Rivet Leads the Pack Heading Into Day 3

Level 18 : 5,000/10,000, 0 ante
Chip Leader - Guillaume Rivet
Chip Leader - Guillaume Rivet

After eighteen hours of grueling poker over two days, Guillaume Rivet has amassed a 809,000-chip stack and leads the pack heading into Day 3 of Event #11: $10,000 Omaha Hi-Low Split-8 or Better Championship.

The day started with 164 hopefuls and ended with just 22 survivors. Interestingly, the three players who topped the Day 1 charts are still alive. Fabrizio Gonzalez (147,000), Eric Buchman (76,000) and Guillaume Rivet were all able to successfully navigate their way through this tough field, and make it to Day 3. Conversely, Mikhail Smirnov, Christopher George, Marco Johnson, Allen Bari and James Dempsey were unable to protect their big stacks, and all fell short of the money. Other notables who fell short include PokerStars Team Pro's Daniel Negreanu, Bertrand Grospellier, Vanessa Selbst, Eugene Katchalov and Pat Pezzin.

Speaking of money, Jason Mercier was the first to cash, finishing 27th despite only having 11,000 in chips (1.37 bbs) during the money bubble. The title of "Bubble Boy" was instead given to Dan "djk123" Kelly, who was scooped by Freddy Deeb. Deeb made a wheel with {A-Diamonds} {3-Spades} {5-Spades} {9-Spades} on a {2-Hearts} {4-Spades} {9-Clubs} {Q-Diamonds} {5-Clubs} board, sending the sophomore Kelly home with no money.

Mercier wasn't the only person to cash today - Amnon Filippi, Raymond Dehkargani and Damjan Radanov all exited after the bubble burst.

Day 3 resumes tomorrow at 3 p.m. right here in the Amazon Room. Rivet will look to protect his chip lead in pursuit of his first bracelet, while the likes of Buchman, Shaun Deeb, Richard Ashby, Steve Billirakis, Josh Arieh, Michael Chow and Mike Sexton will be biting at his heels looking to add another bracelet to their collection.

Until then, goodnight from the Rio!

We've reached the point in the night where the clock is paused and a card is drawn. Freddy Deeb was given the honors tonight, and we hope it's the last time they let him draw. He pulled the unlucky seven out, and we'll play that many more hands at each table before bagging up for the night.

Radanov Goes With Kings

Level 18 : 5,000/10,000, 0 ante
Damjan Radanov
Damjan Radanov

Damjan Radanov was very short on chips when he found a hand to commit to. It was {K-Clubs} {K-Spades} {A-Spades} {4-Clubs}, and he was up against Mikael Thuritz and his {A-Clubs} {J-Clubs} {9-Clubs} {5-Spades}.

The board came {Q-Hearts} {5-Clubs} {8-Spades} {10-Hearts} {5-Diamonds}, and the turn card was unkind to Radanov. Thuritz makes his straight to earn the knockout, pushing his stack up to 320,000 in the process.

Taylor Doubles Through Arieh

Brendan Taylor was all in on the turn with the board reading {9-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{10-Spades}. Josh Arieh had him at risk, and here's how the hands looked:

Taylor: {a-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{2-Spades}{3-Hearts}
Arieh: {a-Hearts}{a-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}{5-Clubs}

Taylor would've been happy with just a low card for a chop, but the {3-Spades} peeled on the river, giving him two pair and the entire pot.

Mercier Put Out of His Misery

Level 18 : 5,000/10,000, 0 ante
Jason Mercier - 27th place
Jason Mercier - 27th place

Under the gun, Jason Mercier got his last ~13,000 into the pot with {4-Clubs} {5-Hearts} {7-Hearts} {8-Clubs}. Max Steinberg was the only caller, showing down {5-Clubs} {6-Clubs} {10-Clubs} {J-Diamonds} from the big blind.

The board ran out {10-Diamonds} {A-Clubs} {3-Hearts} {10-Hearts} {3-Clubs}, and Mercier can't find anything there. Trip tens give the pot and the knockout to Steinberg, and Mercier is out in 27th place with the first paycheck of this event.
