Throwback Thursday: Jungleman Joins the Durrrr Challenge
Is the "Durrrr Challenge" back on?
The poker world was abuzz back in 2009 when Tom "Durrrr" Dwan first publicly announced his "Durrrr Challenge." The original statement laid out the rules of the Challenge: "I'm making this heads-up challenge to the world. Anyone can accept. Four tables, minimum of $200/$400, and I'll put up $1.5 million to their $500,000. We play 50,000 hands minimum and if they end up a dollar after rake they keep the side money or whatever. So basically, if you and I played and you won a dollar, you would get my $1.5 million and if I won a dollar I would win your $500,000. So I'm giving a million dollars free if anyone thinks they can do it."
Essentially, Dwan offered the high stakes online poker community an opportunity to make 3:1 on their bet if they were able to win money off of Dwan over the course of 50,000 hands.
Patrik Antonius was the first to accept the challenge but quit after being down over $2 million in just under 40,000 hands.
Dan "Jungleman12" Cates was the next one to take Dwan up on the challenge. Their challenge began in August 2010 and still hasn't finished! However, Cates recently admitted Dwan has paid him over $700,000 in penalties. Almost eight years after the challenge started, the two still need to play more than 30,000 of the 50,000 hands required of the challenge. Currently, Cates is up $1,251,059.
