Manuel Labandeira Eliminated in 44th Place ($178,857)

Manuel Labandeira - 44th Place
Manuel Labandeira - 44th Place
Ludovic Lacay began the hand by raising to 150,000 from under the gun. It folded to Manuel Labandeira in the cutoff. Labandeira hadn't seen Lacay's raise, and so tried to raise to 180,000, but his bet was declared just a call. That led to both blinds -- Steven Begleiter (small) and Jesse Haabak (big) -- coming along as well.

The flop came {A-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}. It checked around to Labandeira who bet 400,000. Begleiter folded, then Haabak check-raised all in for 1.22 million. Lacay folded, Labandeira called with his remaining chips, and Begleiter got out of the way.

Haabak showed {A-Clubs}{5-Hearts} for two pair, and Labandeira {A-Spades}{J-Clubs} for aces. The turn was the {Q-Spades} and the river the {3-Hearts}, and Labandeira is out in 44th place.

Dennis Phillips Eliminated in 45th Place ($178,857)

Dennis Phillips shakes some hands as he leaves the Main Event.
It was not a lucky day for Dennis Phillips. He had a mini-disaster earlier when he thought he was going to get some action on his aces but Jeff Duvall mucked.

More recently, Phillips raised preflop to 450,000 from the button after Antoine Saout opened for 165,000 and Francois Balmigere called. Phillips' re-raise folded Saout but got the opposite reaction from Balmigere, who moved all in. Phillips called all in for less. Hands please, gentlemen!

Balmigere: {A-Spades} {k-Spades}
Phillips: {A-Diamonds} {K-Diamonds}

Each player had suited Big Slick, which was a problem for Phillips on a flop of {4-Spades} {K-Clubs} {6-Spades}. The turn {10-Hearts} was a safe card; Phillips just needed to fade spades one more time to remain in the tournament. Alas, the river was the {5-Spades}, filling Balmigere's spade flush and knocking Phillips out of the tournament in spectacularly cruel fashion.

Hung Pham Eliminated in 46th Place ($138,568)

Hung Pham - 46th Place
Hung Pham - 46th Place
Ryan Fair came into the pot with a raise to 150,000. Three seats over, Hung Pham put in a reraise, making it 550,000 to skate. The table folded back around to Fair, and he moved all in for another 1,585,000 on top. Pham's stack was very close to Fair's, and he waited patiently while the dealer counted it down. Learning that he had the covering stack by just 65,000 chips, Pham made the call to put his opponent at risk.

Showdown
Fair: {10-Spades} {10-Diamonds}
Pham: {K-Spades} {K-Diamonds}

"He slowrolled me," said Fair, turning back to chat with his cheering section. "He had kings and he actually thought about that call... Oh well, maybe I'll get lucky."

It was a bit of dramatic foreshadowing as the dealer prepared to deal out the flop. Right in the door came the {10-Hearts}, drawing a big reaction from the spectators with just that one card still showing. In the end, the board rolled out {8-Hearts} {9-Clubs} {10-Hearts} {5-Diamonds} {9-Diamonds}, and Fair did indeed get lucky. His tens full were the winner, earning him a massive double up. He's approaching 5,000,000 chips now, leaving Pham with that 65,000 funny money to play with.

*****

On the next hand, Pham would be all in before the flop for 55,000 after paying an ante. Three players called, and the flop brought {8-Diamonds} {6-Spades} {2-Clubs}. Antonio Esfandiari bet out 150,000, and that was enough to put him heads up with the all-in Pham.

"Two pair," said The Magician, turning over {8-Spades} {2-Spades}. Pham tabled {A-Clubs} {6-Hearts} for a pair of his own. The {2-Diamonds} on the turn filled up Antonio, and Pham would need to pull a six to stay alive. The river was a scary but disappointing {5-Hearts}, and that's the end of the line for Hung Pham. After grinding out the short stack to perfection all day, he'll walk away with nearly $140,000.

Rodman Doesn't Kill Phil, But Does Score a Hit

Blair Rodman after winning hand versus Phil Ivey
Blair Rodman after winning hand versus Phil Ivey
Marc McLaughlin raised to 150,000 from middle position, Phil Ivey called from the button, and Blair Rodman, co-author of the poker strategy text Kill Phil, called as well from the small blind.

The flop came {4-Spades}{2-Hearts}{6-Clubs}. Rodman and McLaughlin checked, and Ivey bet 300,000. Rodman then check-raised all in for a little over a million. McLaughlin folded, and Ivey called.

Ivey showed {9-Clubs}{9-Diamonds} for the overpair, but Rodman had flopped a set with his {6-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}. The turn was the {8-Clubs} and the river the {5-Diamonds}, and Rodman now has 2.55 million. Ivey is at 8.6 million.

Vedes Can't Reel in Lacay

Christopher Bach limped in from UTG, Tommy Vedes made it 230,000 to go from middle position, Ludovic Lacay called on the button and Bach called as well.

The flop came down {5-Diamonds} {4-Diamonds} {3-Diamonds}. Bach checked, Vedes bet 440,000, Lacay called and Bach folded. Vedes checked the {9-Spades} on the turn and Lacay checked behind. The river was the {8-Clubs}. Vedes checked again and Lacay checked behind.

Vedes turned over {Q-Spades} {Q-Diamonds}, unable to extract any more chips out of Lacay on the turn and river.

Lacay Never Bluffs

Tommy Vedes opened for 165,000 and Ludovic Lacay called from the small blind.

Lacay checked the {9-Spades} {6-Hearts} {3-Hearts} flop, Vedes bet 225,000 and Lacay called. Both players checked the {4-Diamonds} on the turn. The river was the {7-Spades} and Lacay fired out 350,000. Vedes made a reluctant fold.

"Show the bluff," demanded Vedes.

"I never bluff," quipped Lacay.

More Action on Table 5

Billy Kopp was at it again on Blue #5. This time his opponents were Marc McLaughlin and Phil Ivey. McLaughlin opened preflop for 150,000. Kopp called from the button and Ivey called from the small blind to a flop of {3-Spades} {10-Diamonds} {2-Diamonds}. Ivey checked to McLaughlin. He fired out 250,000, a bet that was called only by Kopp.

With Ivey out of the way, action proceeded to the {9-Spades} turn. McLaughlin, out of position, opted to check-call 475,000 chips from Kopp. When the river fell {7-Clubs}, McLaughlin checked a second time. Kopp pushed out 13 "Hawaiian Flowers" -- those lavender chips that are worth 100,000 each. That, apparently, was too much for McLaughlin to call. He folded.

Kopp's back to 15.5 million as a result of that pot.
