Michael Dwyer and Tyler Montoya were heads-up in a pot that saw the flop of 9♣6♦5♦ hit the felt. Within seconds, the two players had all of their chips in the middle with Dwyer being the player at risk for around 28,000.
Michael Dwyer: J♣J♦
Tyler Montoya: 8♣7♦
Montoya flopped a straight against the overpair of Dwyer who was left drawing slim. The A♠ and 4♥ runout left Montoya with the nuts as Dwyer departed and wished the table good luck.
Montoya is one of the few millionaires to be crowned at the 2025 WSOP in Las Vegas thus far, but not because of winning a tournament. Montoya's million-dollar payday came in the form of drawing one of the largest bounties in Event #1. Montoya mentioned that he would increase his summer schedule and added this event as one of the must-plays.
Picking up the action on the turn with the board reading 10♠9♣3♣9♥, Chance Kornuth bet 10,000 into a pot of around 15,000. Terry Fleischer check-raised to 30,000 and Kornuth played with his chips before shoving all in for around 55,000. Fleischer snapped him off and the cards were on their backs.
Chance Kornuth: K♦10♦
Terry Fleischer: K♠9♠
Kornuth was in a heap of trouble with two pair against the trip nines of Fleischer. The river was the A♠ and Kornuth exited the tournament area while Fleischer stacked another pot.
"You've knocked out 15% of the field already," Erik Seidel chimed in from the other side of the table.
Ihar Soika raised to 800 from the hijack. Michel Molenaar in the cutoff called and Alan Goasdoue defended from the big blind.
The dealer fanned a flop of Q♠A♠4♣ and Soika continued for 900. Molenaar folded, but Goasdoue didn't back down and called.
After Goasdoue checked the 8♦ turn, Soika fired a second barrel of 4,700. Goasdoue went into the tank and called, then led out for 2,200 on the 8♥ river.
Soika eventually made the call with A♦K♦ and won against Goasdoue's A♣6♠.
The action was picked up on the turn with an all-in, a call, and 120,000 chips in the middle. This put Jianwei Lin at risk against Johnny Steven. The board read J♠8♦5♠9♦
Jianwei Lin: Q♥10♥
Johnny Steven: Q♦10♦
Steven, who was freerolling his flush draw against Lin, found the J♦ on the river for the straight-flush, the knockout, and 120,000 chips.
Michel Molenaar raised from under the gun to 600, and was called by Chaunshu Chen in the cutoff. Yuan Lei re-raised on the button to 2,000, and Molenaar made it 6,000 to go. Chen folded, but Lei called.
The flop came 10♠6♥3♠, Molenaar bet 3,500, Lei raised to 8,000, Molenaar re-raised to 13,000, and Lei called.
On the 7♣ turn, Molenaar went all-in for 17,600 and was called by Lei.
Michel Molenaar: K♦K♣
Yuan Lei: A♣Q♣
No ace from space for Lei on the river, and Molenaar found the double-up.
On the very first hand, Fabian Gumz and Tsubasa Kamei were battling heads-up in the blinds. The board read 8♥5♣2♠J♥ and Gumz led out with a bet of 10,000 into a pot of around nearly that much. Kamei called from the big blind and the 9♦ completed the board.
Gumz slid his entire stack of around 35,000 into the middle and Kamei sank into his chair. After deliberating for a couple of minutes, Kamei also put his stack in the middle to call. Gumz flipped over Q♥7♦ for complete air while Kamei showed 10♥10♦ as the lone pair to scoop the pot.
"As good of a start as you can get," another tablemate said.
