THE FIFTY-- The board reads . There is 14,000 in the pot and your opponent has set you all in for your remaining 12,000 or so. And you have a full house.
"There are only two hands I'm afraid of," said Scott Wilson as he folded the face up to the gasps of some of the surrounding spectators and floor-people. His opponent quietly dragged the pot without showing his hand.
THE SPORTSMAN -- Philip Hilm, whose chips had been drifting gently downwards so far today, just doubled up with AJ, hitting two pair by the turn.
Meanwhile Terry Cook has been on the aggressive after moving into John McCririck's old seat. Just now he took a pot off Dario Minieri, who had raised to 800 under the gun and bet out 1,700 on a flop, only to find Cook raising to 4,500. Minieri thought about it for a while, and let it go, saying "Show the bluff..." and with no bluff forthcoming, "No good, pocket Queens."
Then I spotted his tidy stacks over the line, all of it (38k roughly) preflop, with only 5k so far in the pot. His potential caller Cristiano Blanco looked quizzically at the bet, before deciding he wasn't up for putting the lot on the line and passing. That table has plenty of chips on it, with Francisco Lopez stacking high too, and no doubt plenty of action still to come before the dinner break.
And here is what a more sedate table looks like:
Hoyt Corkins -- 18,200
Zimnan Ziyard -- 24,300
Fabrice Soulier -- 31,900
Josh Gould -- 10,025
Roman Yitzhaki -- 19,000
Matthew Gilbert -- 11,325
John Ridge -- 19,800
Jan Heitmann -- 32,000
Feklisov -- 28,000
The cool Soulier showed up late and proceeded to steadily climb in chips, while there has yet to be a player eliminated from this table.
In case you were wondering who busted out on Day 1A, here's a quick list of noteworthy eliminations from all three casinos (Empire, The Fifty, and the Sportsman):
Nenad Medic, Andy Bloch, David Williams, Alex Kim, John McCririck, Todd Brunson, Freddy Deeb, Noel Furlong, John Juanda, William Thorson, and Thomas Bihl
Ted Forrest, who has been hovering around the 30k mark for most of the day, is still doing just that with a very manageable 29,500.
However, he just dropped below the 30k mark for the first time in a while after running into neighbour Jonathan Friedberg. The board was and as soon as Ted saw Jonathan reaching for chips, which was ultimately 3.5k, he got out of the way faster than a cheetah on a missile.
Sarah Taylor's stack is around 62,000. She's been having an erratic day. Taylor has plenty of bullets and has not been shy to use them. That's why her stack has been fluctuating over the past few hours.
Downstairs in the poker room, there are two tournament tables running along with a couple of cash game tables in the corner. There are about twenty or thirty spectators on the rail and someone of them have been asking me for chip counts for players at the cash game table. They assume that those players are in the WSOPE.
Of course the other most popular question I have been getting is... "Where's Daniel Negreanu playing?"
For all you fanatical Negreanu-heads out there, he's playing on Day 1B. I assume he's off on the golf course today working on his short game.
