Romanello Recalls Past Success in Prague by Topping Day 1b of WSOP Europe Main Event

Level 10 : Blinds 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Roberto Romanello
Roberto Romanello

After a massive Day 1a with 803 entrants, Day 1b of the €5,300 WSOPE Main Event didn't disappoint either with 653 entries recorded among the ten 60-minute levels played this Saturday. Overall, this brings the total to 1,456 so far before this Sunday's Day 1c and the end of late registration on Day 2.

Out all these players, Roberto Romanello knows better than most what it feels like to win on the main stage at the Hilton Prague, having taken down EPT Prague back in 2010. Time flies, but Romanello remains and he even bagged the biggest stack among the 269 remaining players with 451,000 chips.

I didn’t play big all-ins, but I’ve been aggressive at the feature table, so players saw my hands and it paid off later,” he said to explain how he built his stack. “A lot of memories of the room came to mind today. I love Prague, I feel good, but I’m not getting too excited. There’s still a long way to go.”

With Romanello, Biao Ding (431,500) is the only player above the 400,000-chip mark while Gabriele Guerrini is third in chips with (362,500).

Martin Kabrhel was heard all around the room all day and managed to bag a big stack of 322,000; this feat was also achieved by players like Tom Middleton (304,500), Felipe Ketzer (262,500), and Jonathan Little (258,000).

Coming to Prague, Shiina Okamoto had high expectations for the €1,000 WSOPE Ladies Event, which started at the same time as Day 1b. Out of 197 entries, 30 players made the money and qualified for Day 2, but the back-to-back WSOP Ladies Event champion was eliminated well before the bubble.

She immediately jumped into the Main Event and successfully bagged 250,000 after spending the end of the day at one of the outer feature tables. The 2024 EPT Prague champion, Pedro Marques, sits just behind with 240,000.

Today was also a day for multiple bracelet winners, with Josh Arieh (200,000), David “ODB” Baker (191,000), Georgios Sotiropoulos (190,500), Blaz Zerjav (187,000) who six-bet jammed earlier in the day, Tobias Peters (176,500), Jesse Lonis (171,500) and Benny Glaser (163,000), all qualifying for Monday’s Day 2 through Day 1b.

Only Shaun Deeb might have mixed feelings after today. On one hand, he bagged 105,000 in the Main Event, but on the other, he finished runner-up for the second time this week after Gilles Silbernagel denied him a ninth WSOP win in the €565 Colossus. The Frenchman hit quads in the final hand to win his first WSOP bracelet and the top prize of €165,000.

Behind players like Ole Schemion (187,500) and PokerNews' Brad Whitehouse
(183,500), the defending champion Daniel Pidun (138,500) also made it to Day 2, along with the 2018 WSOPE champion Jack Sinclair (59,000) and the 2021 runner-up Johan Guilbert (130,000) who seemed to enjoy his time at the table.

Lower down in the counts, Enrico Camosci finished with 93,000, while the 2019 WSOP Main Event champion Hossein Ensan ended the day with only half of his starting stack (34,000).

The third and final starting flight, Day 1c, begins this Sunday, April 5, at noon local time. Just like in 1a and 1b, players will start with 60,000 chips and try to grow their stacks through ten 60-minute levels.

Blinds begin at 100/200 with a 200 big blind ante, and two re-entries per flight are allowed. But even with this rule, eliminations won’t be final, as late registration remains open for the first two levels of Day 2.

PokerNews’ Whitehouse Busts WSOP 10th-Place Finisher

Brad Whitehouse

Diogo Coelho raised to 3,000 from the hijack and was called by PokerNews’ Brad Whitehouse in the cutoff and by Mateusz Wozniak on the button.

The dealer fanned a flop of 569 and Coelho checked. Whitehouse bet 8,000, Wozniak called but Coelho shoved all-in for 51,500. Whitehouse moved all-in as well with the starting stack and Wozniak folded.

Brad Whitehouse: 99

Coelho had a flush draw and straight draw but Whitehouse flopped a set and even hit a full house with the 5A runout to send Coelho to the rail.

Zerjav Six-Bet Jams

Blaz Zerjav

Daniel Moran opened to 2,200 from middle position before Dmytro Smyrnov made it 6,200 from the button. Blaz Zerjav reraised to 16,000 in the small blind, forcing out Moran. Smyrnov then five-bet to 31,000, sending Zerjav into the tank.

