win the Triton Jeju II $50K NLH 7-Handed for $836,721.

The American, who has endured a tough year on the felt, became the latest in a long line of first-time winners here at Les A Casino this festival, getting the better of some truly elite talent at the final table, including Hall of Famer Schulman, Daniel Dvoress, Ben Tollerene and Danny Tang.

Speaking to PokerNews following his victory, Wantman said, "I've been fighting for deep runs and big scores for a while without any. Coming back, playing bad, questioning myself, and just going through it like any poker player does, struggling and having that last longer than I was expecting, and then to come here and get a huge win, it's so massive I can't even put it into words."

Nick Schulman Chipleads the Main Event

Nick Schulman is enjoying a hell of a few days here at Triton Jeju! After chopping the $50k event yesterday with his great friend Matthew Wantman, the Hall of Famer and broadcaster jumped into the Main Event late and now has the biggest stack of all.

Schulman leads with 1,822,000, good for 182 big blinds, from Danilo Velasevic in 2nd, with the pair having pulled a long way clear of the rest of the field. We're expecting payouts to be confirmed shortly, but after 196-runners created a $20 million prize pool, it's safe to say Schulman and the rest will be playing for a lot.

The record-breaking $200,000 Triton Invitational has been crowned, but there is no let-up at the Triton Super High Roller Series Jeju II.

After Joao Simao battled back from just two big blinds to win a record $7.25 million yesterday, attention turns to the $100,000 NLH Main Event, which resumes with 73 players remaining and $16 million already in the prize pool.

Danilo Velasevic leads the way with 1,864,000, with 2025 Poker Hall of Fame inductee Nick Schulman close behind after jumping straight into the Main Event following his runner-up finish in the $50,000 NLH 7-Handed. Malaysia's Lun Loon rounds out the top three, while Jean-Noel Thorel, Chahnhoon Jung and Alex Foxen are also among the big stacks.

Registration closed at the start of Level 11, so the field is now set for the race toward the final table and another huge Triton title.

And there is another high-stakes event getting underway later in the day, with the $50,000 Turbo Bounty Quattro kicking off at 5 p.m. local time.
