2025 World Series of Poker
2024's Tag Team Champions, Jason James and Jimmy Setna, have fallen at the first hurdle in their title defence. The two were unsuccessful in making it past Day 1, falling after playing just two levels.
No matter what, a new Champion of the current format will be crowned in two days' time, as 2023 winners Michael Savakinas and Satoshi Tanaka headed home during Level 6, 2021 winner Mike Ruter busted early in the day, and 2022 victors Patrick Leonard and Espen Jørstad's partnership did not return.

A total of nine Team Zhangs have entered the tag team, seven of which are currently still with chips in play. That being said, there is one that is certainly a cut above the rest.
With five WSOP bracelets between them, and over an incredible $8,000,000 in live earnings, Yang Zhang and Xixiang Luo are certainly a force to be reckoned with. The latter, who is currently playing, is sitting with more than two starting stacks in front of him, which him and his partner will certainly be putting to good use down the line.
Zhang's last bracelet came in the 2018 WSOP Europe, and is yet to find another, having final tabled just once, last year, since that series. He has cashed five times already here in 2025, but will be hoping to replicate the success of his partner, who is fresh off the back of a bracelet win in Event #: $1,500 Pot Limit Omaha Double Board Bomb Pot - 8-Handed.

Despite many teams here in the tag team being comprised of at least one reg, there are plenty of star-studded teams who have turned out today, some of whom have already said goodbye.
Japanese powerhouses Masato Yokosawa and Hiroki Nawa left during just Level 5, with Nawa the only one still looking for his first cash of the Series, after vlogger Yokosawa came fifth in the $25,000 High Roller.
Three main event winners have also departed: 1983 Champion Tom McEvoy teamed himself up with Keith Burt, but the pair were unable to make it past Level 3. Possibly the most feared pairing in the whole competition has also departed early on, as 2024 Champion Jonathan Tamayo, along with 2013 Winner Ryan Riess, were certainly looking for blood, however they were unable to find any as they lasted not even 45 minutes before hitting the rail.

Plenty of pairings are finding the exit door after their chip count has been reduced to 0. Many husband-and-wife pairings have been sent home together, including PokerNews' own Rachel Kay Winter and husband Brian, as well as Kaitlyn Mitchell and husband Brandon, who is fresh off of a fifth place finish in Event #14: $25,000 No Limit Hold'em/Pot Limit Omaha - High Roller Eight-Handed.
Also, English duo Tom Hall and Dan Neal have hit the rail, alongside Swiss-German pair Andreas Frohli and Mathias Bayer.

Two up-and-coming content creators, in Alexandra Loveless and Abby Merk, have made an all-ladies team to take on the tag team event. The duo, currently sitting slightly above starting stack, are certainly dressed for the occasion, as Merk has donned a Yoshi outfit, with her partner playing as Princess Daisy.
Combined, the two have over 100,000 followers on Instagram, who will be watching their every move today as the two both eye their first-ever WSOP final table, as well as becoming the first-ever female-only team to take down a tag team bracelet. Merk is currently almost halfway to completing her $10,000 summer challenge, and given "how hard it is" to make that money from smaller buy-in events, she'll definitely be hoping to up the number with a deep run.
Currently, the action has been all Loveless, as she has got the two well above starting stack, in preparation for Merk to take over.
