Carlos Mortensen Eliminated in 3rd Place ($89,342)

Carlos Mortensen - 3rd Place
Carlos Mortensen - 3rd Place
Back onto Omaha-8 and after a series of raises, Carlos Mortensen was all in preflop against Ming Lee.

Mortensen: {10-Clubs}{A-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}
Lee: {A-Clubs}{K-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds}

The board ran out {Q-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}{4-Clubs} and Lee makes kings full of fours to take it down and eliminate Mortensen from the tournament, after a great run, in 3rd place for $89,342 in prize money.

The players are now taking a quick bathroom break before heads-up play commences.

Mortensen Chops to Stay Alive

Carlos Mortensen was all in by fifth street against Phil Ivey who ended up making a powerful ace-high flush and eight-low, but somehow Mortensen survived:

Ivey: {8-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{A-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{5-Clubs}
Mortensen: {K-Clubs}{J-Hearts}{A-Hearts}{5-Spades}{6-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{9-Hearts}

Mortensen makes a slightly bigger flush to take the high as Ivey takes the low.

Mortensen Cracks

These players have been playing some very intense, high level poker over the last couple of hours. We may have just seen our first cracks appearing as the ultra-aggressive Phil Ivey and Carlos Mortensen just tangled in a huge Stud-8 hand.

Mortensen completed and Ivey made the call on third street. Ivey then led out on fourth and Mortensen made the call. Fifth street saw Ivey lead again and this time Mortensen raised. Ivey paused for a moment and made the call. On sixth street both players checked before Ivey fired out a bet on the river. Mortensen quickly raised and Ivey made a fairly casual, quick call.

With all the action you'd expect to be shown two monster boards. Here's what we saw:

Mortensen: (X-X-X) {7-Spades}{10-Hearts}{6-Spades}{3-Diamonds}
Ivey: ({9-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{4-Hearts}) {8-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}{A-Diamonds}

Mortensen tapped the table in resignation once called and Ivey revealed his pair of nines. Mortensen stood and re-checked his cards once more but couldn't find a hand to beat him and mucked his cards.

A huge swing in Ivey's direction sees him move up to nearly two million chips, with Mortensen now on life support.

Half Empty or Half Full?

Ming Lee raised the small blind and Carlos Mortensen called in the big blind. They saw a flop of {K-Spades}{5-Hearts}{4-Spades}. Lee checked to Mortensen, who fired out with a bet. Lee made the call.

The turn was the {7-Clubs} and that's when it got a little crazy. Lee checked, Mortensen bet and Lee raised. Mortensen then reraised and Lee slowed down with a flat call.

The river was the {J-Spades} and both players checked it down.

Lee tabled {6-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}{8-Spades} for the straight to the eight, as Mortensen took the low with {A-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}. Chop, chop!

Set Over Set for Ivey

Carlos Mortensen raised from the small blind and Phil Ivey called in the big blind.

The flop was {9-Spades}{3-Spades}{A-Diamonds} and Mortensen led out with a bet which Ivey called. The turn was the {8-Spades} and again Mortensen fired. Ivey made the quick call and the {2-Spades} fell on the river. Mortensen fired a third shell and Ivey looked him up.

Mortensen tabled {A-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{2-Clubs}{K-Hearts} for a rivered set of deuces without a low, as Ivey revealed {9-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{J-Diamonds}{3-Clubs} for a bigger set. Ivey takes it down to extend his chip lead, to 1.58 million with Mortensen back to 860,000.

Lee Loses Another

Ming Lee is now down to 475,000 after betting the flop, calling the turn, but then folding on the river to Carlos Mortensen with the board reading {10-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}.

He'll need to get things moving in the right direction sometime soon as both his opponents now sit with over one million chips.

Mortensen Wheels It In

Carlos Mortensen
Carlos Mortensen
Carlos Mortensen completed, and fired bets on fourth, sixth and seventh streets against Ming Lee who made the call.

Mortensen: ({4-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}) {2-Hearts}{A-Spades}{9-Clubs}{7-Spades}
Lee: (X-X-X) {2-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{10-Hearts}

Mortensen had made a wheel and scooped a nice pot. Lee is down to 580,000 and under some pressure once again as Mortensen gets back to 875,000.

Lee Fights On

Ming Lee
Ming Lee
After Ming Lee and Phil Ivey chopped a couple of Omaha-8 pots, Lee finally got the better of the six-time bracelet winner when he called him down on a board of {2-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}.

Lee was the only one to open his cards, showing {6-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{4-Hearts}{9-Clubs} for the straight and best low to scoop the pot. Lee is trying to get himself back into this contest against two of the world's best players. He has 715,000 chips.

Ivey Heats Up

Back to Omaha-8 now and Carlos Mortensen opened with a raise from the button with Phil Ivey calling in the small blind.

They checked the flop of {5-Hearts}{2-Clubs}{10-Clubs} before Ivey fired at the {2-Spades} turn. Mortensen called and they checked the {Q-Spades} on the river.

Ivey tabled {K-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs} for queens and deuces to take it down. A nice little rush for Ivey as he's back in control with 1.48 million chips.
