Jan Von Halle Has Been Eliminated

But it was the hand before that spelled his doom. Von Halle raised with A-K, had one caller, and after the flop came {2-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{6-Diamonds} he moved in. He was called by a player holding A-3, and when Von Halle didn't catch a King he was down to his last 800 in chips. He was eliminated a few hands later.

The Flush Draw Giveth, and the Flush Draw Taketh Away

Mark Seif spent much of today at or near the top of the leaderboard, thanks in part to two big pots he won when he moved in with flush draws and got there in the end. However, it was a flush draw that didn't hit spelled Seif's end today, as he moved all-in with {2-Clubs}{5-Clubs} after the flop came {K-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{9-Diamonds} and was called by a player with pocket Aces. But this time a club didn't come to give Seif his flush and he was eliminated.

Our New Chip Leader Is . . .

Derek Boice, and how he got there is a twisted little tale. A player on the button raised and Boice, holding {Q-Spades}{J-Clubs}, called. The flop came {J-Hearts}{J-Diamonds}{7-Spades}. A good flop, yes? Well, no -- Boice's opponent had pocket Sevens. Both players checked and when the {4-Hearts} fell on the river Boice check-called a 5,000 bet.

And then came the plot twist -- the {Q-Hearts} spiked on the river. Boice bet 8,000, his opponent naturally moved all in for 25,000 more, and Boice called and showed his bigger boat. And that hand helped boost Boice's stack up to 105,000.

Phil Laak Eliminated

Phil didn't wait.

In his defense, he had A-Q again, raised, and had Tim Goulter set him all-in. Laak called and found he was racing against Goutler's pocket Jacks. Phil didn't improve and his roller-coaster ride has come to an end.

. . . And Then Phil Laak Triples Up

Just as it looked like Phil Laak was out the door, he triples up. A player in the cutoff raised to 2,200, Laak moved all-in on the button for 3,000 in total, and then the player in the small blind made an error and announced raise when he just wanted to call. The player in the cutoff called that raise and the three players checked down a board of {5-Clubs}{6-Spades}{10-Spades}{5-Spades}{K-Hearts}. Laak flipped over A-K and the pair he made on the river was good enough to win the pot, pushing his stack to 13,750.

Hopefully Phil will let us finish this post before he busts out and/or takes the chip lead.

Phil Laak Loses a Big Pot

A player in middle position raised to 2,500 and Phil Laak made it 7,500 to go from the small blind. The original raiser moved all-in and Laak called with A-Q, only to find his opponent held pocket Queens. The big pair held up and Laak slipped to just 3,750 in chips.

Humberto Brenes Cracks Aces To Double Up

Before the flop Humberto Brenes moved all 18,500 of his chips into the middle and Jacob Hirsch called from the cutoff with Aces. Brenes had pocket Jacks, but this has been a charmed World Series for Humberto, and he flopped a Jack to crack Hirsch's bullets. Then, to add insult to injury, Brenes made quads on the turn. And then to add Humberto's own particular spice to the occasion . . . he brought out the Shark. Brenes now has 37,000.
