Another Circuit Main Event has begun as Harrah's Atlantic City opened the doors and threw back the blinds on the registration windows in preparation for the $1,500+150 championship ring event. By the time registration closed around 3:00 P.M., 352 players had put up the buyin to get their names on the roster. Sixteen levels came and went with the number on the board steadily trickling downward. It stopped at 71 players at the end of the night, those survivors set to return for Monday's moving day, the push to the final table. When they do return, Tam Ly will be boasting the heaviest bag in the room, stuffing 287,600 chips in there for the overnight soak.
About three-quarters of the East Coast poker scene was eliminated today, it seems. Will "The Thrill" Failla, Chris Reslock, Mike Beasley, Al Riccobono, Adam Lippert, Kyle Bowker, Ronnie Bardah, Will Souther, Matt Brady, Jason Young... out they went, one after another, finally ending with Dwyte Pilgrim's elimination on the final hand of the night.
Those who didn't survive are mostly poised to do well tomorrow. Jeremy Schwartz finished in 16th place at the first WSOPC Regional Championship in Hammond, Indiana, and he's ready for another deep run as his stack of 254,500 puts him in second place. Ari "BodogAri" Engel found himself graduating up the counts steadily all day, spurred on by a few crucial hands. He finished up with 241,400 chips in his bag, putting him in third place behind the chip leaders. Just behind them sits Josh Brikis, whose late-night heater pushed him all the way up to 211,000 at the close of play. Todd Terry bagged up just shy of 180,000, and Matt Glantz is just behind him as well, and there are plenty of other mines left to dodge for the eventual champion.
Speaking of the eventual champion, we're set to get a lot closer to finding him or her tomorrow. The 71 survivors will return here to the Ballroom at 12:00 noon tomorrow, and they'll play down to a final table of nine. We'll be here to bring you all of the action as it unfolds, so don't miss tomorrow's moving day here at the WSOPC Harrah's Atlantic City!
Until then, all that's left is goodnight.
Joanne Monteavaro found herself all in for about 32,000 with against one short-stacked opponent's and another big-stacked opponent's . The board ran out and Monteavaro gets a much needed double up just as Day 1 reached its end.
Action folded to Dave Inselberg in the small blind and he shoved for 43,500. Ari Engel was in the big blind and thought it over for about two minutes before calling.
Inselberg:
Engel:
The board ran out and Engel's ace held up. He now has about 210,000.
Level: 16
Blinds: 1,200/2,400
Ante: 400
We caught up to the action a bit late, but we're trying to catch every bit we can when Jonas Wexler and Ari Engel are playing hands.
On the turn, the board showed , and there was just over 12,000 in the pot. Wexler took his cue to bet 6,600 at the pot, and Engel tanked and called. The filled out the board, and Wexler slowed back down with a check. Engel took a few minutes to debate a bet before checking it back, much to the chagrin of Wexler.
"Augh!" he let out a cry. "You got it." Engel forced him to show his airball before tabling the winning , his ace-high good enough for the pot.
"Were you check-raising the river?" someone at the table asked.
"Ab-so-luuutely," Wexler answered.
"I believe you," Engel said, the two men trading smiles. "That's not a stretch at all."
In the eight seat, some poor amateur was lamenting his plight. "Of course I draw this table. Of course."
We've just stumbled back across Jeremy Schwartz, a name we're familiar with on the Circuit. Schwartz played the $10,000 Midwest Regional Championship at the Southern Indiana stop, working his way into the money and a 16th-place showing.
Schwartz is back on our WSOPC radar now. He's recently been seen with 280,000 chips in front of him, good enough to give him a commanding lead in the tournament with less than 100 players left. Schwartz also found a recent cash here in Atlantic City, finishing in 44th place in the latest WPT event at the Borgata right next door a couple months ago.
Todd Terry just added about 20,000 to his stack when his held up against an opponent's .
The board came down and Terry's pair help up, upping his stack to roughly 195,000.
