Julian Powell Eliminated in 14th Place ($44,767)

Julian Powell - 14th Place
Julian Powell - 14th Place
We're getting to that hour of the night where people are sitting around waiting for something, anything to happen. When a player goes all in and another player calls, a crowd immediately congregates around the table, everyone rooting against the short stack. The most recent short stack was Julian Powell.

He raised from late position to 56,000 and was called by Tom Hanlon out of the big blind. Hanlon checked the {6-Clubs} {4-Diamonds} {K-Spades} flop, then called after Powell moved all in for his last 59,000. Hanlon tanked for about a minute or two, then just kind of pushed his chips into the pot in a very disgruntled manner. Powell may have wished he didn't.

Powell: {A-Hearts} {7-Hearts} {8-Diamonds} {9-Clubs}
Hanlon: {J-Diamonds} {10-Clubs} {9-Hearts} {4-Spades}

Hanlon called Powell's all in with bottom pair, and was ahead! The turn {3-Hearts} completed the rainbow and missed both players. Hanlon hit two pair on the river with the {10-Diamonds} to eliminate Powell in 14th place. Powell will collect $44,767 for his efforts.

Hanlon's call prompted some discussion at the table after the hand. Hanlon felt he was priced in to call the flop bet once he called the preflop raise.

"Here Comes Crocky"

Billy "The Croc" Argyros
Billy "The Croc" Argyros
Billy "The Croc" Argyros raised to 56,000, and Jimmy Tran came along with him to the heads-up flop.

It brought {Q-Diamonds} {8-Diamonds} {5-Hearts}. The Croc bet 100,000 and Tran came back with a raise to 220,000, enough to put Argyros all in. He obliged, moving the rest of his chips forward, and the two players tabled their hands:

Argyros: {K-Diamonds} {Q-Clubs} {10-Diamonds} {9-Diamonds}
Tran: {K-Clubs} {Q-Spades} {8-Spades} {6-Clubs}

Argyros was behind, but still had plenty of chances to catch up. The dealer came through for him, presenting the {9-Hearts} on the turn to give him a better two pair. The {6-Spades} on the river was useless to the two men, and Argyros doubled up through Tran.

As the hand was playing out, Billy The Croc was standing up behind his chair, pleading with the deck. When he finally secured the pot, he broke out into a bout of self-promotion in that cheery Aussie accent.

"Yes! Scoop it, scoop it! Double, double... Here comes Crocky, you're all in trouble!"

A few minutes later, The Croc was still at it. "C'mon Jimmy, double me up again, huh?" Jimmy Tran seems less than thrilled with the proceedings at his table.

Kenneth Matsson Eliminated in 15th Place ($44,767)

We pick this hand up on the flop, where Marty Smyth and Kenneth Matsson are heads up and about to build a big pot. The dealer spreads {2-Clubs} {9-Clubs} {9-Hearts}, and both players check.

The turn brings the {K-Hearts}. Smyth checks, and Matsson bets out 60,000. Smyth raises it up, making it 208,000 to play. Smyth makes the call and is all in for 200,000. The cards are shown down:

Matsson: {A-Hearts} {A-Diamonds} {J-Hearts} {7-Spades}
Smyth: {3-Diamonds} {7-Hearts} {8-Hearts} {9-Diamonds}

Smyth was leading when the money went in with his triple nines. Matsson's best hope was to catch a flush card. He did just that when the {3-Hearts} ripped off. Unfortunately for him, that was also the full house card for Smyth, and Matsson couldn't beat that. Smyth made his nines full of threes, and Kenneth Matsson heads to the exit in 15th place, earning $44,767.

Status Update

There's not a whole lot going on in our little corner of the Amazon Room. Most of the players are stone silent at the table, with the only conversation coming from rail birds who are a few drinks in and enjoying themselves. Even the floor staff are feeling underutilized. One of them has built a pyramid out of several dozen empty chip racks in the center of an unused table. Unfortunately, our photographers went home hours ago so we can't provide a photo of the pyramid.

Guillaume Patry Eliminated in 16th Place ($35,814)

Guillaume Patry - 16th Place
Guillaume Patry - 16th Place
It took an hour, but we have our 16th-place finisher. Marty Smyth raised from early position to 32,000. Action folded to Guillaume Patry in the small blind, who reraised all in for about 65,000. Smyth peeked back at his cards, then said, "Yeah, yeah. I call, I call."

Smyth opened double-suited jacks, {J-Hearts} {J-Spades} {7-Spades} {2-Hearts}. Patry showed {A-Clubs} {J-Clubs} {10-Diamonds} {3-Hearts}. Neither player could make anything out of a board of {5-Diamonds} {8-Clubs} {2-Diamonds} {Q-Diamonds} {K-Hearts}, so Smyth's unimproved jacks were the winner

Patry will collect $35,814 in prize money.

Jetten Grinded Down a Bit

Peter Jetten raises from late position, making it 40,000 to play. The Grinder is the only caller, with position in the cutoff seat.

The flop comes out {6-Hearts} {J-Hearts} {8-Spades}, and both players check. The turn comes the {A-Hearts}. Jetten fires out 60,000 chips, and Mizrachi calls. The river is the {5-Diamonds}, and again both players check.

Mizrachi turns over {A-Spades} {7-Spades} {6-Diamonds} {4-Diamonds}, and it's the winner.

Arieh Stumbles

From late position, Shawn Buchanan opens with a raise to 42,000. Josh Arieh calls from the button, and action comes to Jimmy Tran in the big blind. He reraises to 126,000, which is enough to force Buchanan out. Arieh, however, is in it to the flop.

The first three cards off are {2-Clubs} {2-Diamonds} {Q-Spades}. Tran bets all in for 110,000, and Arieh folds. With bunches of chips changing hands, Arieh has dropped to 420,000 -- his lowest count since play began early this afternoon. Jimmy Tran, meanwhile, has upped himself back into contention, now sitting on 580,000 in chips.

You Knew It Was Coming

Play has ground to a very predictable halt now that we are one table away from the final table and the cameras are rolling. Players know that they are a few bustouts away from a televised final table in a very prestigious tournament. Better pop those greenies. We may be here for a while.
