Messere Gets the Double Up to Stay Alive

Level 29 : Blinds 4,000/8,000, 0 ante
Owen Messere
Owen Messere

Kane Kalas raised on the button to 19,500 and Owen Messere three-bet to 64,000. Kalas then four-bet shoved all-in, covering Messere, who quickly called.

Owen Messere: A8 All in
Kane Kalas: AK

Kalas was in good shape to end the match and advance to the next round. That was until the dealer put out the flop of 285, putting Messere in the lead.

Kalas would need a king or running hearts to knock out his opponent, but the J turn and 9 river offered no help. Messere secured the double up and the lead in the match.

After being left short, Michael Steele was all in and at risk for his tournament life.

In a limped pot to the 987 flop, Patrick Kennedy jammed, and Steele committed his last 51,000.

Patrick Kennedy: 8x8x

In quick succession, Kennedy flopped another set of eights but fell behind when Kennedy completed his straight on the 6 turn. The Q river ensured Steele's double and the match continued.

Shortly after, Steele jammed from the button and Kennedy snap-called.

Patrick Kennedy opened to 12,000 on the button and Michael Steele called.

Steele checked to Kennedy on the A78 flop and he continued for 8,000. Kennedy then check-raised to 28,000 and, undeterred, Kennedy announced another raise to 72,000. Steele called.

The 3 fell on the turn and Steele checked to Kennedy, who fired 160,000 into the middle. Steele announced he was all in and Kennedy snap-called all in for 481,000 total.

Steele turned over 77 for a set of sevens, but Kennedy showed him the bad news as he turned over 88 for a higher flopped set.

“Brutal cooler,” Kennedy said as he collected the pot.
