Mark Lane Leads Day 1b Field

Level 8 : 400/800, 100 ante
Mark Lane
Mark Lane

Mark Lane leads at the end of Day 1b of the UKIPT Isle of Man with a stack of 165,300. He is followed by Simon Fuller in second place (127,100) and Sam Grafton who made a late surge to end up third with 127,000.

There were 267 players who entered today bringing the total number of players for the first ever PokerStars event on the Isle of Man to 381. This was the day that the Team PokerStars Pros came out in force making it a tough field, possibly one of the toughest the UKIPT has ever seen over the last four seasons.

There were nervous glances as one by one the Team Pros entered and went in search of their tables. For some of the qualifiers it’s a dream to have the likes of two-time player of the year Daniel Negreanu sit at your table, for others a nightmare.

It wasn’t to be Negreanu’s day though, missing a succession of draws and coming up against stronger hands, by the start of level 3 he had just over five big blinds. He managed to double up but was unluckily dispatched several minutes later when he got it in with {A-}{10-} against Stephen Woodhead's {A-}{9-}. A nine sealed his fate and Kid Poker made an unusually early exit.

One table looked particularly tough, featuring PokerStars Pro Fatima De Melo, PokerStars Team Online Pro Ike Haxton, Full Tilt Ambssador Sin Melin and John Eames. A PokerStars qualifier from Ireland, Tomasz Raniszewski, was the meat in that particular sandwich and though he initially held his own they gradually whittled him down.

Overall it was a good showing from Team PokerStars but many did not make it through the day, including Haxton, his fellow Team Online player Felix Schneiders as well as Team Pros David Williams and Vanessa Rousso. Unfortunately Jason Mercier, who hadn’t been feeling well all day, couldn’t carry on playing after a few hours and had to retire.

Those who will be back for day 2 though include Liv Boeree (59,400), Fatima De Melo (31,100), Leo Margets (30,700), Jake Cody (14,300), Dale Philip (7,700) and Full Tilt Poker Tour Ambassadors Sin Melin (47,300) and Ben Jenkins (26,100).

Barry Greenstein played a patient game and was getting short stacked when his patience paid off getting a double up with aces. Greenstein finished the day on 53,600.

The other Full Tilt Poker Tour Ambassador here today, Martins Adeniya, got fortunate when he took an aggressive line against Chihao Tsang’s nines but survived and ended the day on 30,300.

The prize pool has now been confirmed with 55 places being paid and the winner walking away with the title and a cool £94,090.

The players will be dressing up and making a bee line for the Official Halloween Party at Tahiko Nightclub to dance the night away before returning tomorrow promptly at noon when the action kicks off again. Ion Disabled

Level 8 : 400/800, 100 ante

Joining the action and the button Dainis Budovskis had put in a four-bet to 7,200 preflop against Ion Tronaru. The Romanian called from the big blind to see a {10-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{7-Diamonds} flop.

Tronaru checked and Budovskis bet 7,500. Tronaru check-raised all in for 38,625 and Budovskis looked incredibly pained but made the call after about a minute.

Tronaru: {J-Hearts}{J-Clubs}
Budovskis: {K-Hearts}{K-Spades}

The {3-Clubs} turn changed nothing and neither did the 'Barry Greenstein river' - the {A-Spades}. Budovskis has rocketed up to about 90,000, he's among the chip leaders.

Johnson Flips Well

Level 8 : 400/800, 100 ante

Mitch Johnson is another player doing well in the last level. He just won a flip worth around 40,000 when his {J-Clubs}{J-Spades} hjeld against Gary Blakemore's {A-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds} on a {5-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{6-Clubs}{Q-Clubs} board.

The Lazarus Award Goes to...

Level 8 : 400/800, 100 ante
Peter Barrable
Peter Barrable

In level seven, Peter Barrable had pushed all in with {Q-}{10-} for about 10,000 but ended up losing the all-in showdown to another player. The pair were close in chips and the Irishman assumed he was out until he was called back by the dealer and found he had 175 chips remaining.

Having to put 75 chips into his ante, the other 100 went in with {4-}{3-} where he duly flopped the nut straight and managed to get himself into things.

Next he had {7-}{7-} in a four-way pot where his hand held up which took him back up to about 8,000. A few more shoves then {10-}{10-} holding against {A-}{10-} and now he sits with over 30,000!

Poker is easy.

Go Big or Go Home

Level 8 : 400/800, 100 ante

There is a slightly giddy atmosphere now that we have entered the last level of the day; seven long hours of concentration, swings and roundabouts, good and bad luck. A lot of the action can now be described as either “The hands played themselves.” Or “It was a stack-size question.” Players are surely questioning whether it is worth their time to return tomorrow with a stack smaller than ten big blinds. Take this hand from table 4.

Kenneth Coote opened for 800 and it went round to Gregory Taylor in the small blind who shoved for 8,000. The big blind, Remy Hordan, also went all in for 4,300 and the decision was back on Coote who considered his options. It looked like he had a strong hand but let it go. Taylor turned over {a-Spades}{5-Diamonds} but was in trouble against Hordan’s {a-Clubs}{q-Spades}. A frustrated Taylor bemoaned his fate, “Only ace I’ve had for the last four hours.” He couldn’t moan it in though as the board ran out {8-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}{4-Spades}{2-Clubs} and Hordan doubled up.
