Sad Day for Smith

There was a raise to 75 in mid position and Gavin Smith, already short-stacked after, "Missing draw after draw," according to tablemate Kara Scott, called in the cutoff.

They went heads up to the {10-Spades} {9-Hearts} {9-Spades} flop and the original raiser bet out 325. Smith pushed for 775 total, and his opponent made the call.

Opponent: {a-Hearts} {10-Clubs}
The soon-to-be-busted Smith: {8-Hearts} {10-Hearts}

No joy from the {3-Spades} turn or {6-Spades} river, and Smith is no longer in contention for this particular bracelet.

Call to Action

Four players, including Vanessa Rousso, together saw a flop of {4-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{A-Hearts}. The big blind checked, and Rousso bet 300 from early position. That brought a fold, then a raise to 900 from the cutoff.

The table awaited a response from the big blind, who initially appeared to be studying the situation. Then it became apparent he was studying something else -- his phone. Rousso politely got his attention to let him know it was his turn to act, and he quickly folded. While he appeared to consider making a call, Rousso decided she wouldn’t and let her hand go.

Rousso has about 3,200 at present as we near the end of the first level.

Cowboys for the Cowboy

A player sitting in the cutoff seat opened with a 3x raise to 75, and it folded to “Amarillo Slim” Preston who raised to 400 from the big blind. The cutoff called.

The flop came {3-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}. Preston looked out from beneath the brim of his familiar cowboy hat at the board, then checked. His opponent checked as well. The turn brought another baby -- {3-Spades} -- and a bet of 600 from Preston. The player in the cutoff called.

The river was the {6-Diamonds}. Slim once more bet 600, and was called again. Preston turned over {K-Spades}{K-Diamonds}, and his opponent mucked. Preston has chipped up to 5,500 here in the early going.

Sica Seeks Info, Finds It

Over at Mike Sica’s table, there was 600 in the middle and three hearts -- {3-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{8-Hearts} -- on the board. The turn brought yet another heart, the {J-Hearts}. Sica bet 325 from the cutoff, and his lone opponent responded with a raise to 1,000.

“What makes me think my flush is no good?” asked Sica to anyone who would listen, showing his {2-Hearts} before casting his cards into the muck.

Sica presently sits with 2,700.

Who's in the Pavilion Room?

Well, who isn't in the Pavilion Room?

Just a quick sweep revealed a smattering of extremely well-known faces among the 2,000 or so runners who showed up on time.

So far we've spotted Brock Parker, Hevad Khan, Tom McEvoy, Humberto Brenes and Lex Veldhuis. We have casually strolled by Kara Scott and Gavin Smith sharing a table and pretended we weren't impressed. We have witnessed Kathy Liebert, Irish Open champion James Mitchell, EPT Berlin champion Kevin MacPhee and a clean-shaven Andy Black, all looking as though the noon start was a shade early for them. And bear in mind that all the really cool kids like to show up some time in level 2...

Hinkle Suffers Early Hit

Following a {Q-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{6-Spades} flop, Blair Hinkle bet 225 from middle position, and his opponent in the cutoff called. The turn was the {K-Clubs}. This time Hinkle bet 500, and again his opponent stuck around.

The river brought the {Q-Hearts}. Hinkle checked, and his opponent shoved all in for 1,375. Hinkle tanked, then let it go. He’s down to 2,200 from the 3,000-chip starting stack.
