Sands Turns to Gold With Suited Hammer

Hammer time!
Hammer time!
After several players limped in, David Sands limped on the button, the small blind completed and the big blind checked his option.

The flop came down {7-Spades} {4-Diamonds} {2-Spades}. The small blind led out for 4,600, one of the EP players raised to 9,400, and Sands three-bet to 16,000. The small blind folded and one of the EP players called. The turn came the {8-Diamonds} and the EP player checked to Sands, who bet 30,000. The EP player called all in.

Sands turned over {7-Clubs} {2-Clubs} (aka "the suited hammer") for two pair, crushing his opponent's {10-Diamonds} {10-Hearts} . The river was the {5-Clubs} and Sands took down the substantial pot, increasing his stack to 150,000.

No More Mercier

We walked past Jason Mercier's table as he was standing up to leave.

When he walked away, the table shared the details of his bust out. With a board reading {2-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{5-Clubs}, Mercier got his stack in the middle from the big blind and got called by the cutoff.

Mercier showed {A-?}{J-?} while his opponent held {A-Hearts}{K-Hearts}. The {10-Hearts} on the river brought the flush and ended Mercier's day.

Gavin Smith Doubles

A player in late position raised to 1,500 and then Gavin Smith reraised all in for 12,025 total. The original raiser called.

Showdown
Smith: {A-Hearts} {K-Spades}
Opponent: {A-Diamonds} {J-Diamonds}

The board ran out {Q-Diamonds} {Q-Spades} {6-Hearts} {9-Spades} {2-Clubs} for keep Smith's hand in the lead, doubling him up to 25,300.

Hedlund Collects a Scalp

Peter Hedlund wasn't too concerned about taking a 15,000-chip hit if he lost a recent all-in confrontation. Hedlund was on the wrong side preflop, taking {A-Hearts} {8-Hearts} up against a short stack's {Q-Diamonds} {Q-Clubs}. But Hedlund caught his ace on a flop of {10-Diamonds} {A-Clubs} {6-Spades} and then never looked back. Blanks on the turn and river ended Hedlund's opponent's day and increased the chatty Swede's count to 67,000.

Garrett Gets Aggressive

An early position player raised to 1,300, Brad Garrett called from middle position, the button called and the small blind called.

The flop came down {Q-Clubs} {7-Spades} {3-Spades}. The small blind bet 2,400, the EP player folded, Garrett raised to 5,000, the button folded and the small blind called.

The turn came the {9-Spades}. The small blind checked and Garrett fired out another 5,000. It was enough to chase his opponent away and he took down the pot, chipping up to 44,000.

Seeing Less of Red

With the Brasilia Room already done for the day, the floor has begun breaking tables in the red section in order to get cash games up and running.

With about 15 minutes left before the next break, nearly half of the day's starting tournament tables have now been broken with players scattered throughout the rest of the Amazon Room.

FBT Can Do No Wrong

It's been a good summer for Greg "FBT" Mueller and so far the Main Event has been an excellent capper.

First we saw Mueller limp involved in a heads-up pot that had been raised preflop by the small blind. On a flop of {A-Spades} {4-?} {A-Diamonds} the small blind moved in for his last 5,875. It was an easy call for Mueller with {A-Hearts} {8-Clubs}. The small blind showed down {K-Hearts} {K-Clubs} and did not improve.

A few hands later, Mueller was the player in the blinds for a heads-up flop of {A-Clubs} {K-Hearts} {9-Clubs}. He checked and called a bet of 3,250 from his lone opponent. When the turn brought a third club, the {2-Clubs}, Mueller led into his opponent for 9,000. That player raised to 24,000 and practically before those chips were even in the middle Mueller had reraised all in. His opponent called with {A-Hearts} {Q-Hearts}, a pair of aces. Mueller showed {Q-Clubs} {10-Clubs} for a made flush and a lock hand.

Those two pots have pushed Mueller's count to 181,000.

Shaun Deeb Sends a Player Home

Shaun Deeb
Shaun Deeb
Vitaly Lunkin opened the pot for a 1,400 raise and two players called behind. Shaun Deeb was on the button and three bet to 6,200. The small blind folded and the big blind moved all in for 24,950. Action folded back around to Deeb who made the call.

Big blind: {A-Diamonds} {10-Hearts}
Deeb: {K-Diamonds} {J-Hearts}

The board came {J-Diamonds} {7-Spades} {6-Spades} {Q-Diamonds} {Q-Spades} giving Shaun Deeb the best hand with queens and jacks, king kicker.

He eliminates his opponent and moves to 75,000.

Sexton Slips.. But Just A Little

Well, Vince... I felt I had to call in that spot...
Well, Vince... I felt I had to call in that spot...
Mike Sexton just doubled up a short-stacked opponent, who shoved for 10,825 pre-flop with {J-Hearts} {J-Clubs}. Sexton looked him up with {5-Spades} {5-Hearts}, but the jacks held on the {K-Diamonds} {J-Spades} {3-Hearts} {8-Hearts} {K-Hearts} board.

Sexton's stack is still healthy, though at 66,600.
