King Leah

Level 10 : 800/1,600, 0 ante

After a player opened for a raise from under the gun, Mike Leah made it two bets to play from the small blind, and his opponent flatted to see the flop fall {a-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{9-Hearts}.

Leah led out for a bet on the flop and was called, and the action repeated on the {k-Diamonds} turn.

When the {10-Diamonds} completed the board on the river, Leah led out once more, and he watched his opponent cut out a stack to raise it up. Leah was not impressed, however, making it three bets to continue, and the other player simply called.

Leah rolled over the {K-Hearts}{K-Clubs} for a set on the turn, and with this large pot he moved into the upper echelon of the current chip counts.

Calvin Anderson raised under the gun and Mori Eskandani called out of the big blind.

On the {10-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{5-Spades} flop, Eskandani check-called a bet, and both players checked the {7-Spades} turn.

Eskandani checked for a third time on the {6-Spades} river, and he called a bet to go to a showdown. When Anderson revealed the {a-Spades}{8-Hearts} for just one pair, however, Eskandani mucked quickly mucked his hand.

No Limit Soldiers

Level 9 : 600/1,200, 0 ante

With below average stacks to start play today, bracelet winners Barry Shulman and David Chiu knew they needed to make a few early moves to put themselves in position for a deep run.

Unfortunately, we just watched both players make those moves unsuccessfully, with both Shulman and Chiu and crippled after folding to big bets on the river.

First, Shulman bet the {8-Spades}{10-Spades}{9-Hearts} flop and he was called in one spot. After firing away again on the {a-Clubs} turn, Shulman then called a raise to see the river, but he check-folded quickly to a bet, and his opponent flashed a straight.

Next, David Chiu got a few bets in on the {2-Spades}{q-Spades}{k-Clubs} flop, and two players came along for the ride. The {7-Spades} on the turn was checked down, but Chiu was forced out by a bet on the {9-Diamonds} river.

With the losses, both of these pros left themselves with very little wiggle room, and unless a few double-ups occur in quick succession, we expect to be writing their tournament obituaries shortly.

During our first lap around the Pavilion's White section, where this tournament's restart is being held due to the Big One for One Drop's spillover, we noticed Eric Froehlich making his way out of the tournament floor.

While we missed the bustout hand, a seat card sitting where "E-Fro's" stack used to be told the tale.

Day 2 of Event #48 ($2,500 Limit Hold'em Six-Handed) Has Arrived!

Paul Mattioda Enters Day 2 as the Chip Leader, and the Circuit Grinder is Hoping to Make a Splash on the Big Stage Here Today
Paul Mattioda Enters Day 2 as the Chip Leader, and the Circuit Grinder is Hoping to Make a Splash on the Big Stage Here Today

Yesterday saw the World Series of Poker return to its roots, with the $2,500 Limit Hold'em tournament bringing players back to the days when a structured betting game was the predominant variant in poker. With 343 runners making their way to the Brasilia Room for along day of limit action, and this field represented a significant increase over the 302 players who entered the event last year.

One player who found himself in both of those fields was Ronnie Bardah, who took down the crown in 2012, along with a gold bracelet and a $182,088 first prize. Bardah was in the house yesterday hoping to defend his title, and after bagging up an above average stack of 30,200 to begin play today, he has positioned himself perfectly to attempt the rarest of feats here at the WSOP: a title defense.

Bardah has work to do in terms of catching the unofficial chip leader, however, as circuit grinder Paul Mattioda emerged from the fray with 57,900 at his disposal. Mattioda will be joined by pros Marco Johnson (46,600), Jon Turner (43,800), Tom Schneider (38,000), David "Bakes" Baker (35,800) on the leaderboard, while 2009 Main Event champion Joe Cada (20,400) is lurking with a slightly below average stack.

The play today promises to be action packed, as the bets get bigger and every street presents an opportunity to extract value. Check out the PokerNews Daily Update video, presented by the sensational Sarah Grant, and when you're finished keep it right here throughout the day for continuous coverage live from the floor of the Rio, as Event #45 ($2,500 Limit Hold'em Six-Handed) continues.
