WSOP Legend: Doyle Brunson's Final Bracelet, 15 Years Later

Level 31 : 14,000/28,000, 3,500 ante
WSOP Legend Doyle Brunson
WSOP Legend Doyle Brunson

At the beginning of the 2005 WSOP, Doyle Brunson remained the co-king of the all-time bracelet count, tied along with Johnny Chan at nine. However, as the series drew toward its close in late June, that was no longer the case — Chan had overtaken him by winning No. 10 to stand atop the mountain alone.

Brunson was already phasing out his tournament play, having cashed precisely zero times that summer and just three times in the previous two combined, although one had resulted in a bracelet victory.

When it came time for Event #31: $5,000 No-Limit Hold'em 6-Handed, Brunson dusted off his tournament chops and made a run.

Liebert Falls to Basile

Level 31 : 14,000/28,000, 3,500 ante
Kathy Liebert
Kathy Liebert

Christopher "basile28" Basile raised from the cutoff and then called Kathy "Luckygal" Liebert's 97,076 three-bet jam from the small blind.

Kathy "Luckygal" Liebert: {a-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}
Christopher "basile28" Basile: {q-Clubs}{j-Clubs}

The {8-Spades}{9-Hearts}{j-Spades} flop hit both players but Liebert was still behind and the {6-Hearts} turn was no help. Liebert needed to spike an ace or eight on the river to stay alive but it came the {4-Clubs}and ended her tournament.

Liebert Loses Million Chip Pot to Gross

Level 30 : 12,000/24,000, 3,000 ante
Steve Gross

A series of preflop raises saw Kathy "Luckygal" Liebert move all in on the button and Steve "Gbrorooo" Gross called off his stack from the small blind.

Steve "Gbrorooo" Gross: {q-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}
Kathy "Luckygal" Liebert: {a-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}

Gross was ahead with his pocket queens and the {k-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{6-Spades}{5-Hearts} runout secured him one of the largest pots of the tournament.

Marder Picking Players Apart

Michael Marder

"DKALLIN2WYN" raised all in for 129,186 from the cutoff and Christopher "basile28" Basile called on the button only to fold after Michael "ParxBigStax" Marder came over the top for 1,448,441 from the small blind.

"DKALLIN2WYN": {j-Spades}{10-Diamonds}
Michael "ParxBigStax" Marder: {a-Hearts}{k-Spades}

Mader held the better hand and nothing changed after the {5-Spades}{4-Hearts}{7-Spades} flop appeared. The {9-Hearts} did give "DKALLIN2WYN" some hope adding a gutshot straight draw but the {3-Spades} river ended their tournament.