Zerjav had approximately another 37,000 behind, and after using three-time banks, he jammed for around 53,000 total. Smyrnov didn't snap-call, and returned his cards to the dealer instead, much to the surprise of the table.

Deeb Among the Chip Leaders

Level 6 : Blinds 400/800, 800 ante
Shaun Deeb
Shaun Deeb

Shaun Deeb has brushed off his earlier heads-up defeat in the COLOSSUS and taken his seat in the WSOP Europe Main Event.

Just like in every tournament he’s entered here in Prague, Deeb is already building a stack. He has turned the 60,000 starting stack into 260,000 heading into the dinner break.

Deeb previously finished third in the 2022 WSOP Europe Main Event, and looks to be off to another strong start in the series showpiece.

Kings Cracked in Five-Bet Pot

Level 5 : Blinds 300/600, 600 ante
Mateusz Kaniowski

Sven Andersson raised from under the gun before Vasyl Pidhrushnyi made it 3,500 from early position. Enrico Campanile called from the hijack before Mateusz Kaniowski, squeezed to 11,100 from the small blind. Andersson folded, and then Pidhrushnyi five-bet to 20,000. Only Kaniowski called.

Kaniowski check-called for 10,000 on the 662 flop, and snap-called for his last 26,000 after Pidhrushnyi jammed as the bigger stack.

Shaun Deeb Denied By Quads Again in Heads-Up for WSOP Bracelet

Level 4 : Blinds 300/500, 500 ante

Shaun Deeb came agonizingly close to winning his ninth World Series of Poker bracelet for the second time at the 2026 World Series of Poker Europe, but once again saw his bid denied.

For the second time in less than a week, the final hand of heads-up ended with his opponent making quads, as France's Gilles Silbernagel captured the €565 COLOSSUS title for €165,000 at King’s Casino inside Hilton Prague.

Silbernagel defeated Deeb in the final duel to secure the biggest win of his career since 2018, denying the two-time WSOP Player of the Year yet another shot at history. Deeb had previously fallen short in the €3,300 PLO Mixed, where he also lost the final hand of heads-up to quads and collected €81,784.

Had Deeb closed it out, he would have become the fastest player to reach nine bracelets, a record currently held by Phil Ivey.

WSOP Europe Main Event Entry Record to Break on Day 1b

WSOP Europe poker room
WSOP Europe poker room

How is success measured in poker? For players, it’s money won, trophies collected, and the respect of their peers. For operators like the World Series of Poker, it’s measured by how many players fill the seats, and the 2026 WSOP Europe at King’s Casino in Hilton Prague has had no shortage of traffic.

Early events across the schedule have already produced strong numbers. The €1,100 The Opener - NLHE Mystery Bounty drew 2,195 entries, while the €3,300 PLO Mixed attracted a respectable 181 runners. The €565 COLOSSUS piled up 2,662 entries, alongside 1,120 in the €565 PLOSSUS Bounty PLO.

But the figure everyone is watching is the total for the 2026 WSOP Europe Main Event, which gets its Day 1b flight underway at noon local time. The series’ marquee tournament kicked off on Friday with 803 entries, just 14 shy of the record mark of 817 set in 2023. That milestone is expected to fall as soon as cards go in the air today, with attention then turning to whether the €10 million guarantee will be reached.

From Day 1a, 336 players successfully navigated the opening hurdle, led by Aliaksei Boika, who bagged the overnight chip lead with 424,500. While no tournament is won on Day 1, several big names have already positioned themselves well. Former WSOP Europe Main Event champions Annette Obrestad (189,000), Max Neugebauer (123,000), and Simone Andrian (82,000) all advanced with workable stacks.

Rising talents including Frank Cucchiara (348,000), Nicholas Seward (297,500), and Zdenek Zizka (195,000) also made strong starts, while seasoned pros such as Nacho Barbero (289,500), Patrick Leonard (247,500), and online poker star Niklas Astedt (237,000) remain firmly in the hunt.

Those players have already cleared the first stage and secured their place in Day 2. Now, the focus shifts to those returning after falling short on Day 1a, along with a fresh wave of hopefuls looking to join them.
