Jonathan Little's Weekly Poker Hand: Play a Combo Draw Aggressively or Passively?

Poker pro and coach Jonathan Little has been producing a wide variety of strategy content for poker players for some time, including authoring multiple books and sharing videos and articles on his website and elsewhere, much of which is free to players of all levels seeking to improve their games.

Little started his popular "Weekly Poker Hand" series on YouTube several years ago, and recently he decided to switch up the format to begin featuring footage from live small- and medium-stakes cash games.

In the episode shown below, Little returns to Stones Gambling Hall in California in order to analyze another hand.

Normally a $5/$10 no-limit hold'em cash game with a straddle, in this case the eight players chose to play a "bomb pot" meaning each of them put in $50 before the flop, creating a $400 pot.

All eight were in, then, when the flop came 68K, giving multiple players straight draws and one of them (Daniel) a flush draw, too, with 107. Meanwhile another player (Eli) flopped bottom two pair with 86, and after Daniel led with a bet of $150, Eli raised to $350 clear the field.

Action returned to Daniel who had to decide whether just to call the raise or reraise with his combo draw. Should he play passively or aggressively here? That's the issue Little focuses upon in his analysis.

Some of the concepts discussed in the hand analysis include:

  • hand values (and how they change when playing a "bomb pot")
  • multi-way strategy
  • ranges and range reading
  • fold equity
  • pot odds
