Ivey Scoops with Straight

Level 7

Stud Hi-Lo

Phil Ivey was all in for his last 200 following a complete from David Williams, a raise from Allen Kessler and a call from Scott Seiver. Williams also called before betting fourth only to have Kessler raise. Seiver called, as did Williams before he bet out on fifth. Kessler raised and Seiver folded as Williams made the call. Both players checked sixth before Williams check-called a Kessler bet on seventh.

Seiver: {X-}{X-} / {6-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{6-Spades} (folded on fifth)
Ivey: {X-}{X-} / {6-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{4-Spades} / {X-}
Williams: {X-}{X-} / {Q-Spades}{J-Spades}{A-Diamonds}{8-Hearts} / {X-}
Kessler: {X-}{X-} / {6-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{A-Spades}{J-Hearts} / {X-}

Williams tabled his {Q-Hearts}{J-Clubs}{10-Clubs} to win the high in the side pot while Kessler won the low in the side pot with his {A-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}. However it was Ivey's {7-Spades}{3-Spades}{5-Diamonds} for a straight and a better low that would see him scoop the main pot to stay alive.

The Defending Champ is Gone

Level 7
David "Bakes" Baker
David "Bakes" Baker

David "Bakes" Baker could not be stopped in this event last year as he plowed through a 178-player field (it was a $10,000 buy-in last year) to win $451,779 and his second gold bracelet. Unfortunately things went the total opposite for the defending champ here today.

Every time we checked in with Baker his stack only seemed to dwindle. The next thing we know, he was gone. We didn't catch his elimination hand, and when we asked Scott Clements if he knew what happened he indicated it was fairly uneventful.

"He ran bad and busted early," Clements said sympathetically. "He basically lost every hand he player, and it's not the easiest table."

Indeed, in addition to Clements, the table included Greg Mueller and Mark Gregorich. Oh, and Chad Brown sat down to replace the departed Bakes.

Meanwhile, Matt Glantz was also eliminated from the tournament.

Tong and Hellmuth Chop Shak's Money

Level 7

Omaha Hi-Lo

Kristopher Tong raised to 1,000 from middle position and both Phil Hellmuth and Dan Shak made the call from the blinds.

Tong bet out on every street of the {A-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{8-Spades}{A-Spades} board with Hellmuth and Shak check-calling each time.

Tong tabled his {A-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}{6-Clubs}{4-Diamonds} for a straight while Hellmuth tabled his {Q-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{3-Spades}{2-Diamonds} for the nut low. Shak flashed his {A-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} and mucked while Hellmuth and Tong chopped the pot.

Two Pots Keep Ivey in the Hunt

Level 8

Omaha Hi-Lo

Just before the level went up, Phil Ivey was involved in two Omaha Hi-Lo hands that saw him commit his paltry stack.

In the first, the big blind bet a {q-Spades}{q-Spades}{7-Diamonds} flop, Scott Seiver called and Ivey called off his last 100 from the button. Seiver proceeded to call bets on both the {6-Spades} turn and {3-Hearts} river before showing {a-Hearts}{q-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{k-Hearts}. The big blind revealed the {a-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{k-Spades}{8-Clubs} and he and Seiver chopped the side. Ivey then tabled the {q-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}{a-Clubs}{7-Clubs} for trip queens and half the main pot.

Not long after, we found Ivey all in and three other players in the hand with a board reading {a-Diamonds}{k-Spades}{j-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{j-Spades}. Allen Kessler led out with a bet on the river and the two players in between him and Ivey quickly folded.

"Good game," Seiver told Ivey knowing that Kessler only bet big hands. Sure enough, Kessler tabled the {j-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{2-Hearts} for rivered trips. Without saying a words Ivey rolled over the {a-Spades}{a-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{6-Hearts} for a full house.

"Ivey just wakes up with aces," a player said in disbelief.

"How much do you have?" Ivey then whispered to Seiver.

"4,400," was the response.

"Me too," Ivey said.

Ivey and Seiver Bust

Level 8
Scott Seiver
Scott Seiver

Stud

"Hey PokerNews. Ivey and Seiver are all in." stated Allen Kessler towards the PokerNews blogging desk.

Rushing over to the table to see what was happening, we found Ivey and Seiver all in for their last few thousand.

Ivey started with {Q-Hearts}{4-Hearts} / {7-Hearts}{6-Spades}{7-Spades}{4-Spades} while Seiver had a pair of queens. The opponent that had them both covered had a dominating {K-Spades}{K-Clubs} / {K-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}.

Seiver mucked his hand knowing he was drawing dead on seventh while Ivey's opponent flipped over an ace to leave Ivey drawing to a seven or four. Unfortunately for Ivey he caught the {10-Clubs} and was headed to the rail alongside Seiver.

Shak 0 for 1; Other Late Night Eliminations

Level 8

Today marked the start of the World Series of Poker for Dan Shak, who was playing in his first event of the summer. Shak got a good night's worth of play, but he will not be advancing to Day 2. We missed his elimination hand, but we can confirm that Shak has been eliminated with about 15 minute remaining in the night.
