Smith Picks One Up Before Break

Level 2 : 100/200, 0 ante

Before the end of the last level, Dan Smith opened the action with a raise to 300 after play folded to him in the cutoff seat. The player on the button called, and everyone else folded.

The flop came down {10-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{5-Clubs}, and Smith led for 450. His opponent called, and the turn was the {9-Clubs}. Both players checked.

The {J-Hearts} completed the board on the river, and Smith fired 1,200. His opponent folded, and Smith won the pot.

Welcome to the Party Action Dan

Dan Harrington
Dan Harrington

You don't see Dan Harrington on the tournament circuit too much these days, but the 1995 World Series of Poker Main Event champ always makes it out for the Main Event. We recently spotted Harrington, a former attorney and the 1971 Massachusetts State Chess Champion, in the field over at Table 379.

Since making back-to-back final tables in the 2003 and 2004 WSOP Main Events, where he finished third and fourth respectively, "Action Dan" has been a favorite among poker fans. He's also gained quite a bit of notoriety through his acclaimed Harrington on Hold'em series of instructional poker books.

Harrington is one of four past Main Event champs in today's field alongside Doyle Brunson (1976 & 1977), Scotty Nguyen (1998) and Greg Raymer (2004).

Steven Burkholder the Boat Holder

Level 2 : 100/200, 0 ante

With a flop of {5-Spades}{j-Spades}{10-Diamonds} already spread across the felt, Steven Burkholder checked from the small blind, moving the action over to an opponent in the cutoff.

The other player tossed out a bet of 1,500 and watched as Burkholder slowly cut out a raise to 4,500. When the opponent flatted in position, the turn card came {5-Hearts}.

Burkholder then led out for an 8,000 wager, and his opponent hemmed and hawed a bit before loudly announcing a call. The dealer burned and turned on fifth street, delivering a blank in the {3-Clubs}.

That's when Burkholder pushed a big stack of chips forward, and before the dealer could even count them down the other player grabbed his own stack and heaped it into the middle. A snap-call by Burkholder turned the cards face up.

Showdown:

Burkholder: {J-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}
Opponent: {10-Hearts}{10-Spades}

The busted player was crestfallen when he saw the bad news, and he made his displeasure known with a few obscenities muttered under his breath. Regaining his composure, the coolered player offered Burkholder a sincere "nice hand sir," before making his way from the tournament floor in a daze of devastation.

Easy Come, Easy Go for Fleischer

Level 2 : 100/200, 0 ante

Within 22 minutes of this tournament Terry Fleischer had eliminated Mehrdad Danialifar and doubled his stack. It was the dream start, but things have quickly went south for Fleischer as he lost all those chips and then some to poker pro Micah Raskin.

We didn't see the hand when it happened, but Raskin was kind enough to fill us in on some details. According to him, Fleischer opened with a raise holding the {a-Hearts}{3-Hearts} and Raskin three-bet holding {a-}{a-}. Fleischer flatted and the flop came all low cards with two hearts. Fleischer led out with his flush draw and Raskin raised. Fleischer then jammed and Raskin, who had a decent stack behind, tanked before calling off. The turn and river both blanked and Raskin's pocket rockets held to give him the hefty pot while Fleischer's dream start turned into a nightmare as he is now down to 13,000.
